Feeling Fate

release date: Apr 26, 2022
Feeling Fate
As her sweetheart’s body lies cooling on the living room floor, Joni Sensel—shattered but not surprised—revisits her premonition about this moment. From nearly the start of their fairy tale romance less than four years ago, she knew she would lose Tony, the man she considered to be her soul mate. He was in great health, but fate had other plans—a hard truth that visited Joni in the form of a startling vision during their second weekend together. Though she kept the premonition a secret while Tony was alive, upon his death she’s compelled to share it with his spirit in the form of a letter. A grief memoir with a paranormal twist, Feeling Fate explores how a dark intuition magnified Sensel’s love and gratitude in the time she and Tony had together before her premonition came true. Faced with evidence of a grand design alongside her grief, she’s torn between faith and skepticism. While she’s nearly undone by the pain of her loss, she eventually discovers that a sassy imagination and the irrational insights of the heart can both defeat despair and transform her grief into meaning.

Data-Driven Personas

release date: Feb 05, 2021
Data-Driven Personas
Data-driven personas are a significant advancement in the fields of human-centered informatics and human-computer interaction. Data-driven personas enhance user understanding by combining the empathy inherent with personas with the rationality inherent in analytics using computational methods. Via the employment of these computational methods, the data-driven persona method permits the use of large-scale user data, which is a novel advancement in persona creation. A common approach for increasing stakeholder engagement about audiences, customers, or users, persona creation remained relatively unchanged for several decades. However, the availability of digital user data, data science algorithms, and easy access to analytics platforms provide avenues and opportunities to enhance personas from often sketchy representations of user segments to precise, actionable, interactive decision-making tools—data-driven personas! Using the data-driven approach, the persona profile can serve as an interface to a fully functional analytics system that can present user representation at various levels of information granularity for more task-aligned user insights. We trace the techniques that have enabled the development of data-driven personas and then conceptually frame how one can leverage data-driven personas as tools for both empathizing with and understanding of users. Presenting a conceptual framework consisting of (a) persona benefits, (b) analytics benefits, and (c) decision-making outcomes, we illustrate applying this framework via practical use cases in areas of system design, digital marketing, and content creation to demonstrate the application of data-driven personas in practical applied situations. We then present an overview of a fully functional data-driven persona system as an example of multi-level information aggregation needed for decision making about users. We demonstrate that data-driven personas systems can provide critical, empathetic, and user understanding functionalities for anyone needing such insights.

Talking Animals

release date: Aug 04, 2020
Talking Animals
"Joni Murphy’s inventive and beautiful allegory depicts a city enmeshed in climate collapse, blinded to the signs of its imminent destruction by petty hatreds and monstrous greed: that is, the world we are living in now. Talking Animals is an Orwellian tale of totalitarianism in action, but the animals on this farm are much cuter, and they make better puns." —Chris Kraus, author of I Love Dick and After Kathy Acker A fable for our times, Joni Murphy’s Talking Animals takes place in an all-animal world where creatures rather like us are forced to deal with an all-too-familiar landscape of soul-crushing jobs, polluted oceans, and a creeping sense of doom. It’s New York City, nowish. Lemurs brew espresso. Birds tend bar. There are bears on Wall Street, and a billionaire racehorse is mayor. Sea creatures are viewed with fear and disgust and there’s chatter about building a wall to keep them out. Alfonzo is a moody alpaca. His friend Mitchell is a sociable llama. They both work at City Hall, but their true passions are noise music and underground politics. Partly to meet girls, partly because the world might be ending, these lowly bureaucrats embark on an unlikely mission to expose the corrupt system that’s destroying the city from within. Their project takes them from the city’s bowels to its extremities, where they encounter the Sea Equality Revolutionary Front, who are either a group of dangerous radicals or an inspiring liberation movement. In this novel, at last, nature kvetches and grieves, while talking animals offer us a kind of solace in the guise of dumb jokes. This is mass extinction as told by BoJack Horseman. This is The Fantastic Mr. Fox journeying through Kafka's Amerika. This is dogs and cats, living together. Talking Animals is an urgent allegory about friendship, art, and the elemental struggle to change one’s life under the low ceiling of capitalism.

