Every human being is a self, and self-likeness is the expression of that self. Self-likeness, the expression of the self, is not the expression of Christ. The expression of Christ comes only out of the life of Christ. In this booklet compiled from Life-study of Romans, Witness Lee fellowships concerning our need to be saved in the life of Christ from self-likeness and be conformed to the image of the Son of God.

“Today the Lord intends to turn the age; He desires to turn to the age of the Spirit. I have a deep conviction that the Lord’s way hereafter is altogether in the Spirit.” We may love and fear the Lord, desire a godly living that pleases Him, and want to live according to the teaching of the Bible, being well-behaved in all things. Such a living is similar to the teachings of Confucius, but it is far from the central point revealed in the Scriptures. The central point of the Bible shows that the Lord is the life-giving Spirit. He is leading us to turn from things outside of the Spirit to the Spirit Himself, from rituals to the Spirit, from knowledge to the Spirit, and from the letter of the Bible to the Spirit. He has enlivened and regenerated our human spirit, and now He dwells in us to be our life and everything. This is the central point of the Bible that the Lord wants to recover today.

In this booklet taken from Life-study of Luke, Witness Lee presents the Lord Jesus’ teaching about salvation and reward in Luke 14. Verses 15-24 show us that salvation is free; we simply need to answer God’s invitation and receive what He offers us, and we will be saved. However, after we are saved, we need to enter into the coming kingdom to receive a reward. This is seen in verses 25-35. “To be saved by grace is one thing, and to be rewarded according to our following of the Lord is another thing.”

In this booklet taken from Life-study of Luke, Witness Lee considers Luke 8:1-21. “In 8:1-21 three matters are covered: the Man-Savior being ministered to by women (vv. 1-3), the Man-Savior teaching with parables (vv. 4-18), and the Man-Savior identifying His real relatives (vv. 19-21). If we consider 7:36—8:21 as a unit, we shall see that as those who have had their sins forgiven, we should follow the Lord, minister to Him, grow in life, and shine as lamps. Eventually, as such ones, we become the genuine relatives of the Man-Savior.”

In leading the young people, there are two indispensable aspects: spiritual knowledge and spiritual life. The spiritual content we impart into our young people must be related to both aspects, and we should not lean too much toward one or the other; we must be balanced. According to God’s law in the universe, everything is balanced. Thus, in our service with the young brothers and sisters, we should keep the principle of being balanced; we should give the young people knowledge and life in such a way that these aspects interact with each other.

In order to participate in the church service, we need to see that all the believers are priests who serve God and minister Him into man. Every genuine believer in Christ has received a unique, particular gift that no one else possesses (1 Pet. 4:10), and we have all received a certain measure of the grace of God. To be a good steward, we must be those who impart such grace to one another by the gift we have received. In other words, we need to serve one another with the grace that we have received of God. We should minister our gift to one another according to the principle of mutuality (Heb. 10:24-25). There are five basic factors that enable us to serve as good stewards of the varied grace of God by functioning in the church meetings: being built up with others, offering up a sacrifice of praise to God, doing good and sharing with others, girding ourselves with humility toward one another, and submitting to one another. “If the Lord grants us grace to put these five matters into practice, we will be living, functioning members of the Body of Christ. This will uplift our spirit, enrich our inner being, and cause us to function in the meetings so that we may dispense the varied grace of God to one another.”

Christ and the cross are the center and the reality of the Bible. In their writing, all the apostles emphasized Christ and the cross, and when we know this matter, we will truly appreciate the preciousness of the Bible. “In order for us to grow in life, to see the spiritual things and the spiritual way, and to be proper Christians, we must know Christ and the cross. A person who does not know Christ and the cross cannot do a spiritual work or service that satisfies God’s heart. In order to grow spiritually or do a spiritual work, such as preaching the gospel or administrating the church, we must know Christ and the cross.”

The subject of the book of Ephesians is the church. There are seven aspects of the church revealed in Ephesians. The church is the Body, the new man, the kingdom, the family, the dwelling place, the bride, and the warrior. If we put together all these seven aspects of the church, we see a wonderful picture of the church as the Body to express Christ, as the new man taking Christ as the person, as the kingdom with rights and responsibilities, as the family with life and enjoyment, as God’s dwelling place for God to live in, as the bride for Christ’s satisfaction, and as the warrior for fighting the battle and defeating the enemy so that God can accomplish his eternal purpose. This is the church. The Life-study of Ephesians also gives a clear view of the contents of the book of Ephesians. In chapter one of Ephesians we have the blessings: God’s selection, predestination, sonship, holiness, redemption, sealing, pledging, and much more. Then we shall see the prayer of the Apostle for a spirit of wisdom and revelation to know the hope of God’s calling, to see the glory of God’s inheritance among His saints, and to realize the greatness of the power that has been wrought in Christ to produce the Body. Then in chapter two, we see the production of the church, the nature of the church, the vision of the church, the building of the church, and the function of the church. In chapter three, we see the revelation of the mystery and the ministry of the stewardship concerning the church. Following this, we see Paul’s prayer for the strengthening of our inner man, so that Christ may make His home in our heart, that we might be filled with all the fullness of God. This causes us to have the practical experience of Christ. Then, as revealed in the last three chapters, we shall know how to walk on earth, to bear responsibility, and to fight the battle for God’s purpose. This is the content of the book of Ephesians.

