From Chicago to Vietnam

release date: Nov 30, 2020
From Chicago to Vietnam
In the early hours of January 31, 1968, eighty-thousand North Vietnamese and Vietcong combat troops attacked every major city and military base in South Vietnam. The perimeter of the massive Saigon Airbase, Tan Son Nhut, was breached, and fighting raged all morning. Both gritty and intimate, From Chicago to Vietnam tells the powerful story of the ensuing epic battle, the Tet Offensive, from the perspective of one brave American soldier, Michael Duffy, whose life, like so many others, would forever be changed. Duffy's war experience begins when he exits a C-130 cargo plane onto the Tan Son Nhut tarmac-a chaotic scene of blasts, explosions, and small arms fire. Sprinting to a waiting helicopter, he is lifted up and over the city, where he gets a bird's-eye view of Saigon under attack. The helicopter lands on a road outside Bien Hoa Base Camp, and Duffy crawls in under enemy fire, tumbling into a fox-hole under cover of two GIs. Later, he meets up with his younger brother, Danny Duffy, in an ammunition convoy driving up Highway 1 to the village of Xuan Loc. After his brutal one-year tour in Vietnam, Duffy returns to Chicago, where he enjoys a Christmas dinner with his family before enrolling as a freshman at Colorado College. Like many vets, his return from the war would be met with curiosity, indifference, and, at times, scorn. This harrowing memoir was thirty years in the making.

World War Noir

release date: Jul 31, 2019
World War Noir
It seems that not even world war could stop crime in Sydney. In fact, World War Noir confirms that war and crime - in the form of sex, drugs, alcohol, racketeering and other illicit activities - go hand in hand. A companion book to the later glory days of the Sydney underworld from Sydney Noir, here Michael Duffy and Nick Hordern tell the story of a time when many Australians were not as patriotic as we have been told. With soldiers' pockets full of cash and the freedom of being on leave, criminal possibilities opened up during World War II. Told from the ground - or the gutter - up, World War Noir is a raw and broad-ranging tale that confounds expectations and reveals a grittier truth.

Sydney Noir

release date: Jun 08, 2017
Sydney Noir
The first ever book devoted entirely to the golden years of the Sydney underworld. In the late 1960s Sydney was one of the most prosperous places on earth and one of the most corrupt. A large proportion of the population was engaged in illegal gambling and other activities that made colourful characters such as Lennie McPherson, Abe Saffron and George Freeman wealthy and, to many, folk heroes. Thousands of American soldiers on their seven-day leave from Vietnam turned Kings Cross, with its strip shows and night clubs, into one big party. The whole corrupt carnival was run by the police in an arrangement known as 'the joke'. They could just about get away with that term because heroin had not yet turned the underworld into the killing machine it would soon become. Two of the main jokers were also lovers: vice queen Shirley Brifman and violent detective Fred Krahe. In Sydney Noir Michael Duffy and Nick Hordern revisit this dark yet fascinating chapter of Sydney's history, telling stories that would be unbelievable were they not true. Finally, they make the bold argument that premier of the time, Sir Robert Askin, may not have been as guilty of corruption as many have claimed.

Bad

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Bad
Strike Force Tuno and this investigation is soon to be the subject of the fifth Underbelly television series, 'Underbelly: Badness'..When Terry Falconer's dismembered body turned up in the Hastings River in 2001, detective Gary Jubelin was given the investigation to lead. Falconer had been a violent criminal, a police informer, and possibly a murderer. The suspect list quickly grew to 70 of the state's most hardened criminals, all of whom had wanted him dead...After a year Jubelin had a name. Anthony Perish believed Falconer had carried out a contract killing on his grandparents back in 1993. Perish was almost unknown to police, but as Jubelin and his team dug deeper, they discovered he was one of Australia's most successful drug manufacturers, with strong links to the Rebels bikie gang and a reputation for violence and professionalism. Only the personal nature of his revenge murder of Falconer had brought him out of the shadows...It took the dozens of detectives involved with Strike Force Tuno a decade to bring Anthony Perish and his brother Andrew to justice. It is an amazing story of what police call serious 'badness', involving many murders, professional killers, protected witnesses, electronic surveillance, underground drug labs, secret hearings conducted by the New South Wales Crime Commission, and over 180,000 recorded phone conversations...Author Michael Duffy was given almost unprecedented access to police force files to write the story of what has been described as one of Australia's most difficult murder investigations and its biggest. The result is a chilling and forensic account of an Australian criminal empire that dwarfs all others and a meticulous and enthralling chronicle of an extraordinary police investigation...

