The World as It Is
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From one of Barack Obama’s most trusted aides comes a revelatory behind-the-scenes account of his presidency—and how idealism can confront harsh reality and still survive. “The closest view of Obama we’re likely to get until he publishes his own memoir.”—George Packer, The New Yorker NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE GUARDIAN For nearly ten years, Ben Rhodes saw almost everything that happened at the center of the Obama administration—first as a speechwriter, then as deputy national security advisor, and finally as a multipurpose aide and close collaborator. He started every morning in the Oval Office with the President’s Daily Briefing, traveled the world with Obama, and was at the center of some of the most consequential and controversial moments of the presidency. Now he tells the full story of his partnership—and, ultimately, friendship—with a man who also happened to be a historic president of the United States. Rhodes was not your typical presidential confidant, and this is not your typical White House memoir. Rendered in vivid, novelistic detail by someone who was a writer before he was a staffer, this is a rare look inside the most poignant, tense, and consequential moments of the Obama presidency—waiting out the bin Laden raid in the Situation Room, responding to the Arab Spring, reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran, leading secret negotiations with the Cuban government to normalize relations, and confronting the resurgence of nationalism and nativism that culminated in the election of Donald Trump. In The World as It Is, Rhodes shows what it was like to be there—from the early days of the Obama campaign to the final hours of the presidency. It is a story populated by such characters as Susan Rice, Samantha Power, Hillary Clinton, Bob Gates, and—above all—Barack Obama, who comes to life on the page in moments of great urgency and disarming intimacy. This is the most vivid portrayal yet of Obama’s worldview and presidency, a chronicle of a political education by a writer of enormous talent, and an essential record of the forces that shaped the last decade. Praise for The World as It Is “A book that reflects the president [Rhodes] served—intelligent, amiable, compelling and principled . . . a classic coming-of-age story, about the journey from idealism to realism, told with candor and immediacy . . . His achievement is rare for a political memoir: He has written a humane and honorable book.”—Joe Klein, The New York Times Book Review

After the Fall

release date: Jun 01, 2021
After the Fall
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Vital reading for Americans and people anywhere who seek to understand what is happening ‘after the fall’ of the global system created by the United States” (New York Journal of Books), from the former White House aide, close confidant to President Barack Obama, and author of The World as It Is At a time when democracy in the United States is endangered as never before, Ben Rhodes spent years traveling the world to understand why. He visited dozens of countries, meeting with politicians and activists confronting the same nationalism and authoritarianism that are tearing America apart. Along the way, he discusses the growing authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin, and his aggression towards Ukraine, with the foremost opposition leader in Russia, who was subsequently poisoned and imprisoned; he profiled Hong Kong protesters who saw their movement snuffed out by China under Xi Jinping; and America itself reached the precipice of losing democracy before giving itself a fragile second chance. The characters and issues that Rhodes illuminates paint a picture that shows us where we are today—from Barack Obama to a rising generation of international leaders; from the authoritarian playbook endangering democracy to the flood of disinformation enabling authoritarianism. Ultimately, Rhodes writes personally and powerfully about finding hope in the belief that looking squarely at where America has gone wrong can make clear how essential it is to fight for what America is supposed to be, for our own country and the entire world.

The Runaway

release date: Feb 13, 2018
The Runaway
Although this is story is not part of a series, it does relate to "The Floater." They don''t share a plot, but they do share floater conceptsIn this case, we look at a junior in college retuning home on a Christmas. He likes having Interstate romances and he has brief one on the way home. He visions himself coming to the rescue of a woman stranded by the side of the road. The idea isn''t that farfetched. After all, he''s a good mechanic and cars do break down occasionally. However, in this case he just might have gotten more than he bargained for.

Perfekt, Almost

release date: Feb 01, 2019
Perfekt, Almost
Edited April 2015Edited Feb 2019I prefer to call myself a story teller rather than an author. I use books to tell stories. To say that my stories are far-fetched would be an understatement. Then again, I don''t write them to be realistic. I leave that for authors. I write books for fun and in the hope of bringing fun to others.Perferkt, Almost is about a young man who has things just almost perfect. He''s a deputy marshal assigned to San Diego. You just can''t ask for much more than that. The weather''s nice, the beaches are great and, of course there''s lot''s to do.Unfortunately, as the new guy in town, he''s given the do-nothing job that no one else wants. All the other deputies agree that it''s important; however, they all equally agree that it will be many long boring hours that will accomplish little nothing. So, rather than being out on the beaches, he sits in a car watching an apartment occupied by one very attractive woman. Well, maybe that''s not too bad of a job after all. Indeed, it just might turn out to be interesting, some might even say perfect. I hope so. If not, this story''s going nowhere in a hurry.

