Long and Short-term Impact of Tourism on Growth in Small Developing States

release date: May 23, 2025
Long and Short-term Impact of Tourism on Growth in Small Developing States
We explore the relationship of recessions and tourism cycles on the economic performance of tourism-dependent Small Developing States (SDS). Using local projections regressions, we examine how these cycles affect potential output growth and its drivers—investment and employment—and estimate the short-run elasticity of tourism growth to economic activity. Our findings reveal that the long-term influence of recessions are less persistent in SDS than in larger emerging markets, as tourist-dependent economies experience faster recoveries from recessions. Moreover, we use Cabo Verde as a natural experiment to assess the short-term relation of tourism on growth and found that tourism's short-run elasticity to growth is around 0.4 over 12 months, with limited spillovers to non-tourism areas.

Embers of Einar

release date: Jun 28, 2022
Embers of Einar
Authors DG FARNSWORTH and RODRIGO GARCÍA OLZA RODRIGO GARCÍA OLZA Novel Series Part 3 Einar often mentions his vivid imagination and the emotions that he lets control his thoughts -- admitting he is "rather easily carried away." He makes a surprising assumption that the ghosts' intentions are to "get hold of him." The 21-year-old appears to unconsciously project his most horrific thoughts and faults upon the ghosts and, then, condemns the apparitions for this. Einar is usually alone in a Gothic intimidating Twin Peaks mansion; forbidden to explore its long narrow corridors and rooms never visited, filled with mysteries, collections of eccentric objects, and secrets; where eyes of portraits and murals appear to follow as he explores, and where weird haunting sounds echo through the estate. A need to have space of one's own is a strong theme. Einar grew-up in the witch town Tella, Spain, among caterers and servants with not much privacy, little space, no need or capability to maintain secrets, and no awareness of his own personal failings or how they could be related. The Secret Garden on Alcatraz Island offers room to develop unhindered, unguided, and without help. Similar to flesh diminishing from the skull of a cadaver, while gruesomeness amasses, the quaint lighthouse that once restored a sense of physical well-being effectively falls away into a hellish tomb of stone and bone. Nowhere to hide on the island with inward fears transfigured by an almost intangible menace of too much imagination. Two sets of eyes of the ghost gaze upon him. One set of eyes had the world explained but didn't have the clever ways of persuading or tricking someone to do what one wants; which is needed to use this knowledge effectively; someone who learned empathy's secret but not the capability to direct it to the correct object, and was delivered wings but wound-up not operating inside the family facade. Einar certainly knows that he's alien and intrinsically different to himself: the remains of two - something excluded by or opposite to another thing. During their first meeting, the psychiatrist gave Einar four multicolored notebooks (he calls binders) to keep record of thoughts, feelings, and dreams. One of the first things Einar expressed was that he was technically a twin but it doesn't actually count because Joaquín died in the first trimester. Dr. Ravencraft jumped all over this statement saying, indeed, it does count, that he's still a twin: a womb twin survivor. The doctor, very interested in the strange phenomena, wants to know more; so Einar tells his story the best he understands. The psychiatrist's intense interest centers around the fact that little academic writing exists about ghost twins. While living in Tella, Spain, Einar went to another psychological counselor about this, who belittled him - expressing no empathy, knowledge or understanding of vanishing twins. His previous therapist emphasized that his twin was only a mass of cells and it was quite apparent not destined to survive, that his sensitivity and concern should be more directed toward his mother's miscarriage, instead - to not make such a big deal about it. Einar never discussed the matter, again, after feeling shamed. He sincerely feels the need for some respect, to be listened to, including maybe some sort of validation about his own grief and trauma. The modus operandi of "Embers of Einar: White Binder" is the elimination of inauthentic elements of the self in order to reach the core personality within. It's a serial form of vanishing act, like Einar's vanishing twin, thus the death of the archetypal (never-seen, only spoken-of) transgressive person to overtake the personality. For Einar this identification with the unthinkable is an act of defiance, a way of burying that shame about what is perfectly natural. Tension between losing himself and finding himself in others often overwhelms.

