As he struggled to adapt to that disability, he realized that he had experienced several other losses during what were then the middle years of his life, and it dawned on him that gradually he began to view those losses not only as tragedies, as "bad things that happen to good people," but also as profound opportunities to grow up in the way he relates to the world as it is, to the people in his life and to God. In 2009, I realized that I had forty days of unscheduled time in Thailand between the seventh mission trip I had helped lead in the "Land of Smiles" and an international conference in Pattaya on the Gulf of Thailand. In a study designed to provide an improved scientific basis for assessing possible health effects from inhaling depleted uranium (DU) aerosols, a series of DU penetrators was fired at an Abrams tank and a Bradley fighting vehicle. A robust sampling system was designed to collect aerosols in this difficult environment and continuously monitor the sampler flow rates. Aerosols collected were analyzed for uranium concentration and particle size distribution as a function of time. They were also analyzed for uranium oxide phases, particle morphology, and dissolution in vitro. The resulting data provide input useful in human health risk assessments.
