Introduction: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of bite wafers, teethers, chilled teethers, and vibrating oral motor tools on self-reported pain and anxiety that commonly accompanies initial archwire activation. Methods: 150 orthodontic patients aged 9-18 years were randomly assigned to one of five groups and matched for sex and age. One group served as the control while the other four groups received either a bite wafer, teether, chilled teether, or vibrating oral motor tool. The subjects completed baseline questionnaires to assess their levels of anxiety (Six-Item State Anxiety Scale) and pain (a 100-mm visual analogue scale) before initial archwire placement. After initial archwire placement, the subjects were given their respective devices and instructed to use them for at least 20 minutes each day for one week while continuing to answer the anxiety and pain surveys each day. Results: Preadolescent males (9-13) of the Teether Group (p ≤ 0.012) displayed less anxiety than the Control Group. The preadolescent males reported less pain in the Bite Wafer Group (p ≤ 0.001), Chilled Teether Group (p ≤ 0.024), and Vibration Group (p ≤ 0.002) compared with the Control Group. The female groups consistently showed heightened pain levels compared to their controls. Conclusions: Sex and age do affect nonpharmacological interventions for pain and state anxiety. The nonpharmacologic interventions in this study did affect the age and sex groups differently. However, this may have been the result of small group size and should be confirmed in other studies.

This thesis examines Anselm of Canterbury's approach to theology as a case study in theological hermeneutics. I contend that Anselm's early monastic writings exemplify the complementarity of faith and reason. These writings thus constitute a body of work characterised by the so-called ratio fidei (the reason of faith), a theological "principle" of understanding that seeks to know God through a hermeneutic that is simultaneously rational and prayerful. In order to demonstrate Anselm's theological hermeneutics, I work in comparative conversation with the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer to show that Anselm's famous injunction for a faith that is ever seeking understanding entails an irreducibly interpretive and applicational approach to theology.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that as much as 44 percent of the nation's sewer pipes will be in poor if not very poor conditions by 2020. Many Municipalities' sewer infrastructures are coming to an end of an investment cycle and new expenditures in replacing and upgrading, as well as, constructing new infrastructure will be needed. Conditions like these require attentive planning methods. Sewer has the capacity to steer and direct growth when coupled with regulatory planning, such as zoning, opportunities exist. To avoid regretted investments, Geographic Information Systems allows for the visualization of planning choices before they are made. The focus of this thesis is to provide a method that prioritizes future need, specifically in single-family residential housing. Single-family residential housing densities are defined by zoning designations; thus providing an opportunity to model future impact across a study area as well as provide comparative results.

