Great Floods of the 1800s

release date: Jan 01, 2021
Great Floods of the 1800s
Floods in the 1800s were unpredictable. Perry County, Pennsylvania, residents suffered the losses of houses, outbuildings, & bridges in the Ice Flood of 1846, the Corn Flood of 1847, and the Ice Flood of 1865. Sadly, crewmembers died in 1886 when a freight train fell into icy floodwaters near the Duncannon Iron Company. But the worst flood of the century came on June 1, 1889. Floodwaters east and west in the county caused great loss to the residents. Newport was inundated. Locals had to fight fire while standing waist deep in the rising floodwater, and hardy men rescued people from their second story windows.

The Colour of Clouds

release date: Jan 01, 2019
The Colour of Clouds
The Colour of Clouds features poems that focus on the Greater Toronto area which includes a variety of towns, hamlets, cities and landscapes with a rich history and culture. In a poetic and introspective style, this book explores the loss of our links to the past and how the pace of development threatens the beauty of our heritage, both built and natural. Featured in the poems are writers from Stephen Leacock to Lucy Maude Montgomery to Mazo de la Roche, and artists such as Milne, Gladstone, Varley and Macdonald who were inspired by the landscapes of these regions. The central themes in this collection are: losses and gains over time in the places where we reside; the interplay between our natural world and the built environment; and the often tenuous connection between the present and the past in the spaces that we inhabit; and ecofeminist theories relating to the exploitation of the natural world and the significant connection of women to nature.

The Gingerbread Girl

release date: Sep 26, 2017
The Gingerbread Girl
The Gingerbread Girl is a pastiche of 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens, which was published in monthly instalments in 1837. The twist is that the heroine, thirteen year old Amy Watkins, better known to her friends as Ginge, is no victim like Oliver, but a very feisty young lady. The novel should appeal to girl readers between the ages of 9-12 years and is a Christmas book. The date is November and December 1875 and Amy is an orphan living in Bethnal Green in the East End of London. Her seven year old brother Billy, for whom she has sole responsibility, is very sick and in the workhouse school hospital in Leytonstone. Amy bakes gingerbread girls and sells them at Bethnal Green market as a means to survive. She pays rent for a small room in a lodging house, where she has access to the cooking range in the basement kitchen. Elsa, her landlady, threatens Amy with eviction if she does not run her errands. As few houses had ranges, Amy does what Elsa wants and is drawn, unawares, into a criminal underworld of burglary and art forgery. John Constable's work is said to be easy to forge, so once it is plain that Amy has artistic talent, she inadvertently copies parts of his paintings. She befriends Sweep, a road sweeper, one of a community of characters who live cheek by jowl in the lodging house, and with his help, and support from the other lodgers, she tries to look after Billy and find an escape from the criminals.

Anika

release date: May 28, 2014
Anika
This is the story of two girls, Anika and Anna, both twelve years old. Anika lives in Port Royal, Jamaica in the seventeenth century and is forced into pearl diving and piracy by her mother’s lover. She must dive and locate the wreck of a Spanish treasure galleon, ‘Don Carlos’. Anna is a London schoolgirl of today. With her friend, Jodie, she accompanies her Jamaican father, who is a historical detective, and a team of marine archaeologists to the Caribbean to hunt for the elusive ‘Don Carlos’. During their search for the galleon they discover a second wreck on the seabed, the pirate ship, ‘Black Lady’ and Anika and Anna’s lives become entwined. There are two kinds of treasure seekers and this novel is about both. The first are pirates, simply wishing to profit from stolen goods. The second are archaeologists, who try to uncover the truth about the past; people’s lives, their stories. The novel shows that although the girls are separated by three centuries and live in different countries, their family love, friendships and courage help them deal with the loss of their fundamental right to freedom.
