Les services religieux donnent un sens aux événements et nous apportent l’espoir tandis que la communauté se rassemble affectueusement autour de nous et nous soutient. Mais les services religieux prennent fin, les parents et les amis retournent chez eux, et nous entrons, seuls, dans un pays nouveau et étrange, un pays où l’une des personnes qui donnait un sens à notre vie est absente. Il y a maintenant des espaces vides dans notre esprit, des espaces vides dans les jours et les nuits. Souvent, au moment où nous nous y attendons le moins, les souffrances et les soucis reviennent, encore et encore, parfois comme une vague océanique qui déferle, ou comme l’eau mêlée de sable qui suinte lentement d’un morceau de bois de grève qu’on vient de soulever et qui cherche à retrouver sa place. Ce processus dure très longtemps. Des années, et non pas des jours ou des mois, si l’être cher nous était très proche. Certaines pertes — un enfant, un époux ou une épouse — ne sont jamais «surmontées». Mais, si nous sommes sages, et si nous avons de la chance et du courage, et si nous sommes soutenus pour parcourir, encore et encore, la terre sacrée, la perte cessera peu à peu de nous dominer. Nous pourrons choisir. Nous pourrons faire marche arrière et quitter une zone dangereuse si nécessaire, ou envisager la possibilité d’y revenir le jour où nous en aurons la force. Nous pourrons sentir sur notre visage les embruns sans craindre la noyade et même apprécier le goût du sel sur nos lèvres, car cette perte dramatique s’accompagne d’une bouffée d’amour pour la personne disparue et peut-être du sentiment que, dans cet univers mystérieux, nous sommes encore ensemble, nous sommes unis dans un amour dont les liens ne peuvent être défaits.
