All Our Griefs to Bear

release date: Apr 12, 2022
All Our Griefs to Bear
Where do our churches go from here? Church and Christian community look a lot different than they did before the horrors of the coronavirus pandemic, racial trauma, and economic uncertainty revealed difficult truths about the wounds we carry. The damage caused by trauma is deep and affects every part of our lives together. At the same time, the pandemic has upended or called into question many of our traditional ministry models. For those tasked with leading congregations through this disorienting new territory, the challenges are great indeed. Yet God’s people are amazingly resilient. In All Our Griefs to Bear, author Joni S. Sancken builds on her own trauma-aware background and engages leading sociologists and mental health professionals to name some of the largest issues that congregations now face and will face as we process the cascading trauma of our time. Chapters focus on practices such as lament, storytelling, and blessing to help leaders and church members to nurture resilience and compassion. We cannot go back to who we were before. But the church can experience new life and renewal in the wake of trauma as God’s healing and hope move through us into our world.

Satori Moments
Our lives are full of satori moments—powerful snippets of time that, when recognized, invite us to awaken, become aware, be present, and find enlightenment. Through inspiring personal stories and wisdom acquired over time, Joni Kirby teaches us that we do not need to be trained to be. Instead, she encourages us to live as Rylan did—awakened, dancing, and celebrating life in the moment. As she leads others on the satori journey of reawakening, also known as Rylan’s untrainings, she reminds us of who we are deep inside, to love, live, and learn in the moment, to laugh often, to remember that all is well because we are one, to embrace the joy that is always within, to breathe in the space of stillness between thoughts, and to intentionally plant our life’s garden—all while embracing the beauty of life. Satori Moments shares anecdotes and wisdom intended to inspire anyone interested in finding their way back to their true selves and the I-ness within.

Feeling Fate

release date: Apr 26, 2022
Feeling Fate
As her sweetheart’s body lies cooling on the living room floor, Joni Sensel—shattered but not surprised—revisits her premonition about this moment. From nearly the start of their fairy tale romance less than four years ago, she knew she would lose Tony, the man she considered to be her soul mate. He was in great health, but fate had other plans—a hard truth that visited Joni in the form of a startling vision during their second weekend together. Though she kept the premonition a secret while Tony was alive, upon his death she’s compelled to share it with his spirit in the form of a letter. A grief memoir with a paranormal twist, Feeling Fate explores how a dark intuition magnified Sensel’s love and gratitude in the time she and Tony had together before her premonition came true. Faced with evidence of a grand design alongside her grief, she’s torn between faith and skepticism. While she’s nearly undone by the pain of her loss, she eventually discovers that a sassy imagination and the irrational insights of the heart can both defeat despair and transform her grief into meaning.

The Ongoing

release date: Jul 11, 2022
The Ongoing
The Ongoing is Joni Grâce's third work, a collection of poems compiled from her writings over several seasons at a beloved beach house on the shores of Georgian Bay in Ontario, Canada, her travels throughout North America, and additional poems that emerged in 2020-22. Her affinity for nature and for curating the "greening" of both soil and soul permeates her writings and captures the mysteries of ebb and flow that interweave human nature and the natural world. Each poem, standing alone or within the continuum of the collections, is a living, breathing microcosm of the ongoing circle-journey from self to other, and the evolution to new selfness, that makes our personal and collective worlds go meaningfully 'round. The intensity of emotion in her first release, Feeling in the Gap, plumbs her own interiority while sounding herself in both the literal and metaphorical presence of her surroundings. Her second book, Carried Away, a poetic odyssey through the wilds of the inner terrain and the natural world, immerses us in the mists of the inner-outer quest, while seeking the greater gift in relationship with other. The Ongoing expands relationship to encircle and meld with the flora and fauna that she not only observes, but tends throughout-representing a maturation, a wisdoming, of both poet and poetry. Here the deep interiority of Feeling in the Gap and Carried Away seems to have birthed The Ongoing as a tribute to, and proof of, the ever-reclaimable triumph of self rediscovered, even reconstituted, in alchemical relationship with the natural world. __________________________________________________________________ Reviews of THE ONGOING... "This poetry is a soothing balm for the world-weary. Each work brought me back, a little closer, to myself, to nature, to what is and what matters, to greater expansion, to true surrender. It is a beautiful reminder of the oneness of all. It is nourishment for the soul." Ilene Angel, author of How to Calm the Hell Down and Be Happy "Joni Grâce beautifully and 'grace'-fully reminds our hearts and souls of the range and rhythms of the natural world...as well as our own natures. We lay ourselves down in her words, and slowly re-awaken to that profound consonance of the life within and without us. What a joy. What a gift." Arnie Roman, award-winning songwriter and librettist "'What can I move toward? What can I leave behind?' In The Ongoing, Joni Grâce takes the reader on a journey of discovery-an encounter with the inner self and the world's profound beauty-that deepens our sense of mystery and delight." Barbara Thompson, co-author of The Craving Brain - Science, Spirituality and the Road to Recovery "...The Ongoing is proof of what Joni Grâce calls 'greening: ' potential energy nurturing what will soon be an emergence. She uses the plenitude, turbulence and fruit of the natural world to prove the hopeful Truth that...we are all in an 'extravagant movement towards home.'" Elizabeth A. Wilson, author of The Sovereign Way "I have always felt that the mark of a true poet is a willingness to go to the depths and heights to seek and find a truth. Joni's capacity to feel, and to render the seeking and suffering of truth, is matched only by her ability to find its joy, especially through her deep affinity with nature." Terah Cox, author of The Story of Love & Truth, and editor for Feeling in the Gap, Carried Away and The Ongoing

