New Releases by Babcock John

Account book kept by proprietor John Babcock for the Hartford-New Haven Old Stage Company. The company was incorporated in May 1833 by James Brewster, John Babcock, John S. Mitchell, and others. The book, beginning in 1838, documents the expenses, ranging from white washing the office to purchasing horses and paying tolls. Income came from the rental of carriages and delivering mail. Other principals at this time include Elnathan Atwater, Henry Rose (for the estate of James Rose), and John Swathel. Contains an appraisal of the stage horses. Indications are that by December 1840 John Babcock has died and the account book is taken up by another person, possibly E.P. Camp. A final settlement of the company is dated March 1841. The account book appears to have remained in E.P. Camp's possession, and in 1863 there is an inventory of his estate.
