Personalised Medicine

release date: May 11, 2026
Personalised Medicine
This book sets out a critical sociological approach to ‘personalised medicine’ (PM), not only highlighting its limitations and flaws but also emphasising its hopeful potentialities for a better medicine in the future. Bringing together perspectives from science and technology studies, medical sociology, law, and bioethics, this book traces PM from its historical roots in disease classification and predictive genetics to its data-driven present of digital infrastructures, algorithmic prediction, and precision therapeutics. Across seven chapters, it explores how measurement, classification, and datafication shape medical knowledge; how infrastructures and platforms distribute benefits and risks; how publics are imagined as patients, consumers, and citizens; and how privacy, access, and equity are negotiated in global health systems. This book concludes by outlining possible futures grounded in solidarity, patient-centred care, and democratic innovation – offering practical ways to shift PM from a privilege for the few to a shared public good. Written for scholars and practitioners in science and technology studies, sociology of medicine, health policy, and bioethics, as well as for clinicians and policymakers, this book will engage readers seeking to understand – and reshape – the social futures of data-intensive healthcare. It will also be useful for policy makers debating the implementation of different PM projects in local or national healthcare systems.

The Cruden Farm Garden Diaries

release date: Apr 18, 2017
The Cruden Farm Garden Diaries
"Cruden Farm was given to the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch in 1928 as a wedding present from her husband Sir Keith Murdoch. The farm at Langwarrin, about 50 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, was a place she cherished throughout her long life. The beautiful garden she created there with gardener Michael Morrison is one of Australia's finest. In 1984 Michael began to keep garden diaries, a practice that endures to this day. He writes of the plants that have thrived and those they've lost, of terrible heat and freak storms, of escaped cows and memorable parties. The diaries recount the plans he and Dame Elisabeth hatched, the triumphs and tensions, the sheer fun of making a garden together. In an age preoccupied with selfies and spotlight chasers, Michael Morrison's diaries remind us of a different way of living - of more than forty years spent quietly but passionately dedicated to one special garden and its unique owner."

40 Days of Discipleship 1

release date: Jun 26, 2016
40 Days of Discipleship 1
We recommend that church leaders pursue formal education that gives both breadth and depth. However, formal education is not practical for everyone. We recommend here a plan by which a person might use free resources from the Grace Communion International website to guide them in their education. There are two important components of this list: 1) prioritization and 2) breadth.1) Prioritization: Our website has more than 1000 articles, and it can be difficult to know where to start. Of these articles, which are the most important? We try to provide some guidance on that by putting them into three groups. This book is the first of three groups. These are not necessarily levels of difficulty (most of our articles are from publications aimed at a lay audience), but this organization provides some guidance about how to spread the reading out.Since most of the articles on our website were previously published in our denominational magazines, you may have read these articles before. Nevertheless, do not assume that you know what is in them! Almost all of our website articles have been edited within the last four years, to remove phrasings we now realize to be erroneous, and in some cases, to add insights we've had more recently. (Some of the articles were originally published 20 years ago, and some have been extensively revised to bring them up to date with our current theological understanding.)2) Breadth: Do not study only the topics that already interest you. You (and the members of your church) need exposure to other important topics. Read all the articles in group 1 before you proceed to group 2. We have attempted to give breadth in each sequence, with about the same amount of reading in each area. We have grouped the articles into 2000-2500 words for each day. If you read about 20 minutes per day, you'll be done in 40 days. Some people might want to go faster, others slower. Since you set your own pace, you will need some self-discipline to continue the journey.

What Does the Bible Say about the Kingdom of God?

release date: Oct 07, 2014
What Does the Bible Say about the Kingdom of God?
Sometimes Jesus talked about the kingdom of God as if it were already here, and sometimes he talked as if it were far in the future. Which is it, and how does it affect life right now? Another way to approach the question is to observe that Jesus preached about the kingdom of God, but his disciples preached about Jesus. Why this difference in focus, and why does it matter for us today? In this collection of articles, we look at what Jesus said about the kingdom, the parables he used to describe it, and how Paul integrated that into his message of salvation through faith in Christ. In the last half of this book, Gary Deddo takes a more theological look at the kingdom and its relationship to the work we do in the church today.