Mixed Agreements as a Technique for Organizing the International Relations of the European Community and its Member States

release date: Aug 30, 2021
Mixed Agreements as a Technique for Organizing the International Relations of the European Community and its Member States
This volume provides the most comprehensive account to date of the foundations, evolution, and nature of the treaty-making practice, known as the practice of mixed agreements, whereby the European Community and its Member States enter into international agreements with one or more other subjects of international law. Covering policy areas from external economic relations to the environment, from development cooperation to the law of the sea, the practice of mixed agreements occupies a highly prominent position in the external relations of the EU. Rather than focusing upon any particular agreement or subject area, the book seeks to identify, through analysis of the respective interests of the Community, the Member States and other parties, as they are reflected in actual practice, the general parameters for the conclusion and application of mixed agreements. The basic thesis defended is that there are mediating strategies whereby mixed agreements can be turned into an effective technique for manifesting the Community's position in external relations whilst nevertheless safeguarding the vital interests of the Member States and the other, non-EC parties. Rather than a `necessary evil', mixed agreements should be regarded as a natural way of organizing the international relations of the EC and its Member States. Of individual treaties, the most thorough examination is made of the Community and the Member States' participation in the Law of the Sea Convention, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), as well as the Agreement establishing the World Trade Organization (WTO). As regards the WTO, for instance, the book offers a comprehensive account of the dispute settlement practice under the GATS and TRIPS Agreements.

Daughter of the Heartland

release date: May 26, 2020
Daughter of the Heartland
Combining the by-the-bootstraps work ethic of Nikki Haley’s Can’t Is Not an Option with the military pluck of MJ Heger’s Shoot Like a Girl, Joni Ernst’s candid memoir details the rise of one of the most inspiring and authentic women in the United States Senate. The daughter of hardworking farmers in the heartland, Joni Ernst has never been afraid to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. Raised in rural Iowa, Joni grew up cleaning stalls, hauling grain, and castrating hogs. Farm life forged her work ethic. She developed grit and tenacity, attributes that would later be put to the test when she faced abuse, sexism, and harassment. First, as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and later as an underdog candidate in the US Senate, Joni has proven to be a natural leader who proudly serves her fellow Americans. She had to learn to believe when others didn’t, to raise her own voice for those who couldn’t, and to silence the naysayers (even herself) to become a bold leader and a fierce advocate. In her inspiring memoir, Joni shares her struggles and the invaluable lessons she learned through hardship—on the farm, in the home, and at work. As a woman fighting for position in the boys’ clubs of the military and politics, she found strength in courage and vulnerability, becoming a role model for women everywhere. As a US Senator, Joni is well-known and respected for her fight to hold Washington accountable and her demand for bipartisanship in a time of fierce tribalism. Daughter of the Heartland tells Joni’s incredible story in four parts, defined by the values she’s learned along the way—leadership, service, courage, and gratitude. Written in an honest and compelling voice, Daughter of the Heartland is Joni’s inspirational story of finding her place as a champion for Iowa, a defender of our armed forces, and a voice for women.

Data-Driven Personas

release date: Feb 05, 2021
Data-Driven Personas
This book traces the techniques that have enabled the development of data-driven personas and how they can be leveraged as tools for empathizing and understanding users. Data-driven personas are a significant advancement in the fields of human-centered informatics and human-computer interaction. Data-driven personas enhance user understanding by combining the empathy inherent with personas with the rationality inherent in analytics using computational methods. Via the employment of these computational methods, the data-driven persona method permits the use of large-scale user data, which is a novel advancement in persona creation. A common approach for increasing stakeholder engagement about audiences, customers, or users, persona creation remained relatively unchanged for several decades. However, the availability of digital user data, data science algorithms, and easy access to analytics platforms provide avenues and opportunities to enhance personas from often sketchy representations of user segments to precise, actionable, interactive decision-making tools—data-driven personas! Using the data-driven approach, the persona profile can serve as an interface to a fully functional analytics system that can present user representation at various levels of information granularity for more task-aligned user insights. Presenting a conceptual framework consisting of (a) persona benefits, (b) analytics benefits, and (c) decision-making outcomes, we illustrate applying this framework via practical use cases in areas of system design, digital marketing, and content creation to demonstrate the application of data-driven personas in practical applied situations. We then present an overview of a fully functional data-driven persona system as an example of multi-level information aggregation needed for decision making about users. We demonstrate that data-driven personas systems can provide critical, empathetic, and user-understanding functionalities for anyone needing such insights.