Daughter of the Heartland

release date: May 26, 2020
Daughter of the Heartland
Combining the by-the-bootstraps work ethic of Nikki Haley’s Can’t Is Not an Option with the military pluck of MJ Heger’s Shoot Like a Girl, Joni Ernst’s candid memoir details the rise of one of the most inspiring and authentic women in the United States Senate. The daughter of hardworking farmers in the heartland, Joni Ernst has never been afraid to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. Raised in rural Iowa, Joni grew up cleaning stalls, hauling grain, and castrating hogs. Farm life forged her work ethic. She developed grit and tenacity, attributes that would later be put to the test when she faced abuse, sexism, and harassment. First, as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and later as an underdog candidate in the US Senate, Joni has proven to be a natural leader who proudly serves her fellow Americans. She had to learn to believe when others didn’t, to raise her own voice for those who couldn’t, and to silence the naysayers (even herself) to become a bold leader and a fierce advocate. In her inspiring memoir, Joni shares her struggles and the invaluable lessons she learned through hardship—on the farm, in the home, and at work. As a woman fighting for position in the boys’ clubs of the military and politics, she found strength in courage and vulnerability, becoming a role model for women everywhere. As a US Senator, Joni is well-known and respected for her fight to hold Washington accountable and her demand for bipartisanship in a time of fierce tribalism. Daughter of the Heartland tells Joni’s incredible story in four parts, defined by the values she’s learned along the way—leadership, service, courage, and gratitude. Written in an honest and compelling voice, Daughter of the Heartland is Joni’s inspirational story of finding her place as a champion for Iowa, a defender of our armed forces, and a voice for women.

Along the way they learn to ask questions and gain an understanding about their new friend. Told in a charming rhyming style, this colorful, hardcover book will help eliminate fear and misconceptions about those who have special needs and emphasizes that every person deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. Mermaids, Yachts & Rum: Sea of Destiny Series
In my first book of the "Sea of Destiny" series, Breeze, a young girl, from a small seaport town on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, casts herself into the sea and into a passage unknown...the world of yachting. Knowing that she has to expand her horizons, she trusts in herself enough to travel to the Caribbean on a 41 foot sailboat with three strangers and embarks on a career as a chef, stewardess, and first mate on yachts in the Caribbean during the first year and venturing across the Atlantic for the next season following the sun, and sea of adventure. Each yacht brings experiences of a lifetime, some hilarious, romantic, some bitter sweet, and out of control crazy, but every port provides new cultures and foods to embrace, and learn from. Breeze jumps right into the sea as a mermaid would and fears nothing. It's a lunatic's rum tour at times, but sailing and cooking keeps her centered in the craziness of it all. Joni Dennis resides in Beaufort, NC, creating healthy food products and cooking on yachts.

Heaven

Drawing on Scripture, Joni Eareckson Tada answers the deepest questions of our hearts about what heaven will be like, who we will see there, and who we will be there. This updated and expanded edition of Joni’s classic brings a new understanding of what heaven is, along with new mysteries and hopes. Now in her late 60s, Joni is much closer to heaven than she was when she first wrote the book in her mid 40s. And she says, “I will soon—soon!—hear His voice, look into His eyes, and feel His embrace. And He will say, ‘Welcome home, Joni.’” It is from this vantage point that Joni now speaks about how we can live for Jesus as we look forward to our real home. As a quadriplegic for fifty years, Joni has also endured cancer and extreme ongoing pain. She doesn’t speak lightly when she reminds us that, “God knows the precise tools to use in your life to cut, facet, cleanse, and refine the diamond that is your eternal soul…. Every good thing that God has ever given you will last for all eternity—including the best part of every affliction.” At the end of each chapter in this updated book, Joni includes additional reflections that speak to where she is now, higher up on the hill of perspective. She calls these thoughts Climbing Higher, and that’s her invitation to all who make this journey with her.