Wolf

release date: Feb 22, 2018

Going Home

release date: Jan 12, 2018
Going Home
Lois doesn''t hate her father. She just doesn''t like the way he makes her go to church. At her first chance, she gets married and leaves home. Now she must go home. She has no choice. That of course means going to church. The reason she doesn''t want to go to church is that she finds all the stories she''s learned there so unbelievable. Considering that she has three children, they have to attend church too. It is a lot to put up with, and she doesn''t like it.In the years that she has been away, there is a new preacher at the little church, which complicates matters.Regardless, Lois digs her feet in and determines that there is no way any preacher is going to convert her. ...and she has an advantage. In her younger years she went to church three times a week and attended Sunday school. She knew the Bible far better than most. She knew all the quotations backward and forward. There was no way she was going to blindsided; certainly not the young new preacher. This book is greatly different from any of my other books. I think you will enjoy it. I know you will find it very thought provoking. Some may get angry with it. Some might find several points of disagreement. If you read it to completions, it will make you think.

The Prepper

release date: Jan 05, 2018
The Prepper
As a storyteller, I try to come up with some unusual and different stories. I don''t know if anyone has written a story about a young doomsday prepper, but after watching a few of the shows on TV, I decided I would. As with all my stories, it''s nowhere near real or even realistic. It''s my purpose to make it fun and enjoyable. Those that enjoyed my story, The Survivors, will very likely enjoy this one. Will Brody has decided something bad is going to happen and he wants to be ready for it. Of course, something bad does happen, but it certainly not the result of a doomsday. He''s made plans for just about everything, but not for what happens. Now he''s having to deal with an unusual and serious problem. Worse yet he is having to deal with it with very little help. He has no idea who he can trust. With his back against the wall, he seeks the help of a woman who hates him to the point she won''t talk to him. She might not like him, but he knows she''s honest. He knows she is honest because she hates him.I don''t know about you, but it sounds like fun to me.

Ida

release date: Jan 24, 2018
Ida
Edited and revised October of 2014. It''s just a little longer, a few less errors, and maybe a little more fun.My name is Ben Rhodes. I''m a story teller. I tell stories. Most of my stories are a little unbelievable. Okay. I admit it; they''re real whoppers. I like to think they are fun to read. It is my way of inviting you into my rich imagination.IDA is certainly not an exception. Unlike most of my other books, I can promise you long passages where seemingly nothing happens. I had considered not publishing it, but there are very wonderful passages in there if you can stand all the time it takes to set them up. Some, who have read it, even say it caused them a laugh or two.Maybe there are other stories where the reader is told the outcome from the beginning. I don''t know. In this case there is a reason. Given the circumstances my heroes are put in, it would be foolish for me to try to make you think they might succeed. So from the beginning, I tell you they will fail. There is no since getting your hopes up.Brownie and Annette are given a simple mission. Considering that it''s Annette''s first mission as an IDA agent, that is probably a good idea. The hitch is that not all missions are as easy as they first appear. There are always unforeseen complications. Moreover, sometimes the villains don''t know the script and deviate from it.Brownie''s the experienced agent, but knows nothing about sailboats. In fact he''s never been on one. On the other hand, Annette is the experienced sailor. She''s also had a few years in law enforcement. It would almost seem the perfect team. Their abilities complimented each other''s.Then, of course when dealing with sailboats, a person is at the mercy of the weather. When dealing with a new law enforcement organization, a person is subject to foul-ups and when dealing with the criminals, a person is subject to them changing their plans, or possibly canceling them altogether. In other words, easy or not, it''s unpredictable.Worse yet this one started bad before it started. Wait a minute. That makes no sense. Well that''s okay. It''s not supposed to make sense. It''s not supposed to be believable. It''s just supposed to be fun.

