A History of American Higher Education

release date: Apr 02, 2019
A History of American Higher Education
The definitive history of American higher education—now up to date. Colleges and universities are among the most cherished—and controversial—institutions in the United States. In this updated edition of A History of American Higher Education, John R. Thelin offers welcome perspective on the triumphs and crises of this highly influential sector in American life. Exploring American higher education from its founding in the seventeenth century to its struggle to innovate and adapt in the first decades of the twenty-first century, Thelin demonstrates that the experience of going to college has been central to American life for generations of students and their families. Drawing from archival research, along with the pioneering scholarship of leading historians, Thelin raises profound questions about what colleges are—and what they should be. Covering issues of social class, race, gender, and ethnicity in each era and chapter, this new edition showcases a fresh concluding chapter that focuses on both the opportunities and problems American higher education has faced since 2010. The essay on sources has been revised to incorporate books and articles published over the past decade. The book also updates the discussion of perennial hot-button issues such as big-time sports programs, online learning, the debt crisis, the adjunct crisis, and the return of the culture wars and addresses current areas of contention, including the changing role of governing boards and the financial challenges posed by the economic downturn. Anyone studying the history of this institution in America must read Thelin's classic text, which has distinguished itself as the most wide-ranging and engaging account of the origins and evolution of America's institutions of higher learning.

From its opening in 1976 until its closure in late 2005, Libertyland was a first roller coaster ride, a first date, a family reunion, a summer job, or simply a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the real world.

Alliance Management and Maintenance

release date: Mar 23, 2016
Alliance Management and Maintenance
The maintenance and management of the NATO alliance is a delicate balancing act between responding to security threats and navigating the bargaining positions of the member states. This book highlights how the alliance managed to maintain that balance in an area critical to its operations today around the world - changing its Cold War-era doctrine and structures. Based on his findings, John Deni debates whether the NATO alliance ought to be considered by policy makers to be a political organization first and a military one second. Providing new empirical data valuable to our understanding of NATO's post-Cold War evolution, the book offers a unique perspective on alliance management and maintenance. It sheds light on the continuing debate surrounding NATO's role in security, how the alliance will fight and whether NATO is properly structured to continue providing security for its member states.

Held

Held
Held is an unfolding map to where our nights can take us. The poems are urgent, overpowering, biting. Whispering pillow-soft; shouting into gentle, tangling rain. They have the snap and crunch of fire devouring twigs-warming, seeking. They are sliding beads of water that paint themselves into words of love. Dynamic, trembling, dancing across the page. A fog of intimacy pierced only by moonlight and the spark of yearning. Come inside, and these poems will embrace you in a way that does not possess but comforts.

Have You Seen My Daddy?

release date: Sep 20, 2020
Have You Seen My Daddy?
Who is your daddy? If Pastor John R. Peyton was asked this question when he was a boy, he might be ashamed to admit who his daddy was, having grown up in an abusive household with an alcoholic, womanizing father. However, now as a faithful servant of God and pastor of a loving church, he can now say his true daddy is that of his heavenly Father God. His new book, Have You Seen My Daddy?, is Pastor John's detailed life story, beginning with his birth and childhood in Virginia to a strong Christian mother and an abusive, lost father. As he grew up, he witnessed hypocrisy in his home church and racism from other churches, wondering if this Jesus that was spoken of was really someone to be praised and worshipped. He was soon drafted into the army and traveled to Central America and, all while struggling with his hatred toward white people that intensified through his involvement with the Black Panther Party. It wasn't until the most unlikely of people witnessed to him of God's love and Jesus's sacrifice that Pastor John's life turned around and because of this he was sent to Vietnam. As Pastor John moved forward with his life, becoming a husband and father to three daughters, he began to feel God leading him down certain paths where his testimony of God taking away the hate and bringing him peace was impacting people's lives. Pastor John, as an agent of reconciliation for God, has been the vessel to change the lives of many, from lost lives in prison ministry to the well-to-do and various races and statuses. The hope is that readers will understand through his life story the need for God in our lives and that change for the better can only happen through Jesus. Have you seen your Daddy? Because He's looking for you!

A History of the American Revolution

release date: Jul 10, 2013
A History of the American Revolution
The history of the American rebellion against England, written by one of America’s preeminent eighteenth-century historians, differs from many views of the Revolution. It is not colored by excessive worship of the Founding Fathers but, instead, permeated by sympathy for all those involved in the conflict. Alden has taken advantage of recent scholarship that has altered opinions about George III and Lord North. But most of all this is a balanced history—political, military, social, constitutional—of the thirteen colonies from the French and Indian War in 1763 to Washington’s inauguration in 1789. Whether dealing with legendary figures like Adams and Jefferson or lesser-known aspects of a much picked-over subject, Alden writes with insights and broad eloquence.

Apocalypse

release date: May 02, 2013
Apocalypse
Winner of the American Sociological Association's 'Distinguished Book Award' in the Religion category. For most of us, "Apocalypse" suggests the cataclysmic end of the world. Yet in Greek "apocalypse" means "revelation," and the real subject of the Book of Revelation is how the sacred arises in history at a moment of crisis and destiny. With origins in ancient religions, the apocalyptic has been a transformative force from the time of the Crusades, through the Reformation, the French Revolution and modern communism, all the way to the present day "Islamic Jihad" and "War on Terror." In Apocalypse, John R. Hall explores the significance of apocalyptic movements and the role they have played in the rise of the West and "The Empire of Modernity." This brilliant cross-disciplinary study offers a novel basis for rethinking our social order and its ambivalent relations to sacred history. Apocalypse will attract general readers seeking new understandings of the world in challenging times. Scholars and students will find a compelling synthesis that draws them into conversation with others interested in religion, theology, culture, philosophy, and phenomenology, as well as sociology, social theory, western civilization, and world history.

Catalysis

release date: Dec 06, 2012
Catalysis
A very wide range of catalytic conversions find industrial use in organic process chemistry. The scale of the ope rations varies enormously from very high volume pro cesses to specialty chemical preparations. Many of these processes are functional group conversions or class reac tions, and the more important of these will receive detailed treatment in specific chapters throughout this series. Nevertheless, the scope is very broad, and it is all too easy for the non-specialist to become lost in a large volume of detail. To try to avoid this, the first chapter in this volume, by Dr. Paul N. Rylander provides a working summary of the more important catalytic con versions of this type. In doing this, he also gives some valuable comments about catalyst selection, together with an indication of the reaction conditions used in practice, the more important of the problems usually encountered, and comments about the most important of the mechanistic features. It has long been recognized that an understanding of the chemical nature of solid surfaces is fundamental to an understanding of catalytic processes which may take place upon them. This question may be approached in two distinct ways. One is via surface crystallography which focuses attention upon long range order. The second concentrates upon the concept of the surface functional group where attention is mainly upon the chemistry characteristic of a particular localized atomic arrangement at the surface. In practice, of course, there exists a continuum between these idealized extremes.
