"Yankee Doodle" originated in Europe but was adapted by the American colonials and became a rallying song during the Revolutionary War. The Vondels, a Dutch family settling on a farm north of Long Island Sound, were inspired by this song, titled "Janke Duedel" in Dutch, as the frightening dangers of war came surprisingly close to their land. Janke Duedel reflects the culture and lifestyle of the time and changes wrought by the spiraling events of war. The Vondels were neither educated nor rich but were industrious and steadfast in their resolve to overcome faults and family conflicts. Their inner resolve and strength of character saw them through the agony of sons fighting in the Continental army and the horror of battles fought so close to home. Just as "Janke Duedel" became "Yankee Doodle," the Vondels faced the future - not as Dutch living in America - but as Americans with hope in their hearts.
