Caught in the Baltic Tide

release date: May 16, 2022
Caught in the Baltic Tide
Original in its perspective and unusual in its setting, 'Caught in the Baltic Tide' offers a valuable addition to historical fiction of WWII. Following the fate of a British engineer, stranded in occupied Latvia, its focus is on the deep cultural and political tension of the Baltic frontier and the insidious realities of the internment of the blameless and the ordinary under Russian military occupation. Yet, the sweeping shadow of war is not the only tide that washes through the novel. Clean, quiet and innocent, 'Caught in the Baltic Tide' is, above all things, a book about love in a time of war. Its themes of rebirth, discovery and humanity sit against the backdrop of a poignant romance. At its core, 'Caught in the Baltic Tide' is the story of a man, lost and found, a stranger in a strange land and the sheer power of ordinary, human love in the face of hatred and despair. While its story resides in the past, 'Caught in the Baltic Tide' carries a timeless message for us all: to love and be loved is to conquer every enemy. Told with an incisive and personable voice, touching with subtlety and grace on heavy socio-political themes, evoking strong setting and possessed of well-drawn character, 'Caught in the Baltic Tide' is a well rounded read with considerable heart. 'Caught in the Baltic Tide' is a love story. It is also a personal journey and it is about the fate of a proud, prosperous and independent country. It is a 'must read'.

Guncrank Diaries

release date: Feb 09, 2021
Guncrank Diaries
The complete collection of John Connor's original Guncrank Diaries is all right here including excuses, alibis, pithy observations and general ephus. John Connor is a soldier, cop, father, lover of dogs, protector of the defenseless, guardian of what's right - and a fierce foe of what's wrong. He's fought evil, brutality and tyranny in the jungles of Vietnam, as a cop on the city streets of a major Southern California city, and in a host of god-forsaken places around the world. His friends often have very unusual names, and all remain fiercely loyal - and for very good reasons. This book isn't about what you think, either. Not at all. It's not just simply a series of columns John wrote for the pages of American Handgunner Magazine. They're stories, yes, but each has a meaning stronger than the words on the paper convey. Each one will drag deep-rooted, powerful memories from deep within you about things that were, or might have been. The effect this modest book will have on you won't buff out easily. Be prepared to be changed. What readers say about Guncrank Diaries: "Darn it Connor, stop it-stop it-stop it... my old eyes are not as tough as they used to be. Your story of the custom colt was just wonderful. I forwarded it to my wife ... now her eyes are leaking too. so just stop it!" Gary M. "I don't give a damn if the writer of Guncrank is or was a super secret special forces tacti-cool bad ass or if he was a truck driver or a mess sergeant. I like what he writes. I enjoy it because it is entertaining. And its usually just plain funny. So whoever you are thanks, I appreciate what your do or did." Just an Army Guy "Like fine wine, Connor's insights age well and remain cogent. More please." Doc H

Someone Else’s War

release date: Aug 22, 2019
Someone Else’s War
World War I was the first truly global conflict and its effects were felt across the British Empire. When war broke out in 1914, Great Britain had the largest empire, encompassing one quarter of the population of the world. Many colonial citizens were to be enlisted into the war effort and shipped from their homes in Africa, Asia and Australasia to fight on the battlefields of the Western Front. What was the experience of war like for citizens of empire, whether combatants or not? How did the empire affect countries administered by Great Britain but geographically located tens of thousands of miles from the conflict? In this book, John Connor tells the story of the people whose lives were profoundly affected by 'someone else's war' – dragged, against their will, into a geopolitical conflict vastly removed from their normal lives.

Anarchist Speculations

release date: Jan 01, 2016
Anarchist Speculations
"John Moore is an wildly under-valued voice in the realm of anarcho-primitivism most obviously, but also in a vision of anarchy as a flexible, current, non-ideological way of approaching life and thought. This over-due compilation of his three long-form essays and the most important shorter pieces (and some of his poetry), as well as what other folks had to say about him and his writings, demonstrates some of what anarchists lost when he died at a young age. But unbeknownst to those immersed in classical anarchist traditions, a new, second-wave of anarchism (akin and indeed roughly contemporaneous with second-wave feminism) was stirring. The Situationists represent a convenient marker of the transition point, and serve as origin for the remarkable efflorescence of second-wave anarchism that is currently underway. Second-wave anarchism is still frequently not even recognised by anarchists and commentators who still cling to the idea that classical anarchism is the one and only true form of anarchism, even though first-wave anarchism was seen as moribund by Woodcock forty years ago. As a result, many outside the anarchist milieu are given the misleading impression that a) classical anarchism is anarchism, b) anarchism is therefore an historical phenomenon, and thus c) there are no current manifestations of anarchist praxis. Originally writing from an autonomist perspective, John was heavily influenced by anarcho-primitivist Fredy Perlman, particularly his early-1980s mythopoeia classic Against His-Story, Against Leviathan! John's key pamphlets Anarchy & Ecstasy and Lovebite challenged boundary distinctions in almost every respect, certainly concerning authorial authority. These pamphlets' employment of myth to this end was widely misunderstood, particularly by willfully literal-minded reviewers at Fifth Estate, which led John to even more determined attempts to subvert the authoritative voice through "The Book of Leveling" and poetry emphasizing cultural challenges to the Totality."--Archive.Org

