Fault Lines

release date: May 31, 2026
Fault Lines
The essays in this collection trace how trust forms, falters, and reforms under pressure. They take place in wild, exposed settings: the Mojave Desert, where you can lose your sense of direction in broad daylight; the Tetons, where a rope and a partner's judgment can be the only things between you and a long fall; and the fenced edges of the world's largest nuclear weapons site, where what appears orderly and controlled conceals its own forms of danger. One false step, one missed marker, and managed risk falters and turns dangerous, revealing the unexpected. Author Timothy Smith has a scientist's ability to observe, and a poet's ear for controlled language. These essays strip away anything unnecessary to reveal startling metaphoric layers of bedrock. "Rupture is not the exception," Smith writes, "it's the rule." Entering Smith's world reveals a life shaped by risk-taking that is gripping, inspiring, and occasionally uncomfortable. Yet readers will trust his instincts and relish his insights. These exciting and profound essays beautifully link adventure and reflection, despair and hope, humor and gravity. It's a compelling ride - one grounded in self-examination as much as consequence. These essays mine far below the surface, inviting the reader to reassess their own past experiments in risk and safety, find something new, and hold it up to the light.

Revivalism and Social Reform

release date: May 19, 2020
Revivalism and Social Reform
"This volume is offered as a ''new slant on the origins of the social gospel,'' and so it is. Basing his study primarily on material gathered from newspapers, letters and religious and secular weeklies of the period, [Dr. Smith] contends that the heart of the social gospel was present in strong and explicit from in the undertakings of the revivalist of the years 1840-1855. The evangelists of this period played a vital role in preparing the way for the attack on slavery, poverty and greed. This is a real contribution to American religious history, and both general readers and scholars will find it of great interest."—Kirkus Review "So many historians have tracked the trail of the American revivalists that it is difficult for anyone to discover something new about that trail. Timothy Smith claimed to discover that they were more oriented towards social reform than their critics saw them to be. He backed up, with solid documentation, his claim that they were, in their own way, fathers of the Social Gospel. His book represented one of those rare moments in the study of American church history: the development of an original thesis, one worthy of the argument which it has during the past decade inspired and survived."—Martin E. Escape from the Dark Side

release date: Oct 17, 2019
Escape from the Dark Side
This book is a Memoir, a detailed account of my life, growing up in one of Detroit''s most notorious areas - The Brewster Projects - in the ''60''s and ''70''s. The Brewster-Douglas Housing Projects were the largest residential housing project owned by the City of Detroit, located in the Brush Park section on the Eastside of Detroit, Michigan. The 1960''s and 1970''s were deemed the era of the beginning of Motown Records, original music flowing from the halls of Barry Gordy''s profound vision of creating musical geniuses and superstars. It was also the era when new types of drugs hit the hallowed streets of Detroit, and illegal sexual activities littered every corner in this area on the Eastside of Detroit. Life was fast! Life was hard! I literally raised myself, because it was like "Every man for himself" in my house. With a mentally unstable mother, the love I learned was not quite right. Relationships were based on my lack of understanding what real love was. Also, a less than loving grandmother made my life downright difficult. I was desparate. In and out of juvenile detention centers, in and out of prison, and ultimately having to reside at one rehabilitation center after another because of my drug addictions. It was evident that I''d end up like many of my constituents...in jail or rehab for life or dead. Thankfully, neither happened. I was released from my jail sentence and my stint in rehab. I''m here now to tell my story - Escape From The Dark Side...One Addicts Struggle.

Bvr/Ahla Guide to Healthcare Industry Compensation and Valuation

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Bvr/Ahla Guide to Healthcare Industry Compensation and Valuation
The Guide offers the first comprehensive body of knowledge for the emerging appraisal discipline of compensation valuation (CV) in the healthcare industry. It includes 42 chapters and five practice aides, presenting a systematic treatment of both the theory and practice of CV. This is a must-have text for appraisers, consultants, attorneys, and industry participants who deal with physician compensation arrangements in healthcare. Written by various subject-matter experts and thought leaders, this new guide is expected to become the industry's touchstone for the appraisal discipline of CV. The guide is organized into five sections: Introduction to Healthcare Compensation and Valuation: This section provides an overview and analysis of CV practice from the perspective of the appraisal profession and the valuation body of knowledge. It identifies the unique aspects of the new discipline, while developing working definitions for fair market value (FMV) and the three approaches to value adapted specifically for CV. The question of appraisal methodology in CV is evaluated in light of the key discipline and industry characteristics. One chapter is devoted solely to outlining the elements of a CV appraisal report. Regulatory Matters in Compensation Valuation This comprehensive section provides the first in-depth reconciliation of FMV as defined under healthcare regulations with the FMV as conceptualized in the valuation discipline. Two chapters offer groundbreaking discussions on the determination of commercial reasonableness, along with a practice aid for analyzing the commercial reasonableness of a compensation arrangement. Also included is a chapter focused on reasonable compensation for tax purposes. A primer chapter on healthcare regulations affecting valuation, written in nontechnical language and general in scope, opens the section. Topics in the Economics and Analysis of Physician Services Chapters in this section focus on specialized topics related to physician services, such as reimbursement, quality, benchmarking, and calculating physician productivity. A systematic introduction to physician services and the economics of physician practices is also included. Appraising Compensation Arrangements Comprehensive overview chapters in this section address the appraisal of major types of compensation arrangements. Each chapter addresses the market forces and typical contractual terms found in a given type of arrangement, along with an overview of the critical issues involved in its appraisal. Some arrangements are covered in separate chapters that provide an in-depth analysis of various valuation methods and techniques used in CV practice. Advanced Issues and Specialized Topics in Healthcare Compensation Valuation Research studies offer dramatic insight into advanced issues and specialized topics in CV, including three chapters on compensation per wRVU, and chapters covering the relationship of productivity and compensation and the relationships between reimbursement and compensation across markets. Additionally, two chapters address the use of survey data in CV.

The Danger of Raising Nice Kids

release date: Sep 20, 2009
The Danger of Raising Nice Kids
Nice is not enough. We are raising a generation of "nice" kids. Nice kids are well behaved and look good on the outside, but they often lack courageous character inside. Offering practical wisdom gleaned from his experience as a parent and family coach, Tim Smith helps you move your kids from simply polite to truly compassionate. He targets nine key qualities children need but often lack and shows you how to build them into your children by modeling core values and biblical practices. Your kids can be--and indeed, are meant to be--kingdom builders who help bring God''s light and life to others through their decisions and influence. "Being nice won''t help them stand apart," Tim says. "We need to strategically train our children to engage and challenge the popular views of our culture." Here is a clear, down-to-earth resource that will help you do just that. But be prepared for change--in you, in your kids and in the world.
