"As the world transitions to a carbon neutral society to fight climate change ammonia looks to be a promising alternative to carbon-based fuel sources and for hydrogen storage. Since 1914 ammonia has been synthesized at the industrial scale by the Haber-Bosch process which produces 2 tons of carbon dioxide per ton of ammonia. With the discovery that water electrolysis can be used to produce green hydrogen, only the invention of a small-scale energy efficient ammonia synthesis process is needed to produce decentralized green ammonia. Non-thermal plasma catalytic synthesis of ammonia is theorized to have half the energy requirement when fully optimized but currently has only one-tenth the energy efficiency of the Haber-Bosch process. Innovation in reactor and catalyst design is essential to improve the energy efficiency of this alternative ammonia synthesis method. The focus of this thesis is to study the use of boron nitride nanotubes as a new catalyst support for the non-thermal plasma catalytic synthesis of ammonia. Boron nitride nanotubes share a lot of similarities to one of the most reactive supports in terms of ammonia production, alumina, and have unique interactions with ammonia. Non-thermal plasma pre-treatment was shown to clean the surface of the boron nitride nanotube buckypaper and enhance the surface stability in a N2-H2 non-thermal plasma environment. Boron nitride nanotube buckypapers were decorated with nickel and platinum nanoparticles by pulsed laser ablation as proof-of-concept supported transition metal catalysts. These catalysts were subjected to a N2-H2 non-thermal plasma environment to test their stability. A variety of characterization techniques were used to assess the produced catalysts. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy was able to measure the smallest loadings of nickel nanoparticles deposited on paper substrates. Scanning electron microscopy was able to identify metal nanoparticle coatings on the buckypaper. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy survey scans were effective at identifying changes in the surface chemistry of the samples. High-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the formation nickel nitride bonds on the surface of buckypaper decorated with nickel nanoparticles after N2-H2 non-thermal plasma exposure, a good indicator of reactivity. Overall, we conclude that boron nitride nanotubes show promise as a support material for non-thermal plasma catalytic ammonia synthesis"--

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are high aspect ratio, one-dimensional (1D), cylindrical nanocrystals with exemplary anisotropic optical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and magnetic properties. These behaviors are typically observed on the single-nanotube (NT) scale and often reveal a strong anisotropic response along the axis of the SWCNT. Researchers have exploited new chemical processing techniques to further enhance the physical response of SWCNTs by selectively controlling nanotube metallicity, length, diameter, and handedness. Despite the strong technological promise of these tailored SWCNTs, their incorporation into current state-of-the-art technological platforms, such as field-effect transistors, far-infrared detectors, broadband optical polarizers, and ultrafast laser modulators, has been greatly hindered by the inability to easily produce ensembles of aligned SWCNTs after solution-based chemical processing. To overcome this transition, a facile and reproducible method for fabricating aligned SWCNTs from a processed solution is necessary. In this dissertation, I will first briefly introduce low-dimensional carbon allotropes with a specific focus on SWCNTs and nanotube alignment techniques. In particular, I cover several chemical purification advancements that improve the purity of highly mixed SWCNT dispersions. Next, I discuss the methods utilized throughout this body of work and how they pertain to recent advances in aligning SWCNTs via slow vacuum filtration (SVF). Specifically, I describe the technological development of automating and refining the SVF process via machine vision, as well as the addition of new capabilities. For instance, by controlling the filtration flow rate, flattening the meniscus, and modifying the filter membrane surface, I could repeatably produce globally aligned SWCNT films with high, two-dimensional nematic ordering ($\mstwod > 0.9$). Additionally, I propose a hypothesis for the alignment mechanism and show, via alterations to the ionic strength of the solution, that electrostatic interactions are necessary for the emergence of a nematic phase. The observations made here, as well as the hypothesized alignment mechanism, suggest a pathway forward for not only aligning solution-dispersed SWCNTs but also a wide variety of 1D nanoparticles.

To minimize membrane fouling many water treatment plants pre-treat water prior to microfiltration (MF) or ultrafiltration (UF). Coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation is a common form of pre-treatment, but little research has been conducted on floatation as a part of the pre-treatment. The objective of this thesis is to compare pre-treatment with floatation and with sedimentation for Ottawa River water, a typical Northern Canadian water with a high natural organic matter (NOM) content and a large hydrophobic (HPO) NOM fraction. Fouling tests consisted of multiple filtration/backwashing cycles performed by an automated bench-scale UF hollow fiber membrane system. Test were conducted with Ottawa River water (ORW) and ORW subjected to three different types of pre-treatment conducted at closely-located full-scale water treatment plants, including one using floatation. Both Alum pre-treatments resulted in decreases in NOM (63% and 68% TOC) and HPO NOM (56% and 68%TOC) which helped to reduce fouling. However, the remaining NOM and HPO NOM still caused significant hydraulically and chemical irreversible fouling. The water pre-treated with floatation produced the least severe hydraulically irreversible fouling for all experiments while Raw ORW produced the highest. During the early stages of membrane filtration (~10 hours), the TMP sharply increases which may imply that adsorption is dominant. Statistical analysis during the initial stages of filtration showed that the HPO fraction of NOM was linked to hydraulically irreversible fouling, which may be attributed to adsorption. Raw ORW also had the highest hydraulically reversible fouling while all pre-treatments were able to reduce this type of fouling. Statistical analysis suggested that the transphilic (TPI) fraction of NOM and particulate organic carbon (POC) were responsible for hydraulically reversible fouling during subcritical flux experiments, which may be attributed to cake formation on the membrane surface. It was found that for all waters and experiments, hydraulically irreversible fouling was greater than hydraulically reversible fouling. This may be because of the high HPO concentrations in the ORW. Hydraulically reversible fouling and backwash efficiencies were found to fluctuate with time. It is hypothesised that the cake formation adheres to the membrane surface and is not fully removed until enough backwash pressure has developed. Further investigation into alternative cleaning procedures is required as the NaOH cleaning was not very effective for some of the pre-treated waters.