Implementing In-Service Education And Training

release date: Dec 19, 2013
Implementing In-Service Education And Training
First published in 1993. In the 1990s the education service faces challenging new priorities. As teachers seek to extend their skills and develop new expertise, they need continued, career-long professional development. This volume examines how teachers play key roles in providing and evaluating training. From schools in four education authorities varied styles of INSET are represented, drawing on words and experience of those at the centre of INSET activities. The book reflects some of the problems they face and how these are resolved. The authors link theory with practice of evaluation. They address issues of principle alongside day-to-day experience. This book offers a range of alternative models and styles of INSET for practitioners to consider and adapt to their own needs. The authors recognize the value of practitioner knowledge and suggest that in evaluating INSET, teachers can articulate for themselves and for an outside audience provide much information about what it means to teach and learn.

The Future Is Imagined

release date: Mar 01, 2013
The Future Is Imagined
Who is this guy anyway? This might be your reaction on reading Russell John Connor's new book especially if you are an evolutionary biologist, economist, social scientist, psychotherapist or management consultant. In all of these fields the focus has been on making the uncertain certain by identifying mechanisms and processes. The Future Is Imagined confronts you with the reality that uncertainty is woven deeply into the fabric of life. At the heart of life and living is a gap in knowledge. Choice is the fundamental atom of life. When uncertainty and choice are brought centre-stage there are profound consequences for the way that we think about life and all living organisms. It radically reshapes how we think about thinking and it alters for good most of what we currently take as evolutionary gospel, applied economics, psychotherapy, best-practice human resource management, organisation design and social policy-making. Revealing and possibly revolutionary! Time, uncertainty and the nature of being are dealt with in an extraordinarily relevant way. Steve Jones, MA Oxon, the author's best friend.

Let Slip the Dogs of War

release date: Mar 16, 2012
Let Slip the Dogs of War
Merriam Press Military Monograph 96. Second Edition (March 2012). On July 15, 1950, only a few weeks after North Korea invaded South Korea with overwhelming force, General Douglas MacArthur authorized the creation of a Provisional Raider Company to blow up bridges and railway tunnels behind enemy lines. Of 800 potential volunteers, 115 made the cut and endured weeks of grueling amphibious and demolitions training. On September 9, they and a small contingent of British Commandos left to conduct a raid at Kunsan, South Korea. On subsequent assignments, the Raiders went ashore at Inchon with the Marines, and with the X Corps at Wonsan. They conducted long-range intelligence-gathering patrols in which they also inserted and removed Korean agents. During the Chosin Reservoir campaign they were assigned to take and hold open the mountain passes for the withdrawal of the Marines and the 7th Division. The Raiders were evacuated from North Korea on December 14, 1950, and assigned anti-guerrilla activities in South Korea. At Chang-to they were cut off and surrounded by two North Korean regiments. On April 1, 1951, all Ranger and Special Operations units were disbanded because the Army high command believed they were not being utilized properly. This is the story of that unit as told by one of its members, John Connor. In about seven months of almost continual combat, they managed to accumulate four battle stars, a bronze arrowhead for a combat assault landing, Presidential Unit citations from both the U.S. Navy and the Republic of Korea, along with a special commendation from the commanding general of X Corps for imposing losses on the enemy far in excess of their own numbers. Contents: * Introduction * Prologue * Childhood * Basic Training * Occupation Duty * Camp McGill * Kusan * Inchon and Kimpo * North Korea * Chosin Reservoir * South Korea * The Battle at Chang-to * Business as Usual * Deactivation * Epilogue * Afterword * Satellite photo of Korean Peninsula at night * Surrender leaflet and news article * Presidential Unit Citation * Personal message to General Collins from GHQ, 1950 * Fragmentary order to Colonel Ely * Commendation to CO, Special Activities Group * Permanent orders to John Connor * Bibliography * 31 photos * 7 documents * 2 maps.
