Integration of Environmental, Biological, and Human Dimensions for Management of Mountain Lions (Puma Concolor) in Montana

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Integration of Environmental, Biological, and Human Dimensions for Management of Mountain Lions (Puma Concolor) in Montana
Recent increases in mountain lion (Puma concolor) populations throughout western North America challenge wildlife managers who attempt to achieve a balance between the beneficial and detrimental aspects of a large carnivore in human dominated environments. A lack of understanding of the environmental, biological, and human dimensions that affect mountain lions and the interrelationships of these dimensions has been an impediment to effective lion management. I used a combination of ecological and social science methods to determine: (1) factors that influence the distribution and abundance of mountain lions; (2) vital rates that most affect lion population growth; and, (3) factors that determine stakeholder preferences for lion populations. Records of 4,057 mountain lion deaths from 1971-1994 were used to develop a total mortality index (TMI) as an indirect index of mountain lion abundance. A 2-factor model that included quantitative measures of lion habitat and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) abundance was the most parsimonious model (r$\sp2$ = 0.78) for prediction of TMI on a state-wide basis. Within specific ecoregions, there was a strong linear relationship (r$\sp2$ = 0.89) between white-tailed deer abundance and TMI in the Montane Ecoregion west of the continental divide. A similar strong linear relationship (r$\sp2$ = 0.74) existed between elk (Cervus elaphus) abundance and TMI in the Intermountain Ecoregion of southwest and central Montana. Sensitivity analyses of a stochastic population simulation model indicated adult survival was the most important vital rate in affecting the intrinsic rate of increase in lion populations. A mail questionnaire was used to determine factors that affect stakeholder preferences for mountain lion populations. A 3-factor model that included measures of respondent' s perceptions about the direction of current mountain lion population trends, attitudes towards lions, and beliefs about risks to humans from lions, correctly predicted the desired trend of 73.8% of respondents who wanted a smaller lion population and 90.8% who wanted a larger population or no change. Recommendations to influence the environmental, biological, and human dimensions of mountain lions are presented within integrated management matrices. Implications of the temporal and spatial scales and the interrelationship of the 3 management dimensions are discussed.

Sufferings in Africa: Captain Riley's Narrative

Sufferings in Africa: Captain Riley's Narrative
Shipwrecked off the western coast of North Africa in 1815, New England sea-captain James Riley and members of his crew were robbed of every possession and made slaves to a band of nomadic Arabs. Forced into servitude in the nearly unbearable heat of the Sahara, Riley survived weeks naked in the desert (his skin roasting in the sun and his legs and backside worn bloody from riding camels bareback), countless confrontations with various sheiks and bandits determined to profit either by his death or his ransom, on meager rations of water and often eating only the scrap's from his master's table (often only a little camel's milk or the roasted entrails of a sheep or goat).

Accounts of the Wreck of the Commerce

release date: Sep 01, 2011
Accounts of the Wreck of the Commerce
An Authentic Narrative of the Loss of the American Brig "Commerce" by James Riley A Journal, Comprising an Account of the Loss of the Brig "Commerce," of Hartford, (Con.) James Riley, Master by Archibald Robbins A great American naval adventure of the early nineteenth century The year 1815 was a momentous one. On the muddy slopes of Waterloo in Belgium Napoleon, who had set Europe ablaze for two decades, was brought to ruin. Across the Atlantic the United States of America had concluded its war with Britain having ended the conflict with a famous victory at New Orleans. Meanwhile in the eastern Atlantic an American merchant vessel and its crew underwent a drama which, although it was not significant to the world at large, would mean catastrophe, slavery and death for some of them. The brig Commerce out of Connecticut was sailing between Gibraltar and the Cape Verde Islands on a trading voyage when she ran aground on Cape Bojador off the coast of the Western Sahara desert. The ship and crew were attacked by local tribesmen of the Sahrawi. One man was killed and the rest of the crew, after terrible ordeals, were captured by Bedouin tribesmen. They suffered constant brutality at the hands of their captors as they were force marched through the desolate landscape and suffered dehydration and starvation before their eventual liberation. This Leonaur edition contains two accounts by crew members including one by the ship's master, James Riley. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States cited Riley's book as one as the most significant and inspirational books he read as a youth. Indeed, Riley's account was a phenomenal bestseller in America at the time of its first publication selling over 1,000,000 copies. The second account here is by Archibald Robbins and is included to give readers a perspective on the incident from by one of the ship's able seamen. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Confiscated by the state, the former Oliver Iron Works were revitalized and expanded during the first half of the 19th century bringing prosperity to the surrounding village and its residents. The abandonment of shovel-making in the 1850s, however, led to the rapid decline of Muttock which remained forgotten for a century until the 1960s when Oliver Mill Park was created. An anthology of the best historical writings about Muttock as well as a guidebook to the history and architecture of the district, Muttock: Middleborough's Revolutionary Village tells the fascinating story of a colonial New England village wracked by Revolutionary turmoil and 19th century industrial decline and how it was rediscovered a century later.

A Theology for Christian Education

release date: Jan 01, 2008
A Theology for Christian Education
What is "Christian" about Christian education; how is it different from on-Christian education? A Theology for Christian Education examines this question in depth and argues that the doctrines of systematic theology should drive the content, purpose, and methods of the educational program of the c hurch. The book states: "Christian education is distinct from other kinds of education in that its aim is the transformation of the whole person into the likeness of Christ (Col. 1:28). Christian education is the process of accomplishing this aim." A Theology for Christian Education dedicates chapters to examining particular doctrines and their implications for Christian education. It is the only serious academic text to offer a systematic presentation of the intersection of theology and Christian education from a conservative evangelical perspective.

Excavating the Land of Jesus

release date: Jun 20, 2023
Excavating the Land of Jesus
How do archaeologists unearth the daily life of people from Jesus's time? Contrary to popular belief, archaeology of first-century Roman Galilee is not about illustrating or proving the gospels, drawing timelines, or hunting treasure. Rather, it is about understanding the lives of people, just like us, who lived in the time of Jesus. How do we conceive of Jesus and his mission as part of a larger world? How did different groups in Roman Galilee understand their identities and values? How do we interpret material culture in conjunction with textual evidence from the gospels? On a more basic level, how do we know where and how to dig? James Riley Strange teaches students how to address these problems in Excavating the Land of Jesus. Drawing on professional experience as a scientific archaeologist in Israel, Strange explains current methodology for ground surveying, excavating evidence, and interpreting data. Excavating the Land of Jesus is the ideal textbook for students seeking answers in the dirt of the Holy Land.

The 20th Century: A Retrospective

release date: Mar 13, 2002
The 20th Century: A Retrospective
Three grand themes characterized the twentieth century: crises or a scale that outstripped any in human history; revolutionary ideology and action that brought social and political transformations on a global scale; and new technologies breathtaking in their pace and innovation. It was a century of triumphant creativity and achievement, yet it witnessed violence and destruction of appalling, even cataclysmic, intensity. How can such contradictions be captured so that those who live in the twenty-first century may understand, and perhaps learn from, the varieties of human experience in the twentieth century? The authors go back to around 1880 to present a thematic history of the tumultuous twentieth century organized in fifteen chapters that stress cultural, social, and material issues as well as major political developments. Illustrations and suggestions for further reading, films, and videos enhance this innovative text. Book jacket.

The Golden King and his Faceless army are spreading shadow magic across land, and his next target is the Cursed City.
