Conventionally-designed digital circuits are encountering speed limits which cannot be overcome due to constraints imposed by the basic laws of physics. Synchronous designs are relatively easy to produce, but require the system clock to run at the speed of the slowest part of the entire circuit. Self-timed (asynchronous) circuits offer the promise of being able to use resources more effectively, however they require much more design effort while not always delivering the expected gains. This thesis presents a method of combining the advantages of both synchronous and asynchronous techniques by introducing and developing, for the first time, a clocked version of the well-known Muller C-Element as part of this research. Results of experiments demonstrating its effectiveness are given along with recommendations for further research and development.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Central Statistical Office has reprinted tables from the earlier publication and added new text, photographs, and charts. This new publication provides the main statistical series illustrating the war effort of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, unless otherwise stated, covering period from September 1939 to August 1945.

Relatively inexpensive computer programs combining a word processor with a voice synthesizer are becoming increasingly available. The companies producing these programs are making claims that the use of a computerized voice synthesizer during the revision stage of the writing process will improve the writing product. This study examined the differences between the writing product of a group using a voice synthesizer/word processor and a group using only a word processor. Analysis of the data collected indicates that the voice synthesizer, used without teacher intervention, has an adverse impact upon writers of varying academic ability. (Author).