Talking Animals

release date: Aug 04, 2020
Talking Animals
"Joni Murphy’s inventive and beautiful allegory depicts a city enmeshed in climate collapse, blinded to the signs of its imminent destruction by petty hatreds and monstrous greed: that is, the world we are living in now. Talking Animals is an Orwellian tale of totalitarianism in action, but the animals on this farm are much cuter, and they make better puns." —Chris Kraus, author of I Love Dick and After Kathy Acker A fable for our times, Joni Murphy’s Talking Animals takes place in an all-animal world where creatures rather like us are forced to deal with an all-too-familiar landscape of soul-crushing jobs, polluted oceans, and a creeping sense of doom. It’s New York City, nowish. Lemurs brew espresso. Birds tend bar. There are bears on Wall Street, and a billionaire racehorse is mayor. Sea creatures are viewed with fear and disgust and there’s chatter about building a wall to keep them out. Alfonzo is a moody alpaca. His friend Mitchell is a sociable llama. They both work at City Hall, but their true passions are noise music and underground politics. Partly to meet girls, partly because the world might be ending, these lowly bureaucrats embark on an unlikely mission to expose the corrupt system that’s destroying the city from within. Their project takes them from the city’s bowels to its extremities, where they encounter the Sea Equality Revolutionary Front, who are either a group of dangerous radicals or an inspiring liberation movement. In this novel, at last, nature kvetches and grieves, while talking animals offer us a kind of solace in the guise of dumb jokes. This is mass extinction as told by BoJack Horseman. This is The Fantastic Mr. Fox journeying through Kafka's Amerika. This is dogs and cats, living together. Talking Animals is an urgent allegory about friendship, art, and the elemental struggle to change one’s life under the low ceiling of capitalism.

Heaven
Gain a fresh perspective on heaven from someone who has endured more than her share of earthly challenges for over fifty years--quadriplegia, cancer, and chronic pain. Joni Eareckson Tada's bestseller Heaven has inspired us to live well on earth even as we long for eternity, but as Joni tells us in this updated and expanded edition of Heaven, the longer you journey with your eyes on heaven, the more you begin to see. A quadriplegic for over fifty years, Joni has also endured cancer and extreme ongoing pain, and she doesn't speak lightly when she reminds us that, "God knows the precise tools to use in your life to cut, facet, cleanse, and refine the diamond that is your eternal soul . . . Every good thing that God has ever given you will last for all eternity--including the best part of every affliction." It is from this vantage point that Joni now speaks about how we can live for Jesus as we look forward to our real home in heaven. Drawing on Scripture, Joni answers the deepest questions of our hearts, including: What will heaven be like? Who will we be in heaven? How can we get ready for heaven? Join Joni as she invites you on this journey of looking back on God's faithfulness, discovering how we got to where we are, and looking forward to our real home. Praise for Heaven: "Joni is a friend of mine who has been leading people with love and courage for decades. God uses the most unlikely guides to take us up the rugged terrain in our faith. God's plan is pretty simple. He wants us to spend forever with Him. This life is just practicing for eternity. Will we face difficulties and setbacks? You bet. In this updated book, Joni has taken us once again to the high places, and she's done so from her chair." --Bob Goff, author of the New York Times bestsellers Love Does and Everybody Always

Earth Follies

release date: Mar 21, 2019
Earth Follies
First published in 1993. The question of ‘agency’ is essential to our understanding of environmental problems - who is responsible, and why? Threats such as ozone depletion, global warming and overconsumption are all precipitated by the powerful institutions which shape modern life – institutions which are overwhelmingly controlled by men and dominated by masculine presumptions. Joni Seager argues that the gender bias inherent in western culture is inextricably linked to our environmental crisis. She analyses the traditional institutes of power – governments, the military and transnational corporations - and also takes a critical look at the equally patriarchal environmental establishment, comparing the work of the official environmental movement, grounded in masculine thought, with the smaller-scale, direct actions taken by women driven to protect their homes and communities. Earth Follies represents an incisive and utterly convincing feminist critique of our environmental crises, and offers radical and productive priorities for the environmental agenda.

Gene–Culture Interactions

release date: Feb 07, 2019
Gene–Culture Interactions
Examining the interconnections between genes and culture is crucial for a more complete understanding of psychological processes. Genetic predispositions may predict different outcomes depending on one's cultural context, and culture may predict different outcomes depending on genetic predispositions - that is, genes and culture interact. Less is understood, however, about how genes and culture interact, or the psychological mechanisms through which gene–culture interactions occur. In this Element, Joni Y. Sasaki and Heewon Kwon review key findings and theories in gene–culture interaction research. They then go on to discuss current issues and future directions in gene–culture research that may illuminate the path toward an explanatory framework.

Each yacht brings experiences of a lifetime, some hilarious, romantic, some bitter sweet, and out of control crazy, but every port provides new cultures and foods to embrace, and learn from. Breeze jumps right into the sea as a mermaid would and fears nothing. It's a lunatic's rum tour at times, but sailing and cooking keeps her centered in the craziness of it all.
