Man's Place in Nature, and Other Essays

Man's Place in Nature, and Other Essays
In "Man's Place in Nature, and Other Essays," Thomas Henry Huxley intricately examines humanity's biological and evolutionary significance through a series of compelling essays. Huxley employs a clear, yet sophisticated style, balancing scientific rigor with engaging prose that appeals to both researchers and lay readers. The essays situate human existence within the broader context of natural history and evolution, incorporating comparative anatomy and paleontology to elucidate our relationships with other species. This work is significant not only for its scientific insights but also for its role in the cultural debates surrounding Darwinism in the late 19th century, offering a critical perspective on the implications of evolution for human identity and morality. Huxley, known as 'Darwin's Bulldog' for his staunch advocacy of evolutionary theory, drew upon his extensive background in biology to craft this impactful work. His experiences as a naturalist, coupled with his involvement in educational reform and public discourse on science, significantly influenced his views on human evolution and its philosophical ramifications. Huxley's commitment to empirical evidence and rational thought reflects the intellectual fervor of his era, as he sought to bridge the gap between science and societal understanding. I highly recommend "Man's Place in Nature, and Other Essays" for anyone interested in the intersection of science, philosophy, and human thought. Huxley's thought-provoking arguments not only illuminate our origins but also challenge readers to contemplate our role in the natural world. This book promises to enrich your understanding of humanity's place in the tapestry of life and is an essential read for both current and future discussions on evolution.

Communist Party Membership in the U.S.S.R.
In this comprehensive and latest statistical profile of the membership of the Communist Party during the first half-century of the Soviet regime, Professor Rigby analyzes the history of party recruitment and composition. Since the party makes vital contributions to the performance of several basic tasks within the Soviet political system, the author interprets his data mainly in functional terms. He identifies and evaluates the influence of these functional considerations on recruitment policies and on the changing patterns of membership, and determines the priorities assigned to different functions under changing circumstances. T.H. Rigby is Professor of Political Science, Research School of Social Science, Australian National University. Studies of the Russian Institute, Columbia University. Originally published in 1968. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated Evolution and Ethics and Other Essays by Thomas Henry Huxley Thomas Henry Huxley was an English biologist (comparative anatomist), known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's famous debate in 1860 with Samuel Wilberforce was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution and in his own career. Huxley had been planning to leave Oxford on the previous day, but, after an encounter with Robert Chambers, the author of Vestiges, he changed his mind and decided to join the debate. Wilberforce was coached by Richard Owen, against whom Huxley also debated about whether humans were closely related to apes. Huxley was slow to accept some of Darwin's ideas, such as gradualism, and was undecided about natural selection, but despite this he was wholehearted in his public support of Darwin. Instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain, he fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition. Originally coining the term in 1869, Huxley elaborated on 'agnosticism' in 1889 to frame the nature of claims in terms of what is knowable and what is not. Huxley states, "Agnosticism, in fact, is not a creed, but a method, the essence of which lies in the rigorus [sic] application of a single principle... the fundamental axiom of modern science... In matters of the intellect, follow your reason as far as it will take you, without regard to any other consideration... In matters of the intellect, do not pretend that conclusions are certain which are not demonstrated or demonstrable.". Use of that term has continued to the present day.

Man's Place in Nature, 1863
Huxley was one of the first adherents to Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection and advanced its acceptance by scientists and the public. Man's Place in Nature was explicitly directed against Richard Owen, who had claimed that there were distinct differences between human brains and those of apes. Huxley demonstrated that ape and human brains were fundamentally similar in every anatomical detail, thus applying evolution to the human race.

The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley

The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley
Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895) was one of the intellectual giants of Victorian England. A surgeon by training, he became the principal exponent of Darwinism and popularizer of "scientific naturalism." Huxley was a prolific essayist, and his writings put him at the center of intellectual debate in England during the later half of the nineteenth century. The Major Prose of Thomas Henry Huxley fills a very real and pressing chasm in history of science books, bringing together almost all of Huxley's major nontechnical prose, including Man's Place in Nature and both "Evolution in Ethics" and its "Prolegomena."
