Who decides how, when, and where Americans fall in love and get married? This thesis is the first global history of an ubiquitous product, the bentwood chair, one of the most common furnishing items in 19th-century Australia. It identifies two Canadian companies that were large-scale manufacturers of chairs and other products, and traces their local production and global distribution in an integrated history of design, trade, and consumption. It posits that trade between Canada and Australia began earlier and was much larger than current accounts suggest. The thesis contributes to a new understanding of comparative economic development and nascent 19th-century industries and occupations. It analyses a wide range of sources including government reports, trade catalogues, studio and vernacular photography, business publications, family archives, shipping records, and newspaper articles and advertising. It tests the generalisation of exclusive Austrian and American ownership of the massive global trade in bentwood chairs. In doing so, it challenges the perception of a primarily English influence in British Empire trade and consumption.

This case study of members of Iraq Veterans Against the War explores how identity, institutional context and affiliation, emotions, and the notion of healing come together in the experience of activism. Using an interpretive approach, I employ in-depth interviews and observation derived primarily from one local chapter, and visual and textual analysis of newspaper articles, organization documents, and video footage of IVAW actions including Operation First Casualty and the 2012 Medal Return, to better understand the ways in which identification with the institution these activists simultaneously attempt to undermine, the military, shapes their identity and subsequent activism in terms of the actions, strategies and tactics they engage in. I also explore the ways in which their experiences in war and the military have shaped their activism in terms of emotions and the notion of healing. This study finds that identifying as anti-war veterans and deploying that identity in activism enables an insider/outsider status that informs their critique and establishes legitimacy and political standing, which is evident in their public activism. I also find that within this context an emotion culture is created that enables the possibility for healing, catharsis, and the development of a politicized understanding of the mental and physical consequences of war that is intended to empower and mobilize veterans into anti-war activism.

The Artist's Hand celebrates two complementary and necessary aspects of the art world, the hand of the artist and the role of art institutions, through the Washington Art Consortium's collection of American prints and drawings. Canada's furniture history includes hitherto unrecognized work of international significance in modern design. In this richly illustrated study, Virginia Wright brings such accomplishments to the fore, employing archival photographs and original documentation to trace the development of professional furniture design, design education, and design advocacy in Canada from 1920 to 1970.Chief among the milestones were the production in Ontario in the mid-1920s of moulded plywood seating for assembly halls, and the world's first moulded plastic furniture produced in prototype by the National Research Council in 1946 - three years before the more famous designs by Charles Eames in the United States. Within a narrative framework, Wright charts the development of modern design from its first appearance in an Eaton's department store, with pieces brought from the Paris Exposition of 1925, through its stealthy entry into Canadian homes, to its establishment as a dominant style. She shows how the introduction of modern industrial materials such as steel tube, rubber, and plywood into the production of commercial and institutional furnishings, and their incorporation into modern decor, reached a wide public through exhibitions and the media. Wright also reveals the relative neglect of this facet of Canada's art history by its museums and galleries, which, after featuring new furniture made in Canada, failed to acquire any for their own permanent exhibitions or study collections. The first account of Canada's innovative furniture design and fabrication of the period, Modern Furniture in Canada, 1920 to 1970 opens the door to a whole new field of study.

This report documents the results of an investigation into the feasibility of developing a simulator for the training of bus operators. Current transit training programs were examined, and training needs identified with the assistance of an advisory committee from the transit industry. Features required of a driving simulator to meet those training needs were identified, and the cost of implementing and operating such a simulator were assessed. Due to the high costs of simulators with the required features, it appears that no cost benefit would accrue with the use of such a simulator. No training time savings or safety benefits could be documented to justify the use of a driving simulator for bus operator training.
