He was born in Methuen, Massachusetts, and moved to Rockland, Maine in 1852, later moving to Hallowell, Maine. He married Eunice Fox in 1848 and after her death, married her sister Hannah C. Fox. He was active in local and state politics, and was elected governor of the state in 1885. He died while holding that office. Ancestry, descendants and relatives lived chiefly in Massachusetts and Maine. Includes many tributes from individuals and members of the press.