Luke’s Gospel reveals God among men in His saving grace given to fallen mankind. In the Life-study of Luke, Witness Lee shows that the purpose of Luke’s Gospel is to present the Savior as a genuine, normal, and perfect man. It gives a complete genealogy of the man Jesus, from His parents back to Adam, the first generation of mankind, and shows that He is a genuine descendant of man—a son of man. Witness Lee demonstrates that Luke’s record of the life of this man impresses us with the completeness and perfection of His humanity. Hence, his Gospel stresses the Lord as the Man-Savior. It is the Gospel written to mankind in general, and it announces the good news to all people. It is a Gospel to all sinners, both Jewish and Gentile. Since it is such, the sequence of its record is according to morality, not according to historical events.

In John 3:30, John the Baptizer spoke concerning the Lord Jesus: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” What do these words mean? Do they apply to us today? In this booklet taken from Life-study of John, Witness Lee considers the answer to these questions, revealing not only what it means for us to decrease but also how we can become the increase of Christ.

The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1965, volume 1, contains messages and fellowship given by Brother Witness Lee primarily from January through July 1965. A portion of this volume contains messages given in December 1963 and in March 1966. During the period from January through July, 1965, Brother Lee traveled extensively. In mid-February through mid-March he visited cities in Texas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio. From the middle to the end of April he visited Mount Vernon, Missouri, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the end of May he traveled to South Carolina and Florida and then went on to Brazil, Peru, and Panama before returning to Los Angeles at the end of June. He also visited Sacramento, California, in mid-July and may have visited the Pacific Northwest. Regrettably, there is no record of his speaking in any of these places. At the end of July he held a weekend conference in San Francisco. The contents of this volume are divided into eleven sections, as follows: 1. Four messages given in Los Angeles, California, from January 12 through May 25. These messages are included in this volume under the title Exercising Our Gifts to Build Up the Body. 2. Fourteen messages given in Los Angeles, California, the first nine of which were given from January 23 through May 29, and the remaining five of which were given on March 15 through 24, 1966. These messages were previously published under the title The Vision, Practice, and Building Up of the Church as the Body of Christ. 3. Fourteen messages given in Los Angeles, California, from January 31 through May 18, 1965. These messages have been previously published under the title Preaching the Gospel in the Way of Life. The published book contained thirteen chapters. However, during research for The Collected Works, an additional message was discovered. This message is included in this volume as the first chapter. 4. Four messages given in Los Angeles, California, on April 9 through 11. These messages have been previously published under the title The Experience of Christ in Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians. 5. Six messages given in Los Angeles, California, from January 15 through April 2. These messages are included in this volume under the title Study on Hebrews. 6. Three messages given in Los Angeles, California, on May 7 through 21. These messages are published in this volume under the title Notes on 1 Timothy. 7. Two messages given in Los Angeles, California, on July 2 and 9. These messages are included in this volume under the title Study on Titus. 8. Four messages given in San Francisco, California, on July 23 through 25. One of the messages was spoken in Chinese and translated simultaneously into English. The English translation was edited for inclusion in this section. The messages given in this conference are included in this volume under the title Summer Conference in San Francisco. 9. One message that first appeared as an article in volume 3, number 1 of The Stream magazine in May 1965. The date and place of the original spoken message are uncertain. This message was previously published under the title The Baptism in the Holy Spirit. 10. One message that was first published as an article in volume 4, number 2 of The Stream magazine in May 1966. There is some evidence that it was spoken in Los Angeles, California, in the summer of 1965. The original article was later revised and published as a booklet entitled The Vision of the Church in 1968. This booklet is included in this volume under the same title. 11. Two messages given in Los Angeles, California, on December 24 and 26, 1963. The two messages were published in 1994 as chapters 4 and 6 of The Life and Way for the Practice of the Church Life, which is included in The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1963, volume 4. They first appeared in May 1965 in a slightly different form as a two-part article entitled The All-inclusive Spirit of Christ in volume 3, number 1 of The Stream magazine. The original article was later revised and printed as a booklet under the same title in 1969. This booklet, including the four diagrams that do not appear elsewhere, is included in this volume under the same title.

This book covers four crucial matters found in 1 Corinthians: enjoying Christ practically as the life-giving Spirit to be one spirit with Him; eating and drinking Christ in 1 Corinthians; the enjoyment of the riches of Christ issuing in the corporate Christ, the Body-Christ; and coming back to the proper ground of oneness and fellowshipping to enjoy the Body-Christ.

[This book] contains fourteen messages that show us that the way for a Christian to mature in life is by allowing God to build Himself into him, by paying the price before God, by being watchful and ready, by turning to the spirit, and by giving the ground to the Lord.

The New Testament tells us that as saved ones we have been regenerated in our spirit and that from the time we were saved, God has been edifying and building up our spirit. Ephesians 2:22 clearly reveals that our spirit is God''s dwelling place in us. Hence, to build up our spirit, the individual spirit, is to build up God''s dwelling place, God''s temple. On the other hand, the church is also God''s house and God''s temple. But how do we build up the church? It is through all the saved ones encouraging one another and functioning in mutuality according to their fellowship with the Lord and the experiences of life they have had with the Lord in their spirit. The Body of Christ is built up through the spiritual development of all the members.

The church should help the brothers and sisters in the way of visiting people to preach the gospel to save sinners, nourishing and taking care of the new believers, and teaching and perfecting them so that all can prophesy and speak for the Lord. When the church does this, sinners will be saved, believers will grow, saints will be perfected, and all will prophesy one by one. Then the church will be flourishing and the testimony will be strong.