''If The Godfather was set in Sydney today, it would be about the Lebs. But brothers, lots of brothers. Fathers don't matter anymore.' - Detective Inspector Brian Harris'..John Habib is the mechanic son of a Muslim Lebanese-Australian crime family in Sydney's Western suburbs. His oldest brother is in a maximum security prison, his middle brother is becoming increasingly fundamentalist, and his younger brother Rafi is on trial for a murder he swears he didn't commit. John has no reason to disbelieve Rafi but there are things going on in the family that he just doesn't understand. Why has his brother taken control of the family away from their father? Are the police really trying to set up Rafi? And what is the compelling evidence they say will put him away? John sets out to prove Rafi's innocence in the face of his predatory older brothers and some Lebanese-hating cops...Bec Ralston is a good detective who doesn't know why she's been ordered to attend Rafi's trial. She was previously thrown off the investigation for voicing the opinion that Rafi might be innocent. As the court case goes badly wrong, she finds herself torn between her loyalty to the senior police she respects and the truth...Not since Peter Temple's 'The Broken Shore' and 'Truth' has the world of criminals and police been so uncompromisingly and authentically drawn. This brilliant, fast-paced novel will seize you from its first page and not let you go till long after its explosive, mind-twisting conclusion...'Duffy is indisputably a writer to watch. He will soon be ranked alongside the likes of international behemoths Michael Connolly, George Pelecanos and Don Winslow. There is no higher praise.' 'Sydney Morning Herald'

The Presidents Club

release date: Apr 17, 2012
The Presidents Club
The Presidents Club, established at Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration by Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover, is a complicated place: its members are bound forever by the experience of the Oval Office and yet are eternal rivals for history’s favor. Among their secrets: How Jack Kennedy tried to blame Ike for the Bay of Pigs. How Ike quietly helped Reagan win his first race in 1966. How Richard Nixon conspired with Lyndon Johnson to get elected and then betrayed him. How Jerry Ford and Jimmy Carter turned a deep enmity into an alliance. The unspoken pact between a father and son named Bush. And the roots of the rivalry between Clinton and Barack Obama. Time magazine editors and presidential historians Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy offer a new and revealing lens on the American presidency, exploring the club as a hidden instrument of power that has changed the course of history.

Witness to Medjugorje

release date: Mar 24, 2016
Witness to Medjugorje
The First Apparitions to Medjugorje. It is said by millions of pilgrims who have visited Medjugorje, that it is one of the most special and peaceful places in the entire world. It is known as the land of peace, for the reason that Our Lady, Queen of Peace first appeared there on the 24th of June 1981. Dissimilar to Lourdes or Fatima, the Blessed Mother continues to appear there ever since. A Roman Catholic parish in former Yugoslavia, Medjugorje is a town land located in Herzegovina, a region of Bosnia and is close to the border of Croatia. The name Medjugorje literally means "between mountains." It is a place of prayer, fruits and graces that draws people to our Holy Mother's embrace. Not knowing what to expect on my first visit to Medjugorje, however when I enter the church I was overwhelmed when Padre Pio appeared to me on the tabernacle. And then to witness the beautiful smile of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace. It was from then on Jesus Christ Our Saviour was to enter my life. I had many life changing experiences, in the form of many physical healing, peace and tranquillity. By God's blessing, I have received the fruits and blessings of Medjugorje and I have been living there since 2010. I dedicate this book to the Holy Trinity, and to Our Lady Queen of Peace, and my upmost gratitude to those who have helped me in my hour of need. Also to those who are lost in faith, to those who are ill, to those who are the sufferers of Alcohol and Drug addiction, and to those who have lost their lives through suicide, and to their families they have left behind.
