Migration, Prostitution, and Human Trafficking
Migration, Prostitution, and Human Trafficking examines the nature, magnitude, and gravity of prostitution and sex trafficking—and the relationship between them—in contemporary China. By researching the backgrounds, circumstances, and other factors that drive Chinese women to migrate to Shenzhen, China, Liu hopes to shed light on the underlying reasons for their entry into the sex industry. She details Chinese legislation and governmental practices for dealing with human trafficking and prostitution. Liu argues that the Chinese government is not aware of the severity of this problem due to lack of information. The author begins by examining the historical roots of prostitution in China and provides the theoretical framework and historical background for the topic. She then explores the methodology of the study conducted—in-depth interviews, statistics, government documents, and personal observation. Data collected examines the lives of individual women before they became involved in prostitution and after. And finally, she discusses prostitution laws in China and draws conclusions about motivations for human trafficking—both from the perspective of the trafficker and the victim. This imaginative effort provides a comprehensive look at Chinese migrant women in Shenzhen, China, and how they have become involved in prostitution and human trafficking. It is the author’s hope that increased awareness will lead to legislation that will stop this kind of exploitation. Prostitution is a global issue; its special dimensions in an expanding, market-driven economy encased in a communist political system are explored with candor and understanding. Liu deals with inherited issues and current practices in an entirely unique manner.

Effects of Two High-Frequency Physical Therapy Programs on Balance, Gait, Fatigue, and Quality of Life in People with Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease involving the inflammation and demyelination in both brain and spinal cord. MS typically affects people in early adulthood in the range of 20-40 years old, and most patients with MS experience symptoms on a daily basis, such as walking difficulties, balance impairment, and fatigue, which can be disabling and impact the Quality of Life (QOL). The main purpose of this investigation is to determine if our novel, adaptive, high-frequency physical therapy protocol, compared with the conventional therapeutic exercise protocol, has the potential to improve participants’ dynamic balance, gait, fatigue, and overall QOL based on clinical measurement scales. After the completion of this investigation, we found that both types of protocols with the same high dosage improved the balance, gait, fatigue, and QOL in people with MS similarly in a clinically relevant manner. Our results provide evidence that a high-frequency physical therapy intervention consisting of twice per day and five days per week sessions may be an important parameter for improving balance, gait, fatigue, and QOL in people with MS.

Evaluation for VOF Simulation of Flow Field in Asphalt Foaming Chamber Based on Volume Fraction

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Evaluation for VOF Simulation of Flow Field in Asphalt Foaming Chamber Based on Volume Fraction
Asphalt with high viscosity, air, and water constitutes multi-phase turbulent flow accompanied by complex dynamic phenomena such as heat transfer and phase transition in the foaming chamber during the asphalt foaming process. The foaming process is difficult to fully describe by mathematical model. In order to establish the correspondence between the approximate simulation flow field in the foaming chamber and the physical experiment, it is necessary to propose a reasonable evaluation method for the flow field simulation in the foaming chamber. Approximate numerical expression of asphalt foaming process is established by the volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase flow calculation method combined with self-defined phase and mass transfer functions. Based on the principle of asphalt foaming, effective foaming area is defined as the area where temperature is =100°C, volume fraction of asphalt is =0.5, and volume fraction of water vapor is between 0.1 and 0.4. The ratio of the effective foaming area to the total flow field is taken as the evaluation index. The proportion of effective foaming area obtained by asphalt foaming numerical simulation is compared with the expansion rate and half-life obtained by asphalt foaming experiments with three foaming chambers of different sizes. The comparison shows that ratio of effective foaming area has the same tendency as expansion rate and half-life. And the simulation evaluation index is verified. Suggestions are put forward on the structure design of asphalt foaming chamber based on the distribution of effective foaming area. It shows that this method achieves rapid theoretical evaluation of foaming chamber structure and could be used for the optimal design of foaming chamber.

