release date: May 21, 2019
Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to British Birds
A humorous and very personal guide written by Bill Bailey about his favourite British birds, complete with drawings, notes and cartoons by the comedian himself. 'When herons are spooked they have a habit of vomiting as a defence. Half-digested pieces of eel and water vole skull on your head is not a good look. Just so you know.' Bill Bailey's wonderfully charming and informative book on the birds he loves is now available as a handy, easy-to-carry pocket paperback. Packed with the comedian's observations, illustrations and sketches, this edition is perfect for birdwatching expeditions, with new information for proper twitchers, including: · A 'British Birds' checklist · A list of the best birdwatching sites in the UK · Suggestions of bird spotting equipment · Information about joining a birdwatching club Bailey takes us on a journey around the British Isles, zooming in on those birds that enthuse him the most. Whether it's what they eat, where they fly to or how they communicate, these birds are always fascinating, and he introduces us to their weird and wonderful ways in a manner that is always entertaining. If you're a parent who'd like to appear a bit clever when your child asks you the name of a bird; if you want to find a new and healthy hobby that takes you outdoors; or whether, quite simply, you want to understand a bit more about our natural environment and have a laugh at the same time, this is the companion book to have. Funny and insightful, and positively crackling with energy, knowledge and wit, this beautiful paperback will delight Bailey's fans, birds as well as those who fancy a bit of armchair escapism. Alongside music and stand-up, one of Bailey's favourite pastimes is birdwatching, which he has been doing since he was a child in the West Country. His fondest memories are of family outings with parents, grandparents and cousins, ticking the birds off in his little Observer's Book of Birds. As he has said about those formative years, 'birdwatching gave a purpose to the day and a love of the natural world which has carried on into my adult life'.

Is Alice?

release date: Jun 01, 2011
Is Alice?
DescriptionIs Alice? is a powerful and fictionalised love story. The novel was written solely as a manuscript gift for my partner, and publication is therefore dependent upon her wishes. Her primary one, along with pleasure about its surprising publication, is anonymity. She is not "Alice," and I am not "Theo." This is not a biography. Fiction is used in Is Alice? to illuminate an actual madness along with a real search for the ideas that may help in understanding the living and political nature of consciousness - the structure of "normality" and the "real" world and its incoherent collapse into the hell that is known as schizophrenia. There are passages from the patient's point of view, which make this novel an unusual project. That is because the inner landscape of madness does have a logic and meaning that should be acknowledged and evoked, instead of ridiculed or misunderstood. Contemporary psychology - nevermind clinical psychiatry - fails in its attempt to address the nature of consciousness or its creation of the "world." I believe philosophy underpins psychology, not the other way around. About the AuthorBorn in a small rural town in North Carolina, Bill Bailey began his itinerant life after graduating from university with a degree in philosophy and a keen interest in judo. After being drafted and subsequently ejected by the US Army for being "incompatible," he found work as a prison guard in Canada and continued his study of judo before briefly prospecting for gold in British Columbia. Having meanwhile accidentally married a Texan heiress, he moved to Houston, Texas where he managed a ranch, scrambled motorbikes, rallied sports cars, worked as a bouncer, taught English and French and organised the first white collar union in the US meat-packing industry. He placed third in the Southwestern US Judo Championships (light-heavyweight division) and was awarded his black belt. Backing quickly away from Texas after stumbling into the acting profession he moved to London. Within a year of his arrival he became the first full-frontal male nude on the British stage and, consequently, was featured in a full page photo in Life Magazine opposite Lennon and Ono. In the course of his acting career he has worked extensively in film - in Hollywood and Europe - television, and London's West End. During the Miners' Strike of '84-'85 Bill wrote a play about the strike and toured the embattled coalfields performing with a small company of actors. He is the published author of five novels called The Haug Quintet, an investigation of the political nature of consciousness set in a compelling fictional landscape.

Alone I Fly

release date: Mar 10, 2010
Alone I Fly
The riveting firsthand account of an RAF pilot’s adventures in World War II—from life-and-death situations to unusual posts that test his usual good humor. After several years at sea, Sgt Bill Bailey arrived in Cairo in 1942 as a new recruit to the RAF, hoping to fulfill his ambition to fly bombers. Within hours of his arrival he is sent on his first bombing mission as second pilot in a 104 Squadron Wellington. Hit by enemy gunfire, his aircraft suffered continual loss of altitude until hitting a rock outcrop and disintegrating. Bailey came to lying alone on a precipitous ledge and soon realized that he was the sole survivor. To stay alive in temperatures of over 100 degrees, he trudged over seemingly endless dunes at dusk and dawn, his energy gradually fading. Though he ultimately found shelter in an abandoned German reconnaissance truck, he gradually resigned himself to death. But with a last desperate inspiration Bailey realized that it might be possible to attract attention by heliograph. He found enough equipment in the truck and rigged a mast with the mirror at the top and commenced signaling, eventually being rescued by a Long Range Desert Patrol. After recuperation, Bailey rejoined his squadron and was given a new crew with whom he completed his tour. He was then sent to Malta where much to his amazement he was made ground controller of a satellite fighter airfield. This is Bailey’s uniquely harrowing and humorous account of situations beyond his control—both in and out of the cockpit—during the Second World War.

The Ghost Society

release date: Dec 01, 2009
The Ghost Society
Description The Ghost Society reveals that the State has become a disastrous incubus on the social matrix - the intricate web that constitutes the fabric of human consciousness. The modern State is merely the evolutionary result of a concept born in the distant past, a mechanism to control volumes of people larger than tribal communities. However, this book deals mainly with its contemporary manifestation as it thrusts forward in efforts to globalize its nature and underlying economy. It is written in an approachable and discursive style with a whiff of the classical Platonic and pre-Socratic traditions. The author wishes to avoid the pseudo-scientific rationalism of modern philosophy, as well as verbal continental brain-twisters that leave only professional academics to rake over the meanings. The Ghost Society refers to that group of people who choose - as much as possible - to live outside the values and control of this ever more controlling and inquisitive State. The ordinary concept of "work" is dismissed by the Society as an onerous imposed value that is in large part a contemporary form of indenture or slavery. In turn, the Ghost Society is reduced to invisibility by the State. The initial working title was How to be an Individual Revolutionary. But during the writing the manuscript was transformed into something more interesting and unusual. It became apparent that the next revolution must be quite different from the ones that have defined the current State. The compelling revelation was that there must now be a revolution that changes the social matrix itself, one that surgically removes this old and dangerous entity of the State that enslaves us today. In essence, it is time for human consciousness to evolve in a way that creates a destiny more worthy of the title we have meretriciously awarded ourselves - homo sapiens. Revolution via conscious evolution must happen and continue to happen if we have any hope of becoming any more than just another unsuccessful hominid dead end. We are currently facing a crucial fork in our path - self-realisation or self-destruction. Choices must be made now, as individuals and as communities. The prognosis is bleak, even for optimists. Soon the Ghost Society must become more corporeal if wisdom is ever to be anything more than a dream.