release date: Jan 05, 2018
The Almost Floater
Terry Simpson is always looking for new agents. Unfortunately, his agents have a short survival rate. It is why they get paid so well. The Survivors

release date: Feb 09, 2018
The Survivors
It''s the year 2096 and the world is warming. That''s the line these people are using to sell apartments on the Nimitz. Suddenly, it becomes all too real and people all over are looking for a way to survive the giant heat wave. The Nimitz has two big advantages for surviving. It can go north, where it''s cooler and it can carry a bunch of people.Kyle is one of the survivors and he is called upon more than once to take key positions in their survival. He''s just eighteen years old. Are they asking too much of the man or is he up to the tasks. Will they survive, or will he fail them. It could turn out to be an expensive and disastrous experiment if he overlooks somethingKyle is a rule breaker from the beginning and eventually is sentenced to confinement for it. Then again, some rules are meant to be broken. Maybe, we can overlook his infraction, though the rule was made for their survival. Then too, he''s not the only one breaking rules. Some think they can break the rules regularly without consequence. Some think they don''t need to obey the rules, even the more serious ones. This one is one of my less believable books, but it sure is a lot of fun.

The Detailer

release date: Jan 13, 2018
The Detailer
Edited and Revised Sept, 2014Scott is in trouble again. This time, they are trying to recruit him into their drug organization. This is a three section book. Most readers will be able to read one section at a sitting, though I know a few who read the whole book.In two of the sections, Scott starts out in a jail cell. Of course we both know he can leave them at any time, but he does have his reasons for staying. His big menace in the start of this book is a little man with a big ego who has earned himself a big reputation. However, there are many more villains to hate before this story''s over.Scott has brought his FBI friends back too. Indeed Agent Lisa Duncan has become a leading character and she certainly makes her contribution as do a few other new characters.I might add that each section could almost survive as a small book. I actually considered splitting it into three books, but after a lot of thought, I just didn''t want to take them apart. I determined they belong together. I think you''ll agree.

Kip - the Realist

release date: Jan 30, 2018
Kip - the Realist
Edited 2018Edited and revised June 2015Contains a short preview of "Kip - The Pessimist.", just so you have an honest idea of the story length.Kip is at it again. He''s busy solving new crimes as well as some of the old ones. All the while he''s trying to make sense of the world around him.He wants so badly to resume his relationship with Janet, but she seems firm in her decision to never see him again. He figures if he could ever talk to her, he just might be able to change her mind. With 3000 miles between them, he realizes this is not likely. After all, Kip has become a realist in every respect. Not only because of the world of romance but also because of the crimes he sees and the people who commit them.To Kip it is a horrible world. Then again, he sees the worst of the world on a daily basis. He wants to put the horrible people in prison so badly. Yet it tears at his fabric to see what these people can and will do, sometimes without any reason other than convenience. In this story, we see him trying to find the killers of young boys, who are in turn, would be killers, if they had been allowed to live a little longer. He finds it horrible to see kids killed. Yet he knows well the destruction these two would have caused. We also see his romantic and personal life go in many directions, almost all at once. By the end of the story, it is easy for us to understand why he''s becoming more of a pessimist with every turn of events. As we join Kip, he already has two major frustrations in his personal life. He is about to have one added to his professional one. This book contains some violence. Parents might want to check it before letting a 12 or 13 year-old read it.

Crazy Nuts

release date: Mar 03, 2018
Crazy Nuts
Edited and Revised October 2015I just know you''ve been waiting for it. A woman floater. I call her Kathy, but as with the other floaters, it''s not her real name. It''s for her safety. She had a real nice job flying for the Forestry Service until she saves a woman from falling off a cliff. Little did she imagine that it would drastically change her life so fast. It only stands to reason that she will have to deal with a controller. It is expected. What is not expected are some unusual trees. Some who read this story to the end just might be disappointed. Sorry. My characters have minds of their own. I can''t always keep them in control.

Kip - the Optimist

release date: Jan 30, 2018
Kip - the Optimist
There''s been a murder. It was the type they liked to assign to Kip. Not only was he a good detective, but he was a self proclaimed optimist too. Those that worked with Kip liked to tease him about it.On the other hand he was also a realist. As he says, positive thinking won''t put food on the table, but optimism and a little work will. After all, only an optimist will plant in the spring and expect food come harvest time. Still someone has to plow and plant. He does have his problem with women though. He simply has no long term relationships. Two, maybe three dates and the woman finds a reason to leave him. It''s not something he likes, but he has learned to face it. He is enough of a realist to know that after the third date, if it goes that far, the woman is going to find a reason to leave. He''s been a detective for about three and half years and his third partner has only been with him a few months. He finds this investigation first confusing then frustrating the longer it goes. People are turning up dead all over and he doesn''t seem to be able to get a handle on it.Maybe you''d like to be with him and share in his frustration. Then again, maybe not. It is almost too much for Kip. It just might be too much for you.At the end of this book are the first two chapters of "Kip - The Realist." I say this to keep from deceiving you as to the size of this story. Approximately 17% is sample

