Inner Sense

release date: Oct 07, 2025
Inner Sense
“A fascinating look at the power of the body to influence our mind—and even affect how we see the world.”—Janice Kaplan, New York Times bestselling author of The Gratitude Diaries and What Your Body Knows About Happiness Discover your elusive “sixth sense”—your brain’s ability to perceive and interpret bodily sensations like hunger and thirst—and how to rewire your mind-body connection for optimal health. Are you able to recognize your own heartbeat? What about thirst? In Inner Sense, science communicator Caroline Williams explains that some people are so insensitive to internal cues that they struggle to recognize basic needs like hunger or fatigue. While others only notice their body’s signals when they become overwhelming. This disconnect between the brain’s predictions and the body’s sensations can lead to mental and physical health challenges, from chronic fatigue, to anxiety, to eating disorders. If this sounds like you—don’t worry. It’s not too late to tap into your interoceptive awareness. In this practical, science-backed book, you will learn … - How to harness one of the most important functions of your body: its sixth sense, known to scientists as interoception. - How the mind-body connection is a two-way street, with the brain and body in a constant flow of communication. - How to perceive and interpret physical processes like heartbeat and breath. - How to pick up on and respond to physical cues like hunger and thirst. - How to identify emotions that express themselves physically such as panic or rage. - How pain works in your body and in your brain. - How internal sensations influence your thoughts and actions—and how to learn and harness interoceptive awareness. Inner Sense delves into the fascinating field of interoception, speaking with doctors, scientists, and researchers about how our internal sensations influence our thoughts and actions—and how we can harness interoceptive awareness to improve health, relationships, and society as a whole. Williams explores cutting-edge interventions like mindfulness, biofeedback, targeted exercise, and even psychedelic therapy, which hold the potential to help us regulate emotions, reduce stress, and live better lives.

Move

Move
*Shortlisted for Sunday Times Book of the Year* *A Greater Good Science Center Best Book of 2022* An eye-opening journey into the power of human movement and how we can harness it to optimize our brain health, boost our mood and improve every aspect our lives For our earliest ancestors who hunted and gathered, movement meant survival. Our brains evolved to reward physical activity. Moving, thinking and feeling have always been inextricably linked. Yet what happens when we stop moving? Today, on average, we spend around 70% of our lives sitting or lying completely still. Our sedentary lifestyle—desk jobs, long commutes and lots of screen time—is not only bad for our bodies. It can also result in anxiety, depression and a lower overall IQ. But there’s good news. Even the simplest movements can reactivate our bodies and open up a hotline to our minds, improving our overall well-being and longevity. And we don’t have to spend countless hours in the gym. In fact, exercise as we understand it misses the point. Veteran science journalist Caroline Williams explores the cutting-edge research behind brain health and physical activity, interviewing scientists from around the world to completely reframe our relationship to movement. Along the way she reveals easy tricks that we could all use to improve our memory, maximize our creativity, strengthen our emotional literacy and more. A welcome counterpoint to the current mindfulness craze, Move offers a more stimulating and productive way of freeing our caged minds to live our best life.

My Plastic Brain

release date: Jan 01, 2018
My Plastic Brain
Using herself as a guinea pig, a science journalist explores "neuroplasticity" to find out whether she can make meaningful, lasting changes to the way her brain works. In books like THE HAPPINESS PROJECT, THE NO-SPEND YEAR, and THE YEAR OF YES, individuals have tried a specific experience and then reported on it, sharing the takeaway for the rest of us. In MY PLASTIC BRAIN, Caroline Williams spends a year exploring "neuroplasticity"--the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections--to find out whether she can make meaningful, lasting changes to the way her brain works. A science journalist with access to cutting edge experts and facilities, she volunteers herself as a test subject, challenging researchers to make real changes to the function and performance of her brain. She seeks to improve on everyday weaknesses such as her limited attention span and tendency to worry too much. She then branches out into more mysterious areas such as creativity and the perception of time. From Boston to Oxford, England, and Philadelphia to Freiburg, Germany, Williams travels to labs or virtually meets with scientists and tries their techniques of mindfulness meditation, magnetic brain stimulation, sustained focus exercises, stress response retraining, and more. She shares her intimate journey with readers to discover what neuroscience can really do for us.

Override

release date: Jan 03, 2017
Override
Can you really rewire an adult brain? In theory the answer is 'yes', but there's a problem- no one seems to know exactly how to do it. In Override, Caroline Williams sets off on a mission to find out. Delving into the latest studies on brain plasticity, which indicate that brain games don't actually do much to make you smarter, she tries to square that finding with the reality of brain plasticity - that the brain adapts physically as we learn something new. Visiting top neuroscientists in their labs, she volunteers herself as a guinea pig in neuroscience studies, challenging researchers to make real changes to her - functioning, but imperfect - brain. She seeks to improve on her own weaknesses, such as a limited attention span and a tendency to worry too much, and then branches out into more mysterious areas such as intelligence, creativity, and the perception of time. Trying everything from high-tech brain stimulation to meditation, adding bolt-on senses and retraining her stress response, Overrideis a very intimate, fascinating journey into discovering what neuroscience can really do for us - and, crucially, whether it's worth all the bother. 'A delightful book. Smart, spirited, personal, and stocked with well-researched psychological and neural facts, woven together in an original tapestry.' - Marc Lewis, award-winning author of The Biology of Desire'If your mind has a mind of its own, this is the book that will teach you how to discipline it and stop it wandering off. Caroline Williams has written an entertaining, smart self-help book for people who hate self-help books. Her great skill is in navigating the complexity of neuroscience to produce a practical, no-nonsense guide to brain-training that is also a page-turner.' - Gaia Vince, award-winning author of Adventures in the Anthropocene