A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes

release date: Jul 27, 2021
A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes
"This is a beautiful farewell to two extraordinary people. It enthralled and moved me, and it will move and enthrall anyone who has ever entered the glorious literary world of Gabriel García Márquez."—Salman Rushdie "In A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes Rodrigo Garcia finds the words that cannot be said, the moments that signal all that is possible to know about the passage from life to death, from what love brings and the loss it leaves. With details as rich as any giant biography, you will find yourself grieving as you read, grateful for the profound art that remains a part of our cultural heritage."—Walter Mosley, New York Times bestselling author of Down the River Unto the Sea "An intensely personal reflection on [Garcia's] father's legacy and his family bonds, tender in its treatment and stirring in its brevity."— Booklist (starred review) The son of one of the greatest writers of our time—Nobel Prize winner and internationally bestselling icon Gabriel García Márquez—remembers his beloved father and mother in this tender memoir about love and loss. In March 2014, Gabriel García Márquez, one of the most acclaimed writers of the twentieth century, came down with a cold. The woman who had been beside him for more than fifty years, his wife Mercedes Barcha, was not hopeful; her husband, affectionately known as "Gabo," was then nearly 87 and battling dementia. I don't think we'll get out of this one, she told their son Rodrigo. Hearing his mother's words, Rodrigo wondered, "Is this how the end begins?" To make sense of events as they unfolded, he began to write the story of García Márquez's final days. The result is this intimate and honest account that not only contemplates his father's mortality but reveals his remarkable humanity. Both an illuminating memoir and a heartbreaking work of reportage, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes transforms this towering genius from literary creator to protagonist, and paints a rich and revelatory portrait of a family coping with loss. At its center is a man at his most vulnerable, whose wry humor shines even as his lucidity wanes. Gabo savors affection and attention from those in his orbit, but wrestles with what he will lose—and what is already lost. Throughout his final journey is the charismatic Mercedes, his constant companion and the creative muse who was one of the foremost influences on Gabo's life and his art. Bittersweet and insightful, surprising and powerful, A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes celebrates the formidable legacy of Rodrigo's parents, offering an unprecedented look at the private family life of a literary giant. It is at once a gift to Gabriel García Márquez's readers worldwide, and a grand tribute from a writer who knew him well. "You read this short memoir with a feeling of deep gratitude. Yes, it is a moving homage by a son to his extraordinary parents, but also much more: it is a revelation of the hidden corners of a fascinating life. A Farewell to Gabo and Mercedes is generous, unsentimental and wise." —Juan Gabriel Vásquez, author of The Sound of Things Falling "A warm homage filled with both fond and painful memories." — Kirkus "Garcia's limpid prose gazes calmly at death, registering pain but not being overcome by it . . . the result is a moving eulogy that will captivate fans of the literary lion." — Publishers Weekly

Importing Inputs for Climate Change Mitigation: The Case of Agricultural Productivity

release date: Feb 04, 2019
Importing Inputs for Climate Change Mitigation: The Case of Agricultural Productivity
This paper estimates agricultural total factor productivity (TFP) in 162 countries between 1991 and 2015 and aims to understand sources of cross-country variations in agricultural TFP levels and its growth rates. Two factors affecting agricultural TFP are analyzed in detail – imported intermediate inputs and climate. We first show that these two factors are independently important in explaining agricultural TFP – imported inputs raise agricultural TFP; and higher temperatures and rainfall shortages impede TFP growth, particularly in low-income countries (LICs). We also provide a new evidence that, within LICs, those with a higher import component of intermediate inputs seem to be more shielded from the negative impacts of weather shocks.

Tarot

release date: Oct 03, 2017
Tarot
Part fairy tale, part horror story about characters who convince themselves they are alright. But at times the truth arrives and they can't get it off them -- and there is no answer, only a question. Tarot cards are not really meant to tell your fortune or future: the tarot aids in coming in contact with one's Higher Self because the most powerful information sources come from within. Sometimes the best way to move forward is to go backward because the path to a bright future requires a shadowy regression. Protagonist Rodrigo Garca Olza returns to the racetrack to train horses. Rodrigo is a vampire especially attracted to what he cannot define, who let go of a life planned for the life he shares in San Francisco with photographer/filmmaker Liam Mannering. Liam's film contemplates the many forms of erotic desire and shifting genders that both Shakespeare's "Cymbeline" and mythology's "Ganymede" release through various disguises of erotic attachment -- encouraging gender disruptions through less permitted forms of desire. And the necromancer, capable of every wickedness, brings back spirits of the dead to fight for him. Undead Spanish poet/playwright Federico Garcia Lorca searches for a way to be human, again.

Macro-Structural Policies and Income Inequality in Low-Income Developing Countries

release date: Jan 26, 2017
Macro-Structural Policies and Income Inequality in Low-Income Developing Countries
Despite sustained economic growth and rapid poverty reductions, income inequality remains stubbornly high in many low-income developing countries. This pattern is a concern as high levels of inequality can impair the sustainability of growth and macroeconomic stability, thereby also limiting countries’ ability to reach the Sustainable Development Goals. This underscores the importance of understanding how policies aimed at boosting economic growth affect income inequality. Using empirical and modeling techniques, the note confirms that macro-structural policies aimed at raising growth payoffs in low-income developing countries can have important distributional consequences, with the impact dependent on both the design of reforms and on country-specific economic characteristics. While there is no one-size-fits-all recipe, the note explores how governments can address adverse distributional consequences of reforms by designing reform packages to make pro-growth policies also more inclusive.