Introduction: Annual scientific meetings serve as a forum for dissemination of new research findings. Presentations should be of high scientific quality as they have the potential to impact future research projects and current clinical practice. The publication rate of podium presentations at an annual meeting can be used to assess the quality of the research presented. The purpose of this study was to determine the publication rate of podium presentations at the 2012 u2013 2014 Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) annual meetings.Methods: All podium presentations from the 2012 u2013 2014 ORS annual meetings were identified. A PubMed search was performed to determine if an abstract reached publication in a peer-reviewed journal. All podium presentations were categorized into a specific orthopaedic topic to determine if there were differences in the publication rate according to the topic. The journal of each full-text publication was identified, as well as the journal impact factor. The time to publication for each published abstract was calculated based on the date of the ORS meeting and the date of publication (rounded to the nearest month). The country and institution of origin of each full-text publication was also recorded.Results: There were a total of 1063 podium presentations at the 2012 u2013 2014 ORS annual meetings. Of these abstracts, 640 were subsequently published in a peer-reviewed journal for an overall publication rate of 60.2%. New Investigator Recognition Award (NIRA) podium presentations had an overall publication rate of 63.5%, though this was not significantly higher than the publication rate of non-recognized presentations at 59.8% (p = 0.5245). The orthopaedic topic with the greatest percentage of podium presentations was cartilage biology (27.1%), followed by bone biology (18.0%) and ligament/tendon biology (13.2%). Abstracts categorized as upper extremity had the highest publication rate (71.1%), followed by spine (66.7%) and bone biology (63.4%). Podium presentations were published in 151 different journals with the journal impact factor ranging from 0.56 to 39.24. The average impact factor for all of the published abstracts was 4.46. The top three most frequent journals for publication were Journal of Orthopaedic Research (10.6%), Journal of Biomechanics (5.2%), and PLoS ONE (5.2%). Time to publication varied significantly by journal (p = 0.025). The majority (75.9%) of abstracts that reached publication did so within 2 years. At 67.0%, the United States was the most common country of origin of all full-text publications, followed by Japan (10.9%) and Canada (3.6%). The top three academic institutions for publication were University of Pennsylvania (5.8%), Cornell University (3.6%), and Columbia University (3.4%). Discussion: The ORS annual meeting is a leading forum for the presentation of high-quality research in the field of surgery and musculoskeletal disease. In 1998, Daluiski et al. reported an overall publication rate of 52% for podium presentations at the 1991 u2013 1993 ORS annual meetings. To our knowledge, no studies evaluating the publication rate of ORS presentations have been conducted since that time. In our study, we found an overall publication rate of 60.2%, which is significantly higher than what was reported over two decades ago (p = 0.0004). This finding might suggest an improvement in the quality of research presented at the meeting. Furthermore, a rate of 60.2% is within the upper range of previously reported publication rates for other orthopaedic surgery meetings.

Development of a Stochastic Metastable Pit Initiation Model with Transition to a Stable Pitstate
A stochastic pit initiation model, using the kinetic Monte Carlo method to simulate localized corrosion, is developed and examined numerically. The model contains both metastable pitting and transition to stable pits components. The metastable pit model uses a non-homogeneous Poisson process with specified generation rates. The metastable pit generation rate takes into account material parameters, such as the pitting potential, and several environmental factors influencing metastable pit formation: chloride levels, sulfur dioxide levels, and time of wetness. The formation of a metastable pit causes a brief spike in current on the surface of the metal. Stable pits are formed when overlapping current spikes from multiple metastable pits reach a required threshold current. Each threshold current is specific to the metal being observed and is derived from the Galvele criterion, that the product of the current density and the pit depth must exceed a critical value. The model determines the chronological formation of metastable pits and their transition from metastable to stable growth in order to track the accumulation and formation of metastable pit and stable pit densities. The model is benched marked against literature field data collected on AA1050 and laboratory data collected on AA7075.

By common consent, cyberspace has emerged as an arena for conducting operations which is as important as land, sea, air, and space before it. Nonetheless with the relative novelty of network operations, cyberspace remains inadequately defended, policed and indeed comprehended. The US Department of Defense (DOD) defines cyber warfare as "the use of computers and the Internet to conduct warfare in cyberspace". However, cyber warfare is merely one aspect of a much broader phenomenon, which in this paper we will term cyber attacks. Traditionally cyber attacks have been categorized into four separate spheres. These are: cyber crime; cyber espionage; cyber terrorism; and cyber warfare. This paper will investigate case studies illustrating all four; yet the cross-over between the spheres is now a significant factor in arriving at clear and workable definitions, due to erosion of dividing lines between the categories because of both social factors and the evolution of communications technology. This paper will argue that the cyber arena has now become far more politicized than traditionally thought. This however does not necessarily imply that all cyber attacks are politically motivated and can be directly associated with government actors; merely that both state and non-state actors around the world are beginning to seize opportunities that cyberspace provides. While non-state actors continue to exercise traditional means of protest such as sit-ins, civil disobedience, demonstration marches, and petitions; there are multiple examples of cyber attacks used to enhance or complement traditional actions as disruptive protest activity spills over into the networked world.
