Q & A with Jonathan Dunsky

Q: The Dead Sister is a murder mystery novel set in Israel, in 1949. What led you to set the book in that place, at that time?

JD: I knew I wanted to write a novel set in my country, Israel. As the idea for the main character, holocaust survivor and private investigator Adam Lapid, came to me, it was clear the book could only take place in the early days of the State of Israel.

Q: What sort of research did you do before writing The Dead Sister?

JD: I consulted a variety of websites that chronicle the early days of the State of Israel and perused a large number of newspapers from the period in which the novel takes place. Israel had changed a lot over the years and I learned a lot about my country's history.

Q: How would you describe Adam Lapid?

JD: Conscientious, smart, tenacious, driven by a highly developed sense of justice. Due to his experiences in the Holocaust, he has no issues with vigilantism.

Q: Who are some of the authors who influence your writing?

JD: I believe I am influenced to a degree by every book I ever read, every movie I ever saw, every song I ever listened to. In crime fiction I particularly like Lawrence Block, Robert B. Parker, Reed Farrell Coleman, Donald Westlake, Ross Thomas, Stieg Larson, and Jo Nesbo.

Q: What sort of reader would enjoy reading The Dead Sister?

JD: Fans of historical mysteries, murder mysteries, police procedural novels, vigilante justice stories, crime books, and good old-fashioned private investigator novels should find The Dead Sister right up their alley.

Q: Who is your favorite fictional private investigator?

JD: Matt Scudder is one of my favorites. Moe Prager is another.

Q: Are there more Adam Lapid novels in the works?

JD: Yes. I have another mystery coming soon. It's called The Auschwitz Violinist.