From Ambition to Execution

From Ambition to Execution
The formal launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) sets the global development agenda through 2030, placing significant emphasis on promoting social and environmental sustainability alongside economic growth and poverty reduction. Meeting the SDGs will require actions across a wide range of areas by both national governments and the international community. This paper examines the types of policies that developing countries will need to implement to foster economic transformation, to promote economic and social inclusion, and to meet key environmental objectives. Reducing inequality, achieving gender equity, and pricing energy and water resources appropriately receive particular attention.

Dollarization in Sub-Saharan Africa

release date: May 15, 2015
Dollarization in Sub-Saharan Africa
Dollarization—the use of foreign currencies as a medium of exchange, store of value, or unit of account—is a notable feature of financial development under macroeconomically fragile conditions. It has emerged as a key factor explaining vulnerabilities and currency crises, which have long been observed in Latin America, parts of Asia, and Eastern Europe. Dollarization is also present, prominently, in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where it remains significant and persistent at over 30 percent rates for both bank loans and deposits—although it has not increased significantly since 2001. However, progress in reducing dollarization has lagged behind other regions and, in this regard, it is legitimate to ask whether this phenomenon is an important concern in SSA. This study fills a gap in the literature by analyzing these issues with specific reference to the SSA region on the basis of the evidence for the past decade.

Managing Volatile Capital Flows: Experiences and Lessons for Sub-Saharan African Frontier Markets

Managing Volatile Capital Flows: Experiences and Lessons for Sub-Saharan African Frontier Markets
During the past three years the frontier markets of sub-Saharan Africa have received growing amounts of portfolio capital flows, with heightened interest from foreign investors. Compared with foreign direct investment, portfolio capital flows tend to be more volatile, and thus pose challenges for sub-Saharan African frontier markets. This study examines the evolution of capital flows since 2010 and discusses the policies these countries have designed to reduce risks from the inherent volatility of these flows.

Benchmarking Structural Transformation Across the World

Benchmarking Structural Transformation Across the World
This paper documents stylized facts on the process of structural transformation around the world and empirically analyzes its determinants using data on real value added by sector of economic activity (agriculture, manufacturing and services) for a panel of 168 countries over the period 1970-2010. The analysis points to large differences in sector shares both across and within regions as well as for countries at similar levels of economic development. Using both linear and quantile regression methods, it finds that a large proportion of the cross-country variation in sector shares can be accounted for by country characteristics, such as real GDP per capita, demographic structure, and population size. It also finds that policy and insitutional variables, such as product market reforms, openness to trade, human and physical capital, and finance improve the baseline model’s ability to account for the variation in sectoral shares across countries.

Social Rights As Fundamental Human Rights

release date: Feb 01, 2012
Social Rights As Fundamental Human Rights
If we think about the absolute supremacy of human life, a life that, to be understood as such, must be a life lived with dignity, we have to think about life from a material point of view and, therefore, in a priority status to the so-called "social" rights, since social rights (economic, social and cultural) address issues as basic to life and human dignity as food, health, shelter, work, education and water. With this understanding, it becomes very clear that the materiality of human dignity rests on the so-called "existential minimum," the hard kernel of social rights, in such a way that social rights are genuine (true) fundamental human rights. Recognition of social rights cannot be, therefore, a mere listing of good intentions on the part of the state. Social rights are fundamental rights, which are for all men, can be exercised by everyone and are essential to life and human dignity. Nevertheless, that leaves much to be done so that these rights can be put on a par with civil and political rights insofar as legal status is concerned. What we are seeking in this study, then, is to shed light on the understanding that social rights are fundamental human rights, by contributing to a proposal to be offered for creating and demanding, politically and legally, certain social rights envisioned from another place, in a critical and humanistic way, as well as to help in some way so as to be able to overcome the social apathy of our times through an emancipatory and transformative process of rebellion.

The Preventative War Doctrine in International Law [microform] : the Iraqi Case
This thesis is devoted to the legal analysis of the facts and arguments advanced in favor and against the 2003 invasion of Iraq carried out mainly by the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The facts of the Iraqi case serve as a backdrop for the analysis and arguments developed in this thesis. Both on the Iraqi situation and on a broader context, this thesis analyzes the Preventive War Doctrine formulated by the Bush Administration in the National Security Strategy of the United States of America (2002) and the merits of this doctrine of prevention under international law and its implications for international peace and security. In studying the Iraqi case, this thesis analyzes the law on the use of force under the UN Charter and other relevant sources of international law, and proposes avenues for change in the law.
