Struggles for Freedom

release date: Jun 01, 2021
Struggles for Freedom
''Freedom'' has been variously called America''s ''foundational ethic, '' ''ultimate codeword, '' and ''most resonant, deeply held value'' - yet no study has formerly subjected it to sustained, systematic analysis with regards to US foreign policy. Struggles for Freedom: Afghanistan and US Foreign Policy Since 1979 addresses this deficit, inquiring into the cultural production of US national identity to ask not so much what freedom is but, rather, what freedom does. The central theme of this book is the pivotal role that ''freedom'' has played in US foreign policy towards Afghanistan since the Soviet invasion in 1979 - a story that has not previously been told. Andrew Hammond draws on extensive archival research and over 80 interviews with figures such as former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, former Secretary of State George Shultz and the current Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins to offer a radically new perspective on US foreign policy towards Afghanistan. By comparing and contrasting the discourses of freedom employed towards Afghanistan during the Cold War and the Global War on Terror, Hammond explores what he terms the paradox of freedom: how a nation formerly lauded, an example to America and humanity, found itself to be an object of fear and pity, and symbolically linked with a threat to freedom.

Cold War Stories

Cold War Stories
This book is the first comprehensive study of mainstream British dystopian fiction and the Cold War. Drawing on over 200 novels and collections of short stories, the monograph explores the ways in which dystopian texts charted the lived experiences of the period, offering an extended analysis of authors'' concerns about the geopolitical present and anxieties about the national future. Amongst the topics addressed are the processes of Cold War (autocracy, militarism, propaganda, intelligence, nuclear technologies), the decline of Britain''s standing in global politics and the reduced status of intellectual culture in Cold War Britain. Although the focus is on dystopianism in the work of mainstream authors, including George Orwell, Doris Lessing, J.G. Ballard, Angela Carter and Anthony Burgess, a number of science-fiction novels are also discussed, making the book relevant to a wide range of researchers and students of twentieth-century British literature.

The Islamic Utopia

release date: Nov 13, 2012
The Islamic Utopia
Will Saudi Arabia join the democratic wave in the Middle East? Despite being surrounded by states experiencing uprisings and revolutions, Saudi Arabia appears to be a "black hole" for democracy in the Middle East – secretive, highly repressive and still propped up by the West. The Islamic Utopia uses a range of sources including first-hand reporting and recently released WikiLeaks documents to examine Saudi Arabia in the decade after the 9/11 attacks, when King Abdullah''s "reform" agenda took center stage in public debate. It considers Saudi claims of "exemption" from the democratic demands of the Arab Spring. Andrew Hammond argues that for too long Western media and governments have accepted Saudi leaders'' claims to be a buttress against jihadist Islam and that a new policy is needed towards the House of Saud.
