His entire village wiped out. His being placed in leg irons, hands tied behind his back and a yoke of iron being placed around his neck. He sees his only brother gunned down by a long stick that shoots out fire and smoke and is being used by the strangers. His brother's blood gushing out from his neck. He is taken to a place far away from his home and placed in a cage like a wild animal along with others from his village and other villages as well.He sees piles of his people's bodies piled up and set on fire, while he suddenly finds his father but it is too late for him. He is seen hanging from a tree, his stomach cut wide open and all of his insides are hanging out towards the ground.This is being seen by this fifteen-year-old boy. Can you feel his fear? He thinks he is dreaming but finds out that this is reality.

Nearly one in ten Americans has type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a major source of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Most patients with diabetes are treated with medicines which may have adverse side effects. The prevalence of this disease necessitates the addition of new, safer compounds to the anti-diabetic arsenal. The recently reported Fatty Acid esters of Hydroxy Fatty Acids (FAHFAs) included eight Palmitic Acid esters of Hydroxy Stearic Acid (PAHSA) regioisomers, which may provide a new avenue for treatment of T2DM. In particular, 5- and 9-PAHSA increased insulin secretion, improved blood sugar, and decreased adipose tissue inflammation in diabetic mice. While this activity is encouraging, much remains unknown about PAHSAs, including the influence of chemical connectivity on their activity. Furthermore, the molecular targets of PAHSAs have not been fully elucidated. Until these questions are answered, there can be no hope of treating T2DM with an optimized PAHSA analog, nor means to rationally upregulate de novo PAHSA synthesis. This resulted in a scalable total synthesis of racemic 5- and 9-PAHSA, both enantiomers of 9-PAHSA, and preparation of a 30 membered library of PAHSA analogs to probe structure activity relationships. Furthermore, 6 chemical biology probes have been prepared to determine in an unbiased manner the molecular targets of PAHSAs and their metabolism.

Understanding dominant reaction channels for important gas-phase species in fluorocarbon plasmas is crucial to the ability to control surface evolution and morphology. In order to accomplish this goal a modified GEC reference ICP reactor is used in tandem with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to measure the densities of stable species. Integrated absorption cross-sections are presented for all fundamental bands in the 650 cm -1 to 2000 cm -1 region for C 3 F 6 , C 4 F 8 , C 3 F 8 , C 2 F 6 , C 2 F 4 , and CF 4 . The results show that although the absorption profile changes significantly, the integrated absorption cross-sections, with the exception of CF 4 , do not change significantly as gas temperature increases from 25°C to 200°C. However, the internal temperature of the absorbing species can be estimated from the rotational band maximum in most cases. Species densities obtained with the aforementioned cross-sections are used with a novel analysis technique to quantify gain and loss rates as functions of residence time, pressure, and deposited power. CF 4 , C 2 F 6 , C 3 F 8 , and C 4 F 10 , share related production channels, which increase in magnitude as the plasma pressure, deposited power, or surface temperature are raised. CF 2 is primarily produced through a combination of surface production (the magnitude also increases with temperature) and electron impact dissociation of C 2 F 4 , while it is predominantly lost in the large reactor to gas-phase addition to form C 2 F 4 . Time-resolved FTIR results are used to measure a cross-section of 1.8x10 -14 cm 3 /s for the reaction between CF 2 radicals creating C 2 F 4 . Finally, C 2 F 4 originates through the electron impact dissociation of c- C 4 F 8 . The loss process for C 2 F 4 is undetermined, but the results indicate that it could occur on reactor surfaces. Neither the density of fluorine nor the ion flux to the chuck surface changes substantially with wall temperature. We show that increases in the deposition rate in a heated chamber are due to an increase in the fluxes of depositing neutral species. Furthermore, the sticking coefficient for these species does not change significantly as a function of surface temperature. Instead, surface temperature elevates the yield of etchant species, which terminate broken bonds to increase the desorption rates of stable species.

This in-depth study of a Black congregation in Charleston, South Carolina provides a window into the tremendously important yet still largely overlooked world of African American religion as the faith is lived by ordinary believers. For decades, scholars have been preoccupied with the relation between Black Christianity, civil rights, and social activism. Every Time I Feel the Spirit is about black religion as religion. It focuses on the everyday experience of religion in the church, congregants' relationships with God, and the role that God and Satan play in congregants' lives—not only as objects of belief but as actual agents. It explores the concepts of religious experience and religious ritual, while emphasizing the attributions that people make to the operation of spiritual forces and beings in their lives. Through interviews and field work, Nelson uncovers what religious people themselves see as important about their faith while extending and refining sociological understandings of religious ritual and religious experience.
