The Naval Miscellany

release date: Apr 29, 2019
The Naval Miscellany
This was the first of the Miscellany volumes and while it contains documents from the sixteenth century to the turn of the nineteenth century, the majority relate to the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Of the two sixteenth century documents, one relates to French warship signals and the other is a narrative of the Cadiz expedition. There is a translation of a Portuguese description of the Battle of Quiberon Bay and the journals of Captain Duncan between 1776 and 1782. The rest of the selection are correspondence of Viscount Hood, letters describing daily life in the navy, extracts relating to life in the East India Company's service, official correspondence on the capture of Heligoland in 1807 and 41 letters to and from Nelson.

State Papers Relating to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada

State Papers Relating to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada
These are chiefly 'State Papers' in the narrow sense of records of the English Secretary of State, but include other English government documents from the Public Record Office and the British Museum. Vol II August to December 1588. In appendices Vol.II prints a list of the English fleet; letters of Captain Thomas Cely from a Spanish prison in 1579; a proposal to increase seamen's wages in 1585; a translation of Medina Sidonia's narrative as printed in Fernandez Duro's La Armada Invencible; and a list of the Spanish fleet, chiefly from Fernandez Duro. The Mary Rose has now been unveiled in her entirety, marking the end of the 34-year project to preserve her after she was raised from the seabed in 1982. Viewers can now see the ship clearly, unmasked by glass or conservation jets. In 2017 The Naval Miscellany Volume VIII was published with details of her last campaign in 1545. To study the broader context of the Mary Rose, particularly the history of the second Mary Rose, a 29-gun galleon built in 1555 which fought in the Spanish Armada. She features in both volumes of 'State Papers Relating to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada', the first two volumes ever published by the Navy Records Society. he Mary Rose, particularly the history of the second Mary Rose, a 29-gun galleon built in 1555 which fought in the Spanish Armada. Recollections of James Anthony Gardner

Recollections of James Anthony Gardner
The editors began their introduction to this volume by remarking that it contains 'very little history, as commonly understood' -by which they meant the history of naval operations. Gardner's Service career was undistinguished for reasons which can easily be inferred from his stories, but he was clearly a convivial shipmate, and as a raconteur of life afloat he can hardly have been equalled. This is easily the funniest volume the Society has ever issued.

Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life and Correspondence of Henry Reeve, C. B., D. C. L, Vol. 2 of 2 How far the murderous attempt of Orsini, on January 14th, 1858, was connected with the political relations of France and Italy it is as yet impossible to say. It was, and still is, very commonly believed that in his youth Louis Napoleon had been affiliated to one or other of the secret societies of Italy, that he was still pledged to this, was bound to obey its orders; and that Orsini was an agent to remind him that the attainment of high rank, far from releasing him from the bond, rendered it more stringent, as giving him greater power and facility for carrying out the orders he received. The independence Of Italy was aimed at; and it had been intimated to the Emperor that Orsini's was only the first of similar messages which, if action was not taken, would be followed by a second, with greater care to ensure its delivery. Studies in Naval History Biographies (Classic Reprint)

Studies in Naval History Biographies (Classic Reprint)
Excerpt from Studies in Naval History Biographies These Studies, now collected from the different magazines in which they have first appeared, will not, I hope, be considered as merely reclaimed waifs; for the idea of thus bringing them together in a more permanent form has always been present to me, even whilst originally writing them: and having carefully revised them by the light of the most recent published information and of our own Records, to which the Admiralty has been pleased to permit me free access, I offer them, not only as the relation of some stirring episodes in naval history, but as, each in its own way, a contribution to the earnest study of naval policy, strategy, or tactics. I have only to add that the dates relating to Continental affairs are given throughout in New Style: those which belong to English correspondence, English records, or to purely English incidents are in Old Style; though occasionally I have given the double date. It is always a troublesome point, and I can only hope that I have minimised the customary confusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nelson and His Companions in Arms

release date: May 01, 2009
Nelson and His Companions in Arms
Originally published in 1896 and with numerous illustrations this early works is a comprehensive and informative look at the subject. PREFACE: Very many lives of Nelson have been written from almost as many different points of view. With these the present work does not enter into competition. The author has elsewhere related the story of Nelson's career in some detail, and has not attempted to repeat it here; but while dwelling on the principle incidents in Nelson's life and on the glories of his achievements, he has endeavoured to describe some of the influences which tended to form Nelson's character; some of those who so nobly worked with him in securing the liberty and establishing the greatness of England.......Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
