Carlisle charts the city''s emergence as an urban centre under the Romans and traces its vicissitudes over subsequent centuries until the high Middle Ages. Arguably, the most important theme that differentiates its development from many other towns is its position as a ''border'' city. The characteristics of the landscape surrounding Carlisle gave it special significance as a front-line element in the defence of the Roman province of Britannia and later at the frontier of two emerging kingdoms, England and Scotland. In both cases, it occupied the only overland route in the west between these two kingdoms, emphasising the importance of understanding its landscape setting. This volume sheds light on the processes of urbanization under the Romans beginning with a fort, developing into a major nodal hub, and ending as the capital city of the local tribe, the Carvetii. The story continues with the collapse of Roman rule and the city’s re-emergence first as a monastic centre, then as a proto-town in the period of Anglo-Scandinavian settlement. Finally, the Norman Conquest confirmed Carlisle’s importance with the establishment of a castle, a diocese, and an Augustinian Priory, as well as the granting of specific rights to the citizens. Carlisle uses a combination of archaeological discoveries and historical data to explore the history and legacy of this fascinating city.

He needn''t have worried. By 1967, he was flying his F-4 Phantom II fighter with the U.S. Air Force''s 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, also known as Satan''s Angels. Before his tour ended, McCarthy completed 124 missions during the intense air war over North Vietnam and Laos and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross. His memoir recreates the horror and exhilaration of air combat.

In the early 1980s the author was asked to investigate the newly discovered wreck of the Xantho, an iron screw steamship active off the Australian coast during the period 1848 to 1872, and to develop a strategy to stop the looting that was occurring at the site. This relatively straightforward assignment turned into a long-term research program for applying maritime archaeology to the conservation of iron-hulled wrecks.

A History of the Sawmills and Tramways of Warburton, Big Pat''s Creek and the Upper Yarra Valley

Salute to the Hudswells tells the story of the 41 Hudswell Clarke locomotives used on the 2ft gauge sugar cane railways of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co Ltd in Queensland and Fiji between 1911 and 1976. 34 were of the classic 0-6-0 tender type of which examples are preserved in working order in Australia, England and the USA. Also included are the prototype 0-6-0T type, the 4-4-0 passenger locomotive of Fiji''s ''Free Train'', the Fijian 0-4-0ST wharf shunter (also preserved), and some pioneering 0-6-0 internal-combustion machines. The book gives an outline history of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company and its sugar mills in Australia and Fiji which largely relied on narrow gauge railways for the transport of cane from the field to the mill and in some cases raw sugar from the mill to the port.A focus is the last ten years of operation of the Hudswells at the Victoria and Macknade mills in north Queensland where author Ian Stocks worked in rail and transport operations, with 2 million tonnes of cane hauled in a six month period each crushing season. Ian arranged for the preservation of the remaining locomotives when steam finally came to an end after the 1976 crushing season. Lastly, details are given of the Hudswells that survive in preservation.