Stormy

release date: Jan 12, 2018
Stormy
Edited and Revised December 2014This story differs from the previous two in the series, in that the construction is different, Scott moves into the background a little, and, of course, I add new characters. The chapters resemble short stories each with their own plot. However, most add to one or more of the three major plots. The plots weave their way through the story, sometimes seeming to disappear, only to show up in a latter chapter.Be careful. Some of my titles can be deceitful. As the chapter opens, the title seams to mean one thing, but at the end, you''ll see it means something else. One of the plots involves organized crime and they have big plans to make a large fortune. Then again what''s new? They are always after every dime they can get, no matter who suffers for it. The second plot involves a juvenile gang. One of them is highly armed and they don''t care whose toes they step on to have a little fun. Well, actually, they do more than step on toes. The third plot... I''ll let you figure that one out on your own. You''ll want to look for little surprises as you read. It adds to the fun. Then again, some of the surprises aren''t so little. Well, I guess the intended surprises won''t surprise some of you. Some people can figure things out well in advance regardless of how hard I try. Still, you might have fun seeing the plots develop and weave into a story of... Well, I don''t want to spoil it for you.Oh, I might mention. This story takes place in a real city, though in most cases, the actual location is very vague.

Kip - the Pessimist

release date: Feb 06, 2018
Kip - the Pessimist
Edited and revised June 2015This book contains two chapters from another book. This is about 9% of the book length.Normally I don''t have any religion in my stories. I don''t feel qualified being as I have no degree in theology. This story is different. Kip has his own ideas on how this world should world should be run and he does have some serious discussions on the matter. Now, he''s making deals. He normally does not do such things, but he''s desperate. It seems to him to be the only way to rid himself of a pest.Of course, by now he''s become a pessimist. Among other things, he believes those killers in Mexico will never come north of the border. They are using that invisible line to hide, and now the Mexican officials are having problems with them.Over time, however, he realized that things are not always as they seem and his conclusions aren''t always right. With all this, we all know he remains constant in two things. He still likes to put killers in prison, and he hates breaking bad news to the parents of young kids. Even this causes him confusion when the killers just might be kids.At least he gets a few answers. He doesn''t like some of them and they anger him. On the other hand some answers continue to elude him, but he learns he just has to live with them. One nice thing. He''s working on a nice car that is in particularly good shape. He knows he''s going to make a bundle off of it, that is, if he lives long enough to finish it.

The Assassin's Gun

The Assassin's Gun
Edited and revised April 23, 2014Special Agent McMillan of the FBI is looking for help with a mystery, from of all places a research company. Someone is building guns well suited for assassins. The reason Mac knows is that they are being used and a few of them are discovered.Marion has her work cut out for her this time. She''s in a race against time. The longer it takes to find the gunsmith making them, the more they will be used. Moreover, it seems every time she turns over a rock, she finds another one of the things. This of course, is usually after it is used on someone. It would be nice if Marion could turn her full attention to finding the gunsmith, but she already has a full schedule. Maybe she could put off some of her clients, but which ones. The only clients she has are those that are already very desperate.Besides this, she''s trying to maintain something of a social life. (All this while meddling in Tony''s social life as well)NOTE: It is highly recommended that Stormy is read before this book.

The Coincidence Theory

release date: Jan 16, 2018
The Coincidence Theory
Approximately 4% of this book is a preview for another story.Garrett keeps telling himself that there is no such thing as coincidences, certainly not in detective work. However he seems to be having quite a few lately. More than that, he''s having a difficult time trying to explain them away without admitting to their existence. He also just went through a breakup in which the woman abandoned him for, of all things, a defense lawyer. Though he never asked her to marry him, he''s finding it very difficult to deal with it.A short time after the story starts, he finds himself involved in the two biggest current cases in Los Angeles. He''s assigned to find a serial cop killer and he''s warned firmly to leave the other case alone. Then again, even his supervisors know better. There is no way he''s going to ignore the apparent murder of the blue-eyed blonde he wanted to marry, even though she did leave him.

