The art of essay-writing is rare nowadays. This is a collection of nine essays in the best tradition. They are valuable for a sociologist through their penetration of crucial problem situations of our society, through the questions they suggest, and through the manner in which they unliven our sociological imagination. Although our science has advanced considerably in developing concepts and systems we need from time to time the ideas of an inspiring observer who, not-withstanding his good sociological background, tries to understand the predicament of our society by means of the approach proper to an educated man who is able to communicate in his own language and symbols.

This book, a companion volume to Mass Culture previously published by the Free Press, is primarily concerned with leisure as a social phenomenon in the modern world, especially in America -- with, if you like, leisure as a problem. It contains forty articles written by philosophers, journalists, and social scientists, plus a reproduction of the definition of leisure from the Oxford English Dictionary and a 28-page bibliography of scholarly materials published (in English) on the subject since 1900.

Few American presidents have exercised the constitutional authority of Commander in Chief with such determination and in such detail as Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. Commander in Chief is the story of FDR's war as it has never been told before -- a full-size picture of how he ran it, picked his key military leaders, and arranged events so that the Grand Alliance was directed from Washington. Individual chapters describe Roosevelt's relations with George C. Marshall, Ernest Joseph King, Henry Harley "Hap" Arnold, Archer Vandegrift, Douglas MacArthur, Chester W. Nimitz, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Joseph Warren Stilwell, and Curtis E. LeMay. - Publisher.
