Metaphor and Imagination in Medieval Jewish Thought

release date: Dec 12, 2019
Metaphor and Imagination in Medieval Jewish Thought
This book reveals how Moses ibn Ezra, Judah Halevi, Moses Maimonides, and Shem Tov ibn Falaquera understood metaphor and imagination, and their role in the way human beings describe God. It demonstrates how these medieval Jewish thinkers engaged with Arabic-Aristotelian psychology, specifically with regard to imagination and its role in cognition. Dianna Lynn Roberts-Zauderer reconstructs the process by which metaphoric language is taken up by the imagination and the role of imagination in rational thought. If imagination is a necessary component of thinking, how is Maimonides’ idea of pure intellectual thought possible? An examination of select passages in the Guide, in both Judeo-Arabic and translation, shows how Maimonides’ attitude towards imagination develops, and how translations contribute to a bifurcation of reason and imagination that does not acknowledge the nuances of the original text. Finally, the author shows how Falaquera’s poetics forges a new direction for thinking about imagination.

RV & Camping Cookbook - Healthy Living on a Budget
RV & Camping Cookbook - Healthy Living on a Budget The Ultimate Guide for Recipes, Tips, and Tricks, for the Road Nomad Lifestyle Enjoy Poultry, Seafood, Vegetarian & Vegan Full Meal Recipes - Desserts Included The RV lifestyle can mean true freedom and adventure, but it also means sitting and driving for long periods of time. Are you tired of hotdogs, marshmallows, and eating at the "Golden Arches?" Are foil packets just not your thing? If you're looking to continue your healthy lifestyle choices while embracing your nomadic impulses, this book is for you. Just because you're living in an RV doesn't mean you should sacrifice your health! In this book, I will share numerous tips, tricks, and lifehacks for staying healthy while living full time in an RV. As a kid, I spent many summers traveling all over the United States with my family in our 1986 Winnebago motorhome. It even had the iconic giant "W" painted on the side. My mom was really innovative when it came to cooking meals while on the road. Of course, my siblings and I loved campfire hotdogs and toasting marshmallows, but that was a rare occurrence during my family's RV outings. When I became an adult and moved out on my own, I realized the importance of getting healthy and staying healthy. I currently have an office job, but still, spend as much time as I can in my own more modern Airstream RV. I carry those healthy lifestyle choices that I have made in my everyday life into my life when I am vacationing in my RV. Making those beneficial lifestyle choices can be even harder to maintain when RV living is your full-time 24/7 life. When the open road is full of fast food options at nearly every Interstate exit, how do you resist the temptation to make a quick drive-thru stop? I can show you how! We'll discuss how to exercise when space is a limited commodity, what staples should be in your tiny galley kitchen, and tips on how to make RV life fun, affordable, and exciting. I have also included 30 budget-friendly, healthy, unconventional recipes that you can make in your own RV kitchen. For a limited time, if you purchase the paperback version of this book on Amazon, you can download the eBook version for FREE! This is a great deal because the eBook version contains all of the pictures in the book in full color. Be safe and happy travels!

Mortality and Mythicization

Child's novels are primarily marketed as a suspense series....Despite its cliché villains and suspenseful mode, however, the Reacher series remains, at heart, a series about a man who is a detective....For Reacher, being a detective is not an occupation, it is a worldview.... Detective fiction initially evolved into two classic forms: the analytical and the hardboiled...." -- Pages 2-3.

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) replicates in the nucleus and buds through the nuclear membrane to access the cytosol and complete the maturation process. The HSV-1 protein pUL31, along with its binding partner, pUL34, has been previously shown to be required for nucleocapsids to successfully bud through the nuclear membrane. pUL31 is also required for efficient viral DNA synthesis and packaging. After the HSV-1 exits the nucleus, the capsid acquires several accessory proteins (tegument) and finally a mature envelope by budding into vesicles of the trans-Golgi network (TGN). These virion-laden vesicles traffic toward the cell periphery and through cortical actin until ultimately the virion is secreted upon fusion of the TGN vesicle with the plasma membrane. The data presented here reveals new roles for pUL31, as cells infected with a UL31-null virus were delayed for viral gene expression as well as activation of NF[kappa]B and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) in multiple cell lines. At least one representative from each kinetic class of viral genes was examined at various times post infection. The protein expression defects were not caused by a failure to enter cells, was not rescued by ICP27 expressed in trans and correlated with NF[kappa]B activation. The data shows that these defects were not observed in the absence of the pUL31 binding partner, pUL34, and that while most pUL31 is expressed at late times post infection, low levels are detectable as early as 2 hours post infection. Data presented in this work also demonstrates a role for the actin motor myosin Va in the secretion of HSV-1 virions. Expression of two isoforms of dominant negative myosin Va (DN-myoVa) decreased virion secretion by 5075% as well as significantly decreased surface expression of viral glycoproteins B, M and D. DN-myoVa colocalized with TGN markers and the conformation of native myosin Va in infected cells was altered by 4 hours post infection. These data suggest that myosin Va is involved in the egress of virion-laden TGN vesicles as they transit through cortical actin toward the plasma membrane.

A Feedforward Compensation Technique for Use in Mitigating Platform Induced Jitter

release date: Jan 01, 2010
A Feedforward Compensation Technique for Use in Mitigating Platform Induced Jitter
To mitigate jitter in a directed-energy laser system, caused by mechanical vibrations without feedback from the target, a feedforward compensations technique is proposed. The technique requires that the position of the beam at the target be calculated in real time, which is accomplished by determining the exact position and orientation of the platform that fires the laser beam. Once the position of the beam at the target is calculated, it is used in a feedforward control algorithm to mitigate the platform induced jitter. This research demonstrates that it is possible to calculate a beam's position at a target approximately 5 m away with micro-meter accuracy for a complex motion in real time based solely on platform and mirror positions. This calculated beam position is then used in a feedforward compensation technique to mitigate platform induced jitter by over 90%. These results have the potential to improve the aimpoint maintenance on a target and significantly reduce the power required for a directed energy weapon system.
