A Life Worth Living

release date: Dec 16, 2020
A Life Worth Living
This book is about matters that dont seem to be shared by most professors of religious matters. It is a narrative that seems to naturally lead to a progression of topics not generally dealt with. It presents some exciting concepts to those who have been born again but can be applicable for evangelism as well. I say it is exiting because of how it can effect the spiritual experience of anyone who is favorable to the Christian faith. The article on the new life led me to see that some of the topics included might need further clarification, thus resulting in the inclusion of seven topics that support the article. These are discussed in the first part of this book. A Christian needs to know of these things about possible relationships with God, and about his relationship with the sin problem.

Sapphires

release date: Jul 10, 2000
Sapphires
Sapphires is written to entertain. Its conflict of ideals and outcome may surprise some, startle a few, and morally disturb many. Hopefully the reader will cry a little, think a little, and laugh a little. During the Vietnam conflict, Hanoi ingeniously created a drug-cash-weapons triangle, patiently exploiting greed and personal weaknesses in its victorious efforts. Using narcotics from Burma as an offensive and defensive weapon, Hanoi directed the sale of drugs to military personnel and used the profits to purchase arms and munitions, often from U.S. supply depots. In addition, Hanoi used strategic timing and flooded U.S. troops with cheap narcotics, hindering military effectiveness. Thailand was a major highway for drugs into Vietnam. Prevented, by diplomatic treaty, from taking direct military action, the Joint Chiefs of Staff created a multi-service covert unit, code name Sapphire, to interrupt the drug-cash-weapons triangle and identify as many corrupt U.S. military personnel as possible. U.S. Army colonel and Sapphire group leader, code name Blue, was John Leopold. John, a former SEAL, is a darling of the Joint Chiefs and on track to become a general officer. His carefully handpicked team consists of a navy lieutenant, code name Orange; a marine captain, code name Green; an air force nurse, code name Black; a Thai national, code name Clear; and a Burmese national, code name Yellow. The Sapphires' main opponent is a Burmese family who raise and package for market a highly profitable farm product - heroin. The Zawatees, headed by the family matriarch, Su Song, use profits from heroin to supply educational, health care, electric, and other services for the citizens of their southern Burma district, a district with a higher standard of living than in all of Burma. The Zawatees, and the citizens of their district, fight for the right to export their highly profitable farm product in order to afford and enjoy a high quality of life and first-world privileges. The Sapphires'; through diplomacy, battle, personal sacrifice, and tragedy, manage a degree of success. While planning and carrying out the final Sapphire-Zawatee confrontation, Colonel Leopold, who has come to admire his adversary, resolves some very strong personal and cultural ideals.

Writing Workplace Cultures

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Writing Workplace Cultures
In Writing Workplace Cultures: An Archaeology of Professional Writing, Jim Henry analyzes eighty-three workplace writing ethnographies composed over seven years in a variety of organizations. He views the findings as so many shards in an archaeology on professional writing at the beginning of the twenty-first century. These ethnographies were composed by either practicing or aspiring writers participating in a Master’s program in professional writing and editing. Henry solicited the writers' participation in "informed intersubjective research" focused on issues and questions of their own determination. Most writers studied their own workplace, composing "auto-ethnographies" that problematize these workplaces' local cultures even as they depict writing practices within them. Henry establishes links between current professional writing practices and composition instruction as both were shaped by national economic development and local postsecondary reorganization throughout the twentieth century. He insists that if we accept basic principles of social constructionism, the text demonstrates ways in which writers "write" workplace cultures to produce goods and services whose effects go far beyond the immediate needs of its clients.

Jellofish

release date: Jan 01, 2015
Jellofish
Four World War II veterans have been playing a monthly game of poker since 1945. They have been dragging 5 percent from every pot for more than 50 years, and this "side pot" has grown to a sizable fortune. As Billy, Earl, Kooch and Dale compete in this monthly game of skill and luck, they struggle over what to do with their shared nest egg. As the debates escalate, their conflicting views on love, friendship, politics, death and taxes are revealed. The only referee in the debate seems to be Judy Clabber, a single mother who is Billy's cleaning lady. She is both adored and revered by the men, who seem to look to her for any shred of common sense. The events of their lives are revealed as each player comes upon a random "history chip" among their piles of poker winnings. The history chips were created during the past 50 years by one of the players when a significant event occurred in their lives. A child or grandchild is born, and the baby's name is forever memorialized with a black marker on a poker chip and tossed back into the pile. While the significance of history chips such as Grand Slam, Raccoon, Celery, Nazi, Limpy G and Jellofish are revealed, the deeper implications of a lifetime of friendship and competition are explored as the cards are dealt. In the end, which player holds the trump card? Who will survive this game of wits and be the heir presumptive to their poker fortune? Will rivalry and resentment destroy their friendships and the game itself? The table is set. Shuffle up and deal. Jellofish is a winner of the AACTNewPlayFest.
