He and his army of Catholic conquistadores and cavaliers were in their wanderings in search of gold. They also applied this name to the beautiful and intelligent young queen or princess who ruled the Indians of this and a confederation of neighboring tribes. Despite being greeted with food and gifts, de Soto brazenly pillaged and raided local temples and graves for treasure. René-Robert Cavelier was sent by King Louis XIV to travel south from Canada and sail down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1682 he was the first European to travel the length of the Mississippi. His mission was to explore and establish fur-trade routes along the river. La Salle named the entire Mississippi basin Louisiana, in honor of the King, and claimed it for France on April 9, 1682. Chief Manuelito (Hastiin Chʼil Haajiní) was one of the principal headmen of the Diné Navajo people before, during and after the devastating 1864 "Long Walk" period when they were forced to walk over 300 miles across deserts from northern Arizona to the Bosque Redondo Reservation in New Mexico. Manuelito rallied his nation against the oppression of the United States military. After being relocated to Bosque Redondo, Manuelito was among the leaders who signed the 1868 treaty, ending a period of imprisonment in United States government internment camps and establishing a reservation for the Navajo. Manuelito became an advocate for western education for Navajo children, with his famous quote, "My grandchildren, education is a ladder. Tell our people to take it." He carries it to where Nagaina is threatening to bite little Teddy, while his parents watch helplessly. Nagaina recovers her egg but is pursued by Rikki away from the house to the cobra's underground nest, where an unseen final battle takes place. Rikki emerges triumphant from the hole, declaring Nagaina dead. With the immediate threat defeated, Rikki dedicates his life to guarding the garden, resulting in no snake even daring to enter it.