Exploring the Word of God: the Four Gospels

release date: Oct 03, 2014
Exploring the Word of God: the Four Gospels
The person and work of Jesus Christ is at the heart of Christianity. So we would expect the Christian Scriptures to include an account of Jesus' life. But why do we have four - the Gospels According to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? Isn't this redundant? Wouldn't one be enough? On the contrary, our knowledge of Jesus Christ would be incomplete if we had only one Gospel. Or even if we had three Gospels but were missing one. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each told the story from a different perspective, because each had a different audience in mind. We tend to blur these four distinctive portraits of Jesus together. But knowing how an act or saying of Jesus fits in with each author's perspective can greatly enhance our understanding of its meaning. In this volume, we examine how each Gospel differs from the others, and numerous detailed studies. This volume includes 95 articles about the four Gospels collected from Christian Odyssey magazine and other publications of Grace Communion International. Illustrations by Ken Tunell. The articles were written over a span of 20 years - from the 1990s to 2013. They have been edited for this collection.

Christians and Old Testament Laws

release date: Mar 15, 2014
Christians and Old Testament Laws
These articles were written in the years 1995-1999 as we re-examined the question of Old Testament laws. Although several Old Testament laws were foundational to our existence as a denomination, we studied them afresh from Scripture, and found that we had built on the wrong foundation. There was a tremendous cost, both financial and human, to our doctrinal change, but we were compelled by the word of God to change. You can read more about our doctrinal journey at www.gci.org/aboutus/history.The articles have all been edited in 2012-2014 by Michael Morrison. We are happy to share them with others, not only on our website but also in this format. We believe that these studies can help many Christians come to a better understanding of how the Old Testament is informative, but not normative, for Christians today.

Exploring the Word of God: the Letters of Paul

release date: Oct 25, 2013
Exploring the Word of God: the Letters of Paul
In this lay-level commentary, Michael Morrison, instructor in New Testament at Grace Communion Seminary, walks through the letters of Paul chapter by chapter, showing how Paul presents the gospel of salvation - given to us by Jesus Christ out of his love for us. This affects who we are and how we live. "Exploring the Word of God" began in the mid 1990s. We were able to print a volume on the books of Moses, but the series was never continued, and the first volume has fallen out of print. However, we had a substantial amount of material written, and we added more in the intervening years. These materials have been edited and are on our website. We have also compiled our articles on Paul's letters and are happy to make them available through print-on-demand publishing. Paul's letters are a key part of Christian theology and teaching. They not only show that the foundation of salvation is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, but also explain how salvation should affect the way we live with one another. One theme found throughout is the grace of God: * by grace God sent Jesus to be our Savior* by grace we are saved, not by any good works that we do* by grace the Spirit works in us, transforming us to be more like Christ* by grace we love one another* by grace we will be resurrected with Christ and be given immortality with him.Paul's letters show a church leader driven by his love for Christ, and driven by his love for the people of Christ. There is warm pastoral concern, and a firm insistence on truth. There are parts that are hard to understand, some parts that are easy to misunderstand, and large sections in which the message is clear and strong. Although we do not have comments written for every chapter, we will proceed through the letters chapter by chapter for a richly rewarding walk with the apostle.

Using Microsoft Word 2013 for Academic Papers

release date: May 17, 2013
Using Microsoft Word 2013 for Academic Papers
Microsoft Word is a popular word-processing program. It is capable of doing many things, and because of that, it is complex, sometimes difficult to use - and sometimes it does things we did not ask it to do. However, after we learn how to control Word, it will make the process of preparing papers much easier. We will find that it can do things we want it to do - we just need to learn how to use it. This tutorial is designed for a variety of users. For beginnings, some of what we say will be too complicated. For more experienced users, some of what we say will be too simplistic. So feel free to skip the parts you do not want. But if you think something is too complicated, you might want to skim it anyway, just so that you'll know that such things can be done, if you ever need them. Store it away for a later day. Our focus in this document is for academic papers. Other users will probably find this information helpful, too, but our focus is on academic papers. Some of the default settings in Word are designed for business use, and academic papers require different settings. So we need to learn how to change the settings in Word. We examine each of the menu ribbons and features, skipping those that are not needed for academic papers. We spend the most space for File, Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Review, and View. Includes more than 100 screenshots to illustrate how to do it.
