Essays (8 Book Series)
From Book 1: I started out with a craving. I'd tell people it was adventure I was after, even though I wasn't exactly sure what that meant. It took some searching before I really understood what my life was missing.

Three adventures ensued. Adventures of romance, inspiration, and illumination.

This essay takes you with me on my voyage. It's also a challenge—from me to you—to take a similar daring leap.

And see what happens.

[FYI: This essay is a short work and is about 40 pages when printed in book form. It is the first in J Washburn's ESSAYS series.]

Dreaming of Retiring to the Costa Blanca? (3 Book Series)
From Book 1: Before you read on, a note regarding Brexit. The results are out, so at the moment neither I nor anybody else has a clear idea what it will mean to us ex-pats. But one thing may surprise you! Nobody that I know in the UK expat community living here has any intention of moving back to the UK! Things may be uncertain at the moment, but the general attitude is that it's probably just as uncertain in the UK. The Valencian president has already gone on record as saying that he is desperate to keep the expat community, and will do whatever he can to support us. Nice man, very nice man!
In any event, it's now beginning to look like the worst scenario is not going to happen. Watching things carefully, my own opinion is that changes are likely to settle down to two areas; I think it's likely that the British Government will discontinue to support state healthcare here in Spain, but possibly only for those who move here after the date for the UK leaving the EU is reached. Don't despair, you can get state health care here in Spain but it does have to be paid for each month. Also, I think it is possible that UK state pensions will be frozen, as is the case in the Commonwealth countries. As for the rest? Who knows! BUT. As and when the situation becomes fully clear, I WILL update this guide, and I WILL ensure that Amazon sends you the updated version at no cost.

And as for us? Will we be returning to the UK? Not unless you put us in a crate, nail it down and shove it on a flight back....

We moved to the lovely Costa Blanca North around ten years ago, and I can honestly say that we have had no regrets at all in leaving grey, cold, crowded England. Life here is as good as it gets; the weather is kind, the people lovely, the food and drink excellent, the whole lifestyle an object lesson in how life should be lived. Sounds wonderful? Take my word for it, it is!

Before we moved, I thought I had done as much research as it was possible to do. I thought I had all the answers at my fingertips; and bear in mind I used to work for the British Library, so if I couldn´t be confident that I had done my research well and thoroughly, who could? I read numerous “how to” guides, haunted the internet, made sure I kept up with all the Costa Blanca local papers on line. It was only after we had made the move, alas, that I realised that I had neglected the one, vital thing that all expats don´t understand, and it´s a real Catch-22 situation. You see, until you move, until you get over here and start settling in, you suddenly realise that whilst all that research is lovely, you still don´t have the key to living here.

Why? Simply because you don´t know what the right questions are to ask! You really do have to live here to know how true this simple fact is. The manuals and the internet articles are a help, of course, but they are far less than half the story.

Until you move here, you have no real idea of how different things are done in Spain. Everything from buying your house, to everyday living is not as is done in the UK! But you can get there, you just need to know what to ask, who to ask, and how to ask it! And the answers are here. Basically, this is a Guide to questions I wish I had known about 8 years ago, when we moved over. I do not - not for one second! - regret making the move, but Oh! - how I wish I had had someone to tell me these secrets at the time.

In any event, here it is, and I look forward to raising a glass of something nice to you when you arrive in the lovely Costa Blanca.

Bienvenidos a Costa Blanca!