The Definitive Guide to the Prophetic
"An outstanding presentation of proper use of prophetic ministry..." --Bill Hamon "Every believer will do well to read and heed this strategic book." --Jack Taylor "A solid prophetic voice in the church today." --Roberts Liardon Restoring Prophetic Ministry to Its Rightful Place in God's Church "Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith." (Romans 12:6) Joni Ames provides a Bible-based, clear, concise, and practical explanation of the operation and use of personal prophetic ministry in the church today. Her goal is twofold: first, to act as a teacher and mentor to help people with prophetic gifts understand and mature into those gifts; and second, to help pastors and church leaders understand, acknowledge, discern, and train the prophetic community within their body of believers. Joni also debunks some myths and falsehoods about prophetic ministry, while bringing a greater level of maturity and confidence to those seeking to develop their revelatory gifts.

When Is It Right to Die?

release date: Jan 30, 2018
When Is It Right to Die?
More and more people who are terminally ill are choosing assisted suicide. When is it Right to Die? offers a different path with alternatives of hope, compassion, and death with real dignity. Joni Eareckson Tada knows what it means to wrestle with this issue and to wish for a painless solution. For the last 50 years she has been confined to a wheelchair and struggled against her own paralysis. I Loved You From Afar

release date: Apr 28, 2021
I Loved You From Afar
Early in 2020, no one could have ever imagined that a pandemic would alter life as we know it. Everyday life ground to a halt. Many of the precious things we took for granted were suddenly out of reach. The author of this book became a first-time grandmother in September of 2020. The illustrator's third grandchild was born on the same day. The pandemic has made visiting and holding these infants very difficult-to keep them safe, masks, socially distant visits in the back yard, door visits, and Zoom calls intervened. And in Italian and Greek families, big gatherings are simply what people do! After much soul searching, the author wrote her granddaughter a letter that tried to explain what she was feeling. It made her realize that these feelings were not unique. Many, many babies have been born during this pandemic. Those grandparents-any family members, really-were feeling the same, going through the same emotions. This book is an effort to remind them all that they are not alone. . .and that love prevails even in the most challenging situations. With so much tragedy and sorrow this pandemic has brought to the world, this keepsake volume is a reminder that no obstacle can stand in the way of such a special bond. It touches on the longing of grandparents to hold their newborn grandchildren at a time when that couldn't happen. The illustrations in this book are based on symbols and patterns found in many different cultures throughout the world. They represent positive ideas-unity, harmony, courage, wisdom, strength, love, protection, and happiness, values we all wish for our children, our grandchildren, and the world.

Full Frontal Murder Memoir

release date: Apr 08, 2021
Full Frontal Murder Memoir
Family, murder, and neuroscience collide as this daughter's compelling memoir reveals the untold personal story behind one of the most important and controversial cases in the history of the criminal justice system. The case of Herbert Weinstein, the author's father, started with a shocking murder in 1991 that was blasted across the news media with tabloid-style headlines ("High-rise Horror"). Now, three decades later, it is considered the case that forever changed the courtrooms of America by securing a ruling to allow neuroscience in as evidence when determining a defendant's guilt or innocence. The case has been prominently featured in countless articles, symposiums, and books including the standard legal textbook on law and neuroscience used to educate law students throughout the country. This unique case has literally gone from tabloid to textbook.Joni West looks back at the years prior to the murder to determine whether there had been any signs - surely there must have been something she missed given that her father was 65 years old at the time and she was 29. He had been the very best part of her world until her mother died when Joni was 20. When a new woman entered her father's life just one month after her mother's funeral, Joni started noticing a different side to her father - one that pushed Joni away. It would take an unspeakable crime and decades to unravel the true nature of that side and for Joni to put the pieces of her personal puzzle together. She contrasts her contentious relationship with her mother and the heartwarming one she had with her father and shows how he expertly soothed the emotional wounds her mother inflicted upon her. She weaves together her past, the crime, and what she later learns through years of extensive research to paint a stunning masterpiece depicting how it could all go so very wrong. She exposes the private side of this infamous man that has never been revealed anywhere until now. She leaves the reader with new answers about the crime and better questions to ask themselves when thinking about why people do the things they do.
