The Last Lobster

release date: Jun 05, 2018
The Last Lobster
From the author of Skipjack & The Melting World comes a mystery: the curious boom in America’s beloved lobster industry and its probable crash Maine lobstermen have happened upon a bonanza along their rugged, picturesque coast. For the past five years, the lobster population along the coast of Maine has boomed, resulting in a lobster harvest six times the size of the record catch from the 1980s—an event unheard of in fisheries. In a detective story, scientists and fishermen explore various theories for the glut. Leading contenders are a sudden lack of predators and a recent wedge of warming waters, which may disrupt the reproductive cycle, a consequence of climate change. Christopher White''s The Last Lobster follows three lobster captains—Frank, Jason, and Julie (one the few female skippers in Maine)—as they haul and set thousands of traps. Unexpectedly, boom may turn to bust, as the captains must fight a warming ocean, volatile prices, and rough weather to keep their livelihood afloat. The three captains work longer hours, trying to make up in volume what they lack in price. As a result, there are 3 million lobster traps on the bottom of the Gulf of Maine, while Frank, Jason, and others call for a reduction of traps. This may in boost prices. The Maine lobstering towns are among the first American communities to confront global warming, and the survival of the Maine Coast depends upon their efforts. It may be an uphill battle to create a sustainable catch as high temperatures are already displacing lobsters northward toward Canadian waters—out of reach of American fishermen. The last lobster may be just ahead.

Immigration and Regional Integration in a Globalizing World

release date: Oct 08, 2015
Immigration and Regional Integration in a Globalizing World
This book challenges prevailing assumptions of a strong connection between international migration and regional integration by arguing there is no substantial relationship between them and that they should not be conflated. Using this perspective, countries can consider the benefits of integration policies without worrying about migration policies.

The Political Economy of the American Revolution

release date: Sep 04, 2015
The Political Economy of the American Revolution
Do You Know What the American System Of Economics is All About? Most Americans actually don''t—and it''s not because they are actually stupid. It''s because there''s been a systematic suppression of the truth, to the point where it''s been written out of the history books and schools throughout the nation. The Political Economy of the American Revolution was first published in 1977 in order to revive the truth about American history. Newspaper editor Nancy Spannaus and historian Christopher White assembled the crucial writings which defined the American System, as a continuation of the Italian Golden Renaissance tradition, and a war against British imperialism and free trade. They produced a book of readings which served as an assault on the Treason School of American history. This new edition adds some crucial materials, but its guts are the same: the works of Alexander Hamilton and his French predecessor, Jean-Baptiste Colbert. These are writings you either can''t find anywhere else, or which are hard to find. They are supplemented by introductory essays by Spannaus and White. The scholar and the conscientious citizen will find this book indispensable. The American war against British imperialist methods continues today, and must be won.

The Intimate Rembrandt

release date: Mar 24, 2022
The Intimate Rembrandt
Christopher White explains why he chose this title for his new book: ''The often intimate, reflective and personal side to Rembrandt''s work in treating subjects from history or the Bible reveals an increasingly more introspective interpretation than his contemporaries.'' Rembrandt''s sharp eye draws inspiration from the domestic scene, the local street and wherever he went. His subjects include: children, beggars, musicians, dogs, pigs, horses; even elephants and lions. White studies Rembrandt''s technique from an aesthetic rather than a scientific point of view; his willingness to experiment whether drawing, painting or etching is a notable feature of his work, and by discussing examples of the three different media side by side, the author demonstrates their interdependence.

Anthony Van Dyck and the Art of Portraiture

release date: Mar 09, 2021
Anthony Van Dyck and the Art of Portraiture
A beautiful, lively tour through the portraits of one of the most celebrated painters of 17th century Europe In this sumptuously illustrated volume, eminent art historian Sir Christopher White places the portraiture of renowned Flemish painter Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) in context among the work of his contemporaries working in and around the courts of seventeenth-century Europe. Van Dyck''s artistic development is charted through his travels, beginning in his native Antwerp, then to England, Italy, Brussels, the Hague, and back again. Combining historical insights with a discerning appreciation of the work, White brings Van Dyck''s paintings to life, showing how the virtuoso not only admired his artistic predecessors and rivals but refashioned what he learned from them into new kind of portraiture. Beautifully produced and a pleasure to read, this book is an important contribution to the literature on a celebrated painter.

The Happenstance Packs the Wolf, a Butcher, His Demon, and Their Master
In the dense woodland and harsh humidity of the Georgia/Florida border, a ruthless, and idyllic, Captain attempts to right his old wrongs and heal festering wounds to sustain his own lawfully rigid empire in this coastal wasteland. Helping him enforce his power are his two protégés, Cliff Ramos and Cooper Cornelius Happenstance, known better as Coop. Ramos is a young and brilliant detective, orphaned at an early age, and has always felt apart from the norm of humanity. He is being mentored by the older, and very animalistic Coop whose instincts are never in question. Both men have a unique ability to find, and create trouble, and are in a constant battle with themselves to either accept the demonic urges inside them or to rise up against that part of themselves and embrace their humanity....or is there a way to do both? This tale unfolds to hilarious, dark, and violent chapters of human greed, animal desires, and other worldly phenomenon, as Ramos, Cooper, and the Captain work to maintain power over their sanity and reality. When Coop''s daughter, Sam, begins to have people die around her, both men are directed to investigate. Ramos and the girl are fallen lovers from high school, and he is vying to get her back. Coop cares for nothing since his wife died, except to protect Sam from any harm. Who is committing these random acts of murder? Is it Boogy, Sam''s estranged eco-terrorist husband and father to her child? Is it the crime syndicate of The Viking, striking back at Coop for destroying their local operations years ago after they had brutally murdered his wife? Or does the trail lead closer to home, possibly implicating Sam, or even Ramos and Coop?

The Music in the Data

release date: Jan 01, 2022
The Music in the Data
Putting forward an extensive new argument for a humanities-based approach to big-data analysis, The Music in the Data shows how large datasets of music, or music corpora, can be productively integrated with the qualitative questions at the heart of music research. The author argues that as well as providing objective evidence, music corpora can themselves be treated as texts to be subjectively read and creatively interpreted, allowing new levels of understanding and insight into music traditions. Each chapter in this book asks how we define a core music-theory topic, such as style, harmony, meter, function, and musical key, and then approaches the topic through considering trends within large musical datasets, applying a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative interpretation. Throughout, several basic techniques of data analysis are introduced and explained, with supporting materials available online. Connecting the empirical information from corpus analysis with theories of musical and textual meaning, and showing how each approach can enrich the other, this book provides a vital perspective for scholars and students in music theory, musicology, and all areas of music research.

But this last vestige of American sailing culture is rapidly dying. State officials have mismanaged the waters, putting sport above business, and modernization above tradition. These captains must set aside their rivalry to fight for their very livelihood. With so many obstacles, it is not certain the fleet will survive the season.
