A House Divided: the Porters of Niagara
Margaret Steele grew up in Niagara Falls. As a descendant of the Porters, who were among the first European immigrants to settle in the area, she was always hearing interesting and colorful stories of her ancestors. Late in life she became especially interested in Elizabeth and Peter A. Porter, the children of General Peter B. Porter and his southern wife Letitia Breckinridge. Elizabeth and Peter were born in the 1820s and lived in a time of extraordinary change. New villages and farms were springing up, railroads were beginning to crisscross the countryside, and steamships were replacing sailing vessels. It was also a time of mounting tension and division in the new nation. Native Americans were being brutally expelled from their lands and recurring epidemics of disease swept through communities, leaving death and despair in their wake. Slavery was a stain on the country, one that ultimately culminated in the tragedy of the Civil War. In Niagara, where the great cataract's thunderous fall seemed to presage the catastrophe to come, Elizabeth and Peter Porter met the challenges of their century with courage and conviction. This book, an amalgam of fact and fiction, tells the story of their lives as it imagines their loves, their passions and their principles.