2 1/2 Weeks

2 1/2 Weeks
Edited and revised July 2014CW02 Lester Morrison (Les) was about as level headed as they get. All he wanted to do was to spend his twenty in the Army and retire. Maybe he would get another job, but if he couldn''t, the retirement check would provide a very adequate living. Then, it looked like it was all gone in a moment of weakness. Well, the woman was very attractive, but that was still no excuse. She was in his chain of command and the regulations were very clear about that. His captain found a way to save his career and maybe let him stay near Jill too. Although it sounded like a good solution at first, it did have a problem. Jill had no intentions of ever marrying anyone in any of the services. Indeed, she refused to even go out with any.She had no animosity toward Les. She wasn''t even upset with the hug he gave her. She would have even tolerated the kiss he started to give her. She just wanted to put her four years in the Army, get married and raise children. Moreover, she wanted them to be brought up in one place, not all over the world. It is sort of strange how two and a half weeks can change that, and them. The setting of this book is a little in the future. Cars are only for a few and/or the wealthy. Drastic measures have been instituted to save energy. Indeed, even Les would not have his little electric cart, but it was a spare from those designated for the officers. The government has changed too. They frequently take bribes and those who win in the courts are usually those who can afford the bigger bribes. To be sure, there are still a few who try to do what they can, but the good land is getting scarce, and it is merely a small technicality when the wrong people own it. Well, usually, anyway.

This is the fifth of the floater group. As I''ve said a few times before, I don''t like my books to become too repetitive, so I''ve put a fewthings in this story to make it different. Al is a Floater, but he is a little different. He gets introuble and as a result he is given an option to avoid serious jail time. The story also considers a few questions about Christianity that I am certain many people havepondered. Many will be glad to know that there is a villainous controller but even he is a little different. Alknows controllers as well as any floater does and this controller has one practice that has Al alittle confused.Oh. You don''t know what floaters or controllers are. Ideally, you might want to go back andread the first in this of books, "The Floater." While these books are not intended to read in anysequence, it might be a good idea to the first one first. It establishes many of the premises thatthe rest of the stories in the group. Other than the premises, the stories are not related. In this case. All Alex want is a peaceful life repairing diesel engines. However, things keep getting in the way. I''ll let you decide if that is good or bad.

Mitch
Edited and revised May 2014Just maybe I can save some time for a few readers. If you like gambling or drug abuse, I can almost guarantee you won''t like this story. I''ve written it specifically to discourage both. If you are school teacher, especially a liberal teaching in public schools, you might find parts of this book offensive. I expect it might even anger you. If you expect perfect grammar, you might want to find another book. You won''t enjoy this one. I can''t afford a few thousand a book for professional editing. I make every effort to make it perfect to the point of proofreading each story at least four times before I publish them. Even then I go back through and proof read them again. I have proofread this story at least ten times and I''m sure there are still errors in it. It''s why you can buy them for less than five dollars each, and, in some cases get them free.On the other hand, if you do read my story, it just might provoke some thought along with the anger. Either way, you have been told in advance.Small excerpt: Miss Adams smiled. "That''s fine. I hope I''m not getting too personal, but your father said your mother died." Jenny settled into a chair next to Miss Adams. "We all took it hard, but especially Dad. He loved her so much, but it was more than that. "She died in a car accident. Let''s see, it was about fourteen months ago. The driver of the other car was a known drug addict, and dealer. He''d been arrested at least a dozen times and convicted twice. Never went to jail for more than a year for either of them. "There were a few tears in her eyes as she continued. "He was doing fifty when he hit the right side of our car. Of course he walked away with only a few scratches." Suddenly, Miss Adams gasped as she realized the implication. "Your father was driving?" Jenny wiped at a tear as it trickled down her cheek. Then she nodded. She knew if she started talking again, she''d lose all control, so she just sat silently trying to brace herself instead. They both sat quiet for a while, and then Jenny continued. "Dad was in the hospital for a week. In a sense, the man killed both of them that night. I don''t think Dad will ever recover." Miss Adams shook her head in unbelief and disgust. "I had no idea. I hope they locked him up and threw away the key." Jenny sat there a while and shook her head. "The next day the guy was arraigned and bond was set. Three hours later, he was in Mexico. He was Mexican and here illegally. Spent only the one night in jail."(End of excerpt)Mitch is close to the perfect antithesis of a stereotype of private investigators.
