Background: Many children in the UK are bereaved of a parent or family member each year. This bereavement can have long-term implications for their well-being particularly in terms of mental health and educational attainment. However, there is a lack of consensus over the efficacy of childhood bereavement interventions and the components that constitute a robust intervention strategy. -- Aim: This literature review evaluates childhood bereavement interventions, with the purpose of establishing the effectiveness of interventions and identifying which components of an intervention are the most successful. -- Method: A search was conducted on the following databases; Medline, CINHAL and PsychInfo, and ten papers were identified for detailed analysis. -- Findings: The papers selected presented challenges in terms of their comparability and shared limitations were identified in terms of methodology, sampling techniques and measures of exposure and outcome. Synthesis was facilitated through linguistic thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified: the positive effects of group work for bereaved children, training in coping skills for bereaved children, support and guidance for parents and the need for more comprehensive interventions provided by trained staff. -- Conclusion: There is the potential for these four elements to form the basis for guidelines to standardise child bereavement services. Based on current evidence, introducing guidelines would help to regulate service provision for children and their families across the UK and ensure that every child has access to a specialist bereavement service. However, further research is needed particularly in terms of how bereavement interventions are evaluated and the involvement of multiagency support.
