Wonder

release date: Mar 01, 2022
Wonder
How we can all be lifelong wonderers: restoring the sense of joy in discovery we felt as children. From an early age, children pepper adults with questions that ask why and how: Why do balloons float? How do plants grow from seeds? Why do birds have feathers? Young children have a powerful drive to learn about their world, wanting to know not just what something is but also how it got to be that way and how it works. Most adults, on the other hand, have little curiosity about whys and hows; we might unlock a door, for example, or boil an egg, with no idea of what happens to make such a thing possible. How can grown-ups recapture a child’s sense of wonder at the world? In this book, Frank Keil describes the cognitive dispositions that set children on their paths of discovery and explains how we can all become lifelong wonderers. Keil describes recent research on children’s minds that reveals an extraordinary set of emerging abilities that underpin their joy of discovery—their need to learn not just the facts but the underlying causal patterns at the very heart of science. This glorious sense of wonder, however, is stifled, beginning in elementary school. Later, with little interest in causal mechanisms, and motivated by intellectual blind spots, as adults we become vulnerable to misinformation and manipulation—ready to believe things that aren’t true. Of course, the polymaths among us have retained their sense of wonder, and Keil explains the habits of mind and ways of wondering that allow them—and can enable us—to experience the joy of asking why and how.

Disability

release date: Dec 15, 2021
Disability
"Disability is an indispensable tool for human service practitioners in understanding disability from an empowerment perspective. The authors address policy, theory, description, and practice, stressing the difference of disability rather than the dysfunction of disability. The text is illustrated with in-depth personal narratives by those living with disability and thought-provoking sidebars that ask readers to consider the implications of their own reactions to disability. Mackelprang and Salsgiver establish the historical and societal context in which those with disabilities are marginalized, discuss the major groupings of disabilities, and, finally, offer a model for assessment and practice that human service practitioners can adopt. The book develops a contemporary perspective in which people with disabilities are considered valuable and contributing members of society. Using this book, students will find not only a prescription for professional assessment and practice, but also the necessary understanding of common issues those with disabilities face, the social contexts in which they live, and the tools to work with people with disabilities as equals and partners"--

And, of course, intolerable heat with the temperatures regularly increasing to crisis levels! We often hear the news reports or talk about our concerns with predictable insight, but do we truly understand what’s happening to our planet? Please don’t believe in coincidences - because they’re not! If you wish to know and understand whether we are now on the coalface of climate change, please read my novel, Before it’s too late. Cybersecurity

release date: Sep 14, 2021
Cybersecurity
An accessible guide to cybersecurity for the everyday user, covering cryptography and public key infrastructure, malware, blockchain, and other topics. It seems that everything we touch is connected to the internet, from mobile phones and wearable technology to home appliances and cyber assistants. The more connected our computer systems, the more exposed they are to cyber attacks--attempts to steal data, corrupt software, disrupt operations, and even physically damage hardware and network infrastructures. In this volume of the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, cybersecurity expert Duane Wilson offers an accessible guide to cybersecurity issues for everyday users, describing risks associated with internet use, modern methods of defense against cyber attacks, and general principles for safer internet use. Wilson describes the principles that underlie all cybesecurity defense: confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, authorization, and non-repudiation (validating the source of information). He explains that confidentiality is accomplished by cryptography; examines the different layers of defense; analyzes cyber risks, threats, and vulnerabilities; and breaks down the cyber kill chain and the many forms of malware. He reviews some online applications of cybersecurity, including end-to-end security protection, secure ecommerce transactions, smart devices with built-in protections, and blockchain technology. Finally, Wilson considers the future of cybersecurity, discussing the continuing evolution of cyber defenses as well as research that may alter the overall threat landscape.

Oxford

Oxford
Located primarily in the southernmost regions of Calhoun County with portions in Talladega and Cleburne Counties, Oxford was established on February 7, 1852, by an act of state legislation. Oxford, originally referred to as Lick Skillet, was settled in the 1830s by the Snow and Simmons families. The economy of Oxford for many decades was primarily based on self-sustaining agriculture and trade. During the post-Civil War era, Oxford boomed as a cotton training destination, which assisted in the economic prosperity of cotton production in the 1880s. In the 20th century, Oxford prospered as a cotton manufacturing town with the establishment of Blue Springs Cotton Mill. The business district thrived with numerous drug, dry goods, and mercantile stores. Oxford Lake was the hub of recreation for the county, featuring a dance hall, bowling alley, trolley lines, and boat rides. The people of Oxford deeply believed in family values, education, and faith.

