Henry I (The English Monarchs Series)
Henry I, son of William the Conqueror, ruled from 1100 to 1135, a time of fundamental change in the Anglo-Norman world. This long-awaited biography, written by one of the most distinguished medievalists of his generation, offers a major reassessment of Henry’s character and reign. Challenging the dark and dated portrait of the king as brutal, greedy, and repressive, it argues instead that Henry’s rule was based on reason and order.

C. Warren Hollister points out that Henry laid the foundations for judicial and financial institutions usually attributed to his grandson, Henry II. Royal government was centralized and systematized, leading to firm, stable, and peaceful rule for his subjects in both England and Normandy. By mid-reign Henry I was the most powerful king in Western Europe, and with astute diplomacy, an intelligence network, and strategic marriages of his children (legitimate and illegitimate), he was able to undermine the various coalitions mounted against him. Henry strove throughout his reign to solidify the Anglo-Norman dynasty, and his marriage linked the Normans to the Old English line.

Hollister vividly describes Henry’s life and reign, places them against the political background of the time, and provides analytical studies of the king and his magnates, the royal administration, and relations between king and church. The resulting volume is one that will be welcomed by students and general readers alike.

American Architecture: A History
More than fifteen years after the success of the first edition, this sweeping introduction to the history of architecture in the United States is now a fully revised guide to the major developments that shaped the environment from the first Americans to the present, from the everyday vernacular to the high style of aspiration. Eleven chronologically organized chapters chart the social, cultural, and political forces that shaped the growth and development of American towns, cities, and suburbs, while providing full description, analysis, and interpretation of buildings and their architects.

The second edition features an entirely new chapter detailing the green architecture movement and architectural trends in the 21st century. Further updates include an expanded section on Native American architecture and contemporary design by Native American architects, new discussions on architectural education and training, more examples of women architects and designers, and a thoroughly expanded glossary to help today's readers. The art program is expanded, including 640 black and white images and 62 new color images. Accessible and engaging, American Architecture continues to set the standard as a guide, study, and reference for those seeking to better understand the rich history of architecture in the United States.

Foundation Repair Science - What to Have Done ...and Why
There are nine brief chapters, each dealing with a specific aspect of foundation repair. There are many photographs and sidebars to help you understand the ideas. To make things faster, you probably don t have to read chapters that don t apply to you.

For example, if you have a foundation that is settling, you ll need to read chapters 1, 2, 3 and 9 and won t have to read chapters 4 - 8. If your foundation walls are bowing, leaning, or pushing-in, you only need to read chapters 7 - 9. And, if you have slab settlement, problems above your crawl space, or are doing new construction, you can read the chapter specific to those problems.

David, Amanda and I teamed up to write this book, and we include the voices of many of us here at Foundation Supportworks. So, yes, we have an interest in its success. But since a foundation repair can be a significant project, you ll need more information than can be provided in a brochure, and the issue deserves more attention than that. When confronted with having a repair project done, most people would want to know what a foremost expert in the field would do to their own home.

It is our intention to give you all the facts and ask all the questions you should be asking when undertaking a foundation repair project. We ll present what is available from our company and others, explore the advantages and disadvantages, and discuss why they are important. We ll look at fixing settling foundations, floor slabs, support columns in crawl spaces, new construction, and bowing or pushed-in foundation walls.

We understand that you re reading this because you are probably shopping for a foundation repair contractor and strategy. While we are stakeholders in a foundation repair company, you are the owner of your home and are the one to make the decision. As with any choice in products and contractors, some are not what they promise, and it may be what you don t know that creates a problem for you if you purchase it. This book is full disclosure of the industry for your consideration.

We hope you get value from this information no matter what you decide to do. We respect that you are the judge.

Sharing Our Stories of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence (Tribal Legal Studies)
A general introduction to the social and legal issues involved in acts of violence against Native women, this book's contributors are lawyers, social workers, social scientists, writers, poets, and victims. In the U.S. Native women are more likely than women from any other group to suffer violence, from rape and battery to more subtle forms of abuse, and Sharing Our Stories of Survival explores the causes and consequences of such behavior. The stories and case-studies presented here are often painful and raw, and the statistics are overwhelmingly grim; but a countervailing theme also runs through this extremely informative volume: Many of the women who appear in these pages are survivors, often strengthened by their travails, and the violence examined here is human violence, meaning that it can be changed, if only with much effort and education. The first step is to lay out the truth for all to see, and that is the purpose accomplished by this book.

China’s Last Jesuit: Charles J. McCarthy and the End of the Mission in Catholic Shanghai (Christianity in Modern China)

This pivot chronicles the life of Charles McCarthy, a San Francisco native and Jesuit missionary to China, and tells the unique and compelling story of a young man who experienced confinement under the Japanese occupation, followed shortly by imprisonment by the Chinese Communists in the 1950’s. Through a study of McCarthy’s unique epistolary exchanges, it considers the intellectual life of a Catholic missionary, his ongoing fight for equal citizenship rights, illustrating how American Catholic missionaries in Maoist-era Shanghai navigated the social tensions of a nation-state in turbulent transition. This narrative explores Jesuit strategies of resistance and persistence in an era of oppression, and ideological and religious conflict as those sent to fill the missionary spots left by European men lost in the World Wars were caught up in China’s mid-century political upheavals.
