While England Slept by Winston Churchill
Many books tell us about history but here is one book that caused history to take place. In the period 1932-1938 England was creeping closer to war. Many people perhaps a majority felt that England should rely on her natural defenses, including the English Channel that no army had successfully crossed since 1066. However, there was one almost lone voice crying in the wilderness that England should do more to prepare for war. That was the voice of Winston Churchill who was then only a lowly former member of the House of Commons. This book is a collection of speeches he made from 1932 to 1938. The common theme in these speeches that England had done little to prepare for war. He said that war with Germany was coming and England would not be ready for it. Churchill was especially critical of Neville Chamberlain and his famous quote of “Peace in Our Time” and his police of appeasement. It was when Churchill was proven right and the war actually started just as he had predicted that Neville Chamberlain resigned on 10 May 1940 and Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940–41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. A famous quote by Churchill is “History will be kind to me because I intend to write it.” Churchill was a powerful writer starting from his first book in 1898 “The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War”. It was his first published work of non-fiction. In June 1938, Winston Churchill published this book under the title “Arms and the Covenant”. It was then published in the US in September 1938 as While England Slept; a Survey of World Affairs, 1932-1938. It highlighted the United Kingdom's lack of military preparation to face the threat of Nazi Germany's expansion. In 1940, John F. Kennedy, then a student in his senior year at Harvard University, found he did not agree with the analysis by Churchill of the reasons for the war, so he wrote a book with almost the same title. Kennedy wrote it essentially as a critique and a rebuttal. In it, he in he examined the reasons for the UK's lack of preparation. He reached the same conclusion that some others since then have reached that it was not the “Policy of Appeasement” by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain that let to the war. It was an unfortunate choice to publish Why England Slept by Kennedy with almost exactly the same title as While England Slept by Churchill. John F. Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917. He was only 23 years old when he wrote his book. In 1940, Kennedy completed his thesis, "Appeasement in Munich", about British participation in the Munich Agreement. The thesis became the bestseller under the title Why England Slept. This has led to endless confusion as commentators have constantly gotten the two books mixed up.

Spandau: The Secret Diaries
This is one of the most amazing books every written. After being convicted in the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, the prisoners were not allowed to have writing paper, were not allowed to write their memoirs and were allowed only limited visits from their relatives. However, they were allowed to have toilet paper. So, on thousands of squares of toilet paper, Albert Speer wrote his diary in tiny letters so small that they could hardly be seen, which he was then able to pass to his relatives when they visited him. By the time Speer was released on September 30, 1966, twenty years later, there were more than twenty thousand pages of secret diaries just waiting to be edited and published, but it took him another ten years before he could bear to look at them. Albert Speer was a brilliant writer and the world should be forever grateful to him for leaving us this work, that addresses and attempts to answer questions the world will always be asking, including: 1. How was Adolph Hitler, an obvious madman, totally insane, able to attain and keep such great power? 2. Why did the German people not recognize what was happening and do something about it long before the destructive end? 3. Most importantly: Can this happen again? Could and will another Hitler arise, perhaps not in Germany again? Perhaps in the United States of America? What assurance do we have that a lunatic madman could not enter the White House and do much worse than Hitler ever did?

Deregulation of Network Industries: What's Next?

Although the airline, railroad, telecommunications, and electric power industries are at very different stages in adjusting to regulatory reform, each industry faces the same critical public policy question: Are policymakers taking appropriate steps to stimulate competition or are they turning back the clock by slowing the process of deregulation? This volume addresses that issue and identifies the next steps that policymakers should take to enhance public welfare in the provision of these services. Each chapter identifies the central policy issues that have arisen in each industry as it undergoes transformation to a deregulated environment. The authors reveal the flaws in the residual regulations and make the case for faster and more comprehensive deregulation. A concluding chapter identifies how interest groups continue to exert influence on regulatory agencies and on Congress, potentially undermining deregulation. The papers included here were initially presented in December 1999 at a conference sponsored and organized by the AEI–Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies.

What Came After

WHAT CAME AFTER is the Amazon bestseller written by Jon Clinch (THE THIEF OF AUSCHWITZ, FINN, KINGS OF THE EARTH) under his pen name, Sam Winston.

The apocalypse doesn't need plagues or zombies or bombs. All it needs is us.

Set in the very near future, WHAT CAME AFTER takes place in a too-credible third-world America that's been hijacked by corporations in the service of the wealthy. The Federal government has collapsed, health care is inaccessible, and private armies keep order. The upper class is concentrated in the cities, while the middle class—decimated by disease and poisoned by genetically engineered foods—labors on in a handful of desolate Empowerment Zones.

One man, Henry Weller, has had enough. With his five-year-old daughter going blind, he sets out across a ruined America to find her the health care she deserves. He'll have to face a strange and hostile world—from the financial districts of a walled New York to the armed camp of Washington, DC—but if he's successful, his daughter might see again.

And along the way, a revolution might get started.

WHAT CAME AFTER is shaped by issues on everyone's mind right now: poverty, corporate power, access to heath care, the outsourcing of government, parents' obligations to their children.

But at its core, it's a post-apocalyptic adventure in a desolate and treacherous world: THE WIZARD OF OZ meets HEART OF DARKNESS, at the end of the American dream.

From the critics:

"Sometimes I just keep hearing about a book on social media and I get so curious, I seek out the book myself. Case in point: Sam Winston's extraordinary WHAT CAME AFTER, an e-book about the end of the world. I started reading after dinner and didn't stop until I finished. This is no ordinary book. Character-driven, haunting, and gorgeously written, I think it's a classic"

— Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of PICTURES OF YOU.

Into The Silent World (What Came After) (Volume 2)
Sam Winston’s WHAT CAME AFTER was that rarest of achievements—a post-apocalyptic adventure that appealed equally to readers of both sci-fi and literary fiction. Despite an unknown author and no marketing budget, WHAT CAME AFTER quickly found an audience and became an Amazon bestseller in a matter of weeks. Now Winston is back—along with his unassuming hero, Henry Weller—in a big and sprawling sequel, INTO THE SILENT WORLD. Beginning just moments after WHAT CAME AFTER ends, INTO THE SILENT WORLD follows Weller and his family and his new band of followers as they escape Dr. Patel’s ruined bio station in the Northeastern Empowerment Zone and set out for the safety of Spartanburg. They’re not alone, though. And a virus that killed millions of Americans during the Great Dying is about to be pointed their way with the precision and cruelty that only Black Rose, the nation’s most powerful and secretive private army, can muster.
