Christmas Comes But Once a Year (Esprios Classics)
John Leighton (15 September 1822 - 15 September 1912) was an English artist notable for his book illustrations and book cover designs. His talent for design found early expression in the publication Suggestions in Design ... for the Use of Artists and Art Workmen (1852). This was a work that expounded Leighton's values and beliefs with regard to the history of design. He used the ornaments and designs repeatedly in the thirty years after its publication with regard to illustrations within books, and for many hundreds of drawings for book cover designs.

release date: Mar 23, 2011
Fifty Years in China - The Memoirs of John Leighton Stuart, Missionary and Ambassador
John Leighton Stuart, who was born and brought up in Hangchow, China, where both his father and mother were leading missionaries, tells us that in his boyhood he always had “an aversion for missionary life.” Even after his graduation from Hampden-Sydney College, he still confessed his “lack of enthusiasm for missionary service.” It is difficult to exaggerate the aversion I had developed against going to China as a missionary, . . . haranguing crowds of idle, curious people in street chapels or temple fairs, selling tracts for almost nothing, being regarded with amused or angry contempt by the native population, physical discomforts or hardships, etc., no chance for intellectual or studious interests, a sort of living death or modern equivalent for retirement from the world. But, after prolonged inner struggle, Dr. Stuart finally decided “to put my religious belief to what was for me then the ultimate test.” He became a missionary to China and, as such, lived and worked in China for nearly half a century!

One of Scotland's best loved painters First woman artist to be elected to both the Royal Academy and Royal Scottish Academy Includes an introduction by John Leighton, the Director-General of the National Galleries of Scotland This extensively illustrated book is devoted to the art of Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, one of Scotland's best loved painters. Blackadder's art explores a diverse range of subjects through many mediums. The artist draws on experiences of foreign travel, as well as plant forms and animals closer to home, to produce highly original works that appear to breathe with their own life. Her deeply analytical eye allows her to see the underlying structure, design and color harmony in both the exotic and the everyday. This book tells the fascinating story of her career, from her early days as a student in Edinburgh, and her friendships with Scottish painters William Gillies, William MacTaggart and Anne Redpath, to her very recent work."

Seurat and the Bathers

release date: Aug 01, 1997
Seurat and the Bathers
In Seurat and The Bathers the authors discuss the various choices Seurat made with regard to subject, format and technique in preparing this monumental painting. They relate Seurat's working methods - the preparatory oil sketches and drawings - and the painting's physical nature - colour, brushwork and surface - to his academic training, his study of optical theory, the development of his distinctive drawing style, and his early interest in plein-air oil sketching and impressionism. Stylistically, Seurat responded to the French tradition of monumental figure painting and also to contemporary artists, both Salon painters and Impressionists, arriving at a paradoxical but subtle new synthesis. Finally the authors consider the subject matter of the Bathers in relation to other nineteenth-century representations of middle- and working-class life and leisure activities in the Parisian suburbs, particularly at Asnieres.