Lives in Letters

release date: Apr 27, 2016
Lives in Letters
The eight women in this book, five Wesselhoeft sisters and three daughters, are brought to life through letters: those inherited and those (1891-l941) discovered in a goat's shed in a Berlin suburb. The sisters, all born in the 1870's in Cambridge, Massachusetts, were shaped by education, talent, travel, and the suffrage movement. They embodied "the New Woman" of the early Twentieth Century. They died in California in the 1960's, to which they had come by various paths. Ferdie by Communism; Gertrude, by marriage, which led to a career in film; Mary, by painting; Amy, by the aftermath of World Wars in Europe, and Eleanor, as an actress. In the next generation, the daughters from 1925 onwards, discovered and explored the wider world: Eleanor Hoffmann in Morocco, Trudy Bliss in England and Eleanor von Erdberg in the far East. In these stories, expectations sometimes clashed with the realities as experienced, but each woman determined the course of her own life.

It's Not a Beauty Pageant!

release date: Jan 01, 2013
It's Not a Beauty Pageant!
This dissertation explores the adaptation of traditionally objectified women's spaces, into an arena for leadership development, research which incorporates the development of culturally relevant mechanisms of leadership training within Indigenous societies. Cultural pageants offer a place for young women to become spokespersons on social justice issues, without the sexual objectification of entering beauty pageants. Such pageants also provide a glimpse of how cultural groups wish their national identity to be portrayed to the general public. Fifty years in the making, today's Native Nations cultural pageants have been decolonized to present images of young leaders, confident in their heritage, introducing themselves in their Native language, and committed to cultural continuity and sustainable Nations. This research examines a state-wide Alaska Native pageant, Miss World Eskimo Indian Olympics, from three perspectives: 1) The young women who develop culturally based leadership skills; 2) The community, who gains language and cultural, revitalization and maintenance role models; 3) And the general public, who gains a much needed positive representation of a contemporary Indigenous women. This study draws from interdisciplinary theories and research methodologies (including observation, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, surveys, and archival research) and follows the young women through to the contest at the national level, Miss Indian World, run annually in Albuquerque, through Gathering of Nations. The underlying hypothesis is that women use cultural pageants as a stepping stone to advance their cultural leadership. In doing so, they promote factors of community well-being affecting Indigenous communities, such as suicide prevention, substance abuse, and language and cultural revitalization.

Their Way of Life: A Case Study of Leadership at Denali River Cabins & Kantishna Roadhouse
Contemporary Indigenous women's literature illustrates how American Indian women facilitate adaptation from "traditional" communities to diverse urban communities. The objective of this study is to examine how Northern Athabascan women lead in communities which are not exclusive to these Indigenous peoples. The use of Athabascan values such as self-sufficiency, hard work, practice of traditions, caring, sharing, family relations, and respect for elders and others, can be seen as one example of how women lead in non-"traditional" communities. This thesis examines Athabascan women leaders who have worked at two seasonal Native-owned hotels in Alaska as a case study to examine how women lead. By analyzing the women of Doyon Tourism Inc. through the framework of Athabascan values, evidence of cultural continuity can be seen through the sustained use of "traditional" values.

Contemporary French Philosophy

release date: Nov 01, 2001
Contemporary French Philosophy
French philosophy and cultural theory continue to hold a prestigious and influential position in European thought. One of the central themes of contemporary French philosophy is its concern with the theoretical and political status of the subject, a question which has been broached by structuralists and poststructuralists through an analysis of the construction of the subject in and by language, discourse, power and ideology.Contemporary French Philosophy outlines the construction of the subject in modern philosophy, focusing in particular on the seminal work of Althusser, Lacan, Derrida and Foucault. The book interrogates some of the most influential perspectives on the question of the subject to contest those postmodern voices which announce its disappearance or death. It argues instead that the question of the subject persists, even in those perspectives which seek to abandon it altogether.Providing a broad introduction to the field and an original analysis of some of the most influential theorists of the 20th Century, the book will be of great interest to political and literary theorists, cultural historians, as well as to philosophers.

Visualizing Love and Longing in Song Dynasty Paintings of Women

release date: Jan 01, 2001
Visualizing Love and Longing in Song Dynasty Paintings of Women
The nature of emotion, particularly how it is manifested, has been a concern of Chinese theorists since the early imperial period. One way that this concern came to be expressed in certain genres of Chinese art and literature was in the conception of elite women as preoccupied with romance. In the Song dynasty (960-1279), painters and poets engage in an extensive dialogue on the meanings of attachments between men and women, with the stages of the love relationship coded as desire, love, longing and heartbreak. An examination of extant paintings from this period reveals that this construction pervades the cultural productions of both court figures and intellectuals. This dissertation analyzes Song dynasty paintings of women in love in light of the construction of both femininity and masculinity, the nature of representation, and text-image relationships, and considers the authorship and reception of these works.