Digital Leadership

release date: Dec 01, 2021
Digital Leadership
This volume discusses the models, definitions, and foundations of leadership in business organizations. Before addressing the fundamental concepts of leadership in corporate organizations, it first describes the understanding of the definition and the interrelationship between leaders, leadership, and change management. The author emphasizes the importance of leadership that influences business results and business organizational change processes. The second is the connection between the leader and employees. It recommends that business leaders should have adequate leadership skills, that is, communication, motivation, delegation, enthusiasm, trustworthiness, feedback, responsibility, creativity, dedication, and flexibility. This volume explores the nature of leadership styles in organizations. Some of the topics covered include: Chapter 1: "Introduction to Leadership;" Chapter 2: "Leadership Theories;" and Chapter 3: "Digitalization and Digital Transformation in Leadership." The volume mentions that neither men nor women will show more transactional or transformational tendencies. It is worth noting that women are significantly different from men on the transformational scale of personal considerations. In addition, the volume did not find any age predictive factors in leadership styles. Further research is needed on the leadership forms at different corporate levels, which may in turn help simplify professional training criteria and the prospects of different individuals for managing competence in the business environment.

Citizen
• A must-read for Christians in the present political conversation • Speaks to the larger narrative of faith rather than mere partisan storytelling Citizen helps Christians find our place in the politics of the world. In these pages, Bishop Andy Doyle offers a Christian virtue ethic grounded in fresh anthropology. He offers a vision of the individual Christian within the reign of God and the life of the broader community. He adds to the conversation in both church and culture by offering a renewed theological underpinning to the complex nature of Christianity in a post-modern world. How did we get here? Is this the way it has to be? Are there implications for conversations about politics within the church? Doyle contends that our current debates are not about one partisan narrative winning, but communities of diversity being unified by a relationship with God’s grand narrative. Crafting a deep theological conversation with a unified approach to the Old and New Testament, Citizen asks, what does it truly mean to live in community?

Yorkshire

release date: Mar 30, 2019
Yorkshire
This is a story about Yorkshire and its people, from the earliest period up to recent times. Foremost it is a story about invasion. Archaeological finds have shown that Yorkshire was occupied at a time when early hunters from continental Europe were not supposed to have ventured so far north. Growing populations on the European mainland made Yorkshire’s fertile land and receding woodland a prime landscape for these first European farmers, and over time they would be followed by waves of invaders intent on pillage and land grabbing. From the north and west came the Picts and the Scots, while the Romans, Angles and Vikings arrived via the River Humber. The Normans would be the last to invade and seek to dominate everything they saw. Each invasion would leave its stamp on Yorkshire’s culture and life, while battles would later be fought on Yorkshire soil during both the Wars of the Roses and the English Civil Wars. More than just a romp through the ages, this book reveals the key places where battles were fought and Yorkshire history was made.

Organizational Behavior

Organizational Behavior
Contrary to the common saying: we do want you to judge this new edition of Organizational Behavior by its front cover. Specifically, featured is that this is the 14th edition, it takes an "Evidence-Based Approach," and similar to the previous edition there are now three Luthans authors. This 14th edition is based on the foundation provided by the first mainline text which has become the classic for the study and understanding of organizational behavior. However, by taking an evidence- based approach, this insures that, even though a classic, this new edition adds the most recent and relevant research to the most extensive, up-to-date reference-base of any organizational behavior text. By adding the two closely related authors (professor sons) literally pumps "new blood" into the sustainability of this classic text by Fred Luthans. Importantly, Fred has recently been recognized with: 1) Lifetime Achievement Award in Organizational Behavior; 2) Top 1% of Citation Count of all researchers in the world; and 3) the #1 most cited author in Organizational Behavior textbooks. Finally, this new edition recognizes that even though the theoretical framework and coverage largely remains, the context of organizational behavior is rapidly changing. This new edition reflects the "New Age" environment, but still holds to the premise that in today''s organizations, success and competitive advantage still comes from the understanding, prediction, and effective management of human resources. With this new edition we invite you to continue the never-ending journey guided by the best organizational behavior theory, research, and application.

The New Negro

release date: Dec 29, 2017
The New Negro
Winner of the 2018 National Book Award for Nonfiction. A tiny, fastidiously dressed man emerged from Black Philadelphia around the turn of the century to mentor a generation of young artists including Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jacob Lawrence and call them the New Negro -- the creative African Americans whose art, literature, music, and drama would inspire Black people to greatness. In The New Negro: The Life of Alain Locke, Jeffrey C. Stewart offers the definitive biography of the father of the Harlem Renaissance, based on the extant primary sources of his life and on interviews with those who knew him personally. He narrates the education of Locke, including his becoming the first African American Rhodes Scholar and earning a PhD in philosophy at Harvard University, and his long career as a professor at Howard University. Locke also received a cosmopolitan, aesthetic education through his travels in continental Europe, where he came to appreciate the beauty of art and experienced a freedom unknown to him in the United States. And yet he became most closely associated with the flowering of Black culture in Jazz Age America and his promotion of the literary and artistic work of African Americans as the quintessential creations of American modernism. In the process he looked to Africa to find the proud and beautiful roots of the race. Shifting the discussion of race from politics and economics to the arts, he helped establish the idea that Black urban communities could be crucibles of creativity. Stewart explores both Locke''s professional and private life, including his relationships with his mother, his friends, and his white patrons, as well as his lifelong search for love as a gay man. Stewart''s thought-provoking biography recreates the worlds of this illustrious, enigmatic man who, in promoting the cultural heritage of Black people, became -- in the process -- a New Negro himself.