Microstructure Evolution and Impedance Analysis of 7YSZ Thermal Barrier Coating During Gas Thermal-Shock

Microstructure Evolution and Impedance Analysis of 7YSZ Thermal Barrier Coating During Gas Thermal-Shock
A gas thermal-shock experiment of thermal barrier coating was carried out in air up to 1,250C in order to simulate the thermal cycling process of the engine blades during the start heating and shut cooling. The growth of thermal growth oxide (TGO) layer and microstructure evolution of YSZ layer during thermal cycling process were investigated systematically by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy testing and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the thickness of TGO layer increases when increasing the frequency of thermal cycling, and the impedance response of middle frequencies is more and more remarkable. Meanwhile, initiation and growth of microcracks occur in YSZ layer during the gas thermal-shock experiment. The corresponding impedance characterization of YSZ layer after 100 cycles is similar to the as-sprayed sample, indicating that the YSZ microcracks could heal in a short time when sintered at high temperature. But after 300 cycles, the impedance spectroscopy of YSZ layer is quite different from the as-sprayed sample, with the corresponding impedance of YSZ grain boundary becoming more and more remarkable when prolonging the thermal-shock times, indicating that unhealing microcracks form in the YSZ layer, which may be the main reason to induce the failure of YSZ layer.

Application and Conversion of Soybean Hulls

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Application and Conversion of Soybean Hulls
Soybean is one of the most cultivated crops in the world, with a global production of approximately 240 million tons, generating about 18-20 million tons of hulls, the major by-product of soy industry. The chemical composition of soybean hulls depends on the efficiency of the dehulling process, and so, the soybean hulls may contain variable amounts of cellulose (29-51%), hemicelluloses (10-25%), lignin (1-4%), pectins (4-8%), proteins (11-15%), and minor extractives. This chapter provides a review on the composition and structure of soybean hulls, especially in regard to the application and conversion of the compositions. Current applications of soybean hulls are utilizations to animal feed, treatment of wastewater, dietary fiber, and herbal medicine. The conversion of soybean hulls is concerned with ethanol production, bio-oil, polysaccharides, microfibrils, peroxidase, and oligopeptides. On the basis of the relevant findings, we recommend the use of soybean hulls as important source on environment, energy, animal breeding, materials, chemicals, medicine, and food.

Investigating the Relationships Between a Reading Test and Can-do Statements of Performance on Reading Tasks

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Investigating the Relationships Between a Reading Test and Can-do Statements of Performance on Reading Tasks
One of the fundamental problems in language testing is the lack of adequate generalizability between what a test is measuring and what fulfills the learners'' real world language use needs. It is important to recognize that no matter how precise a test measures a construct, if the way that a construct is defined and the way that test tasks are specified do not correspond to the domain of generalization in a meaningful way, test scores may never become adequate indicators of what learners can do with English in real life. This study investigated constructs and tasks of the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) high-intermediate reading test to explicate the issues involved in generalizing test scores to non-test situations. The study identified and demonstrated quantitatively and qualitatively the way and extent to which two distinct ways of conceptualizing reading constructs, the trait/curriculum-based and the task/domain-based approaches, could lead to divergent construct specifications, difficulty levels, item/text characteristics, and underlying factor structures, using approaches of expert judgments and confirmatory factor analysis. A total of 242 university students and six trained raters participated in the study. All the participants took the GEPT reading test and a task-based reading test developed based on the can-do statements in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and its designated Target Language Use (TLU) domains. It was found that when items are more task-based and workplace specific, the less similarity they share with trait/curriculum based test items. The nature and the constituents of the reading comprehension construct shift. Not only do task-based and workplace specific items require a significantly higher amount of complex propositional content to be interpreted rather than recognized, they also demand a wider range and extent of language abilities (ideational, functional, and sociolinguistic) and strategic competence when making such interpretations in relation to context. Among all the combinations of language abilities, that of manipulative function and strategic demand appear to have the most effect on the complexity of reading construct. The ability to comprehend texts then is different from the ability to comprehend texts in context. The very nature of contextualization changes the nature and constituents of the comprehension construct. Using Bachman and Palmer''s (2010) Assessment Use Argument (AUA) framework, this study strongly suggests that the GEPT is not as meaningful or generalizable as the Language Training and Testing Center (LTTC) claims it is. GEPT test scores do not provide stakeholders with sufficient information about the ability to be assessed in the TLU domain, and the GEPT tasks do not have a sufficient degree of correspondence to the TLU tasks. Due to inadequate sampling of the target constructs and its task characteristics, GEPT test scores do not appear to generalize to performance in the target domain.

Development of Methods for the Analysis of Protein Post-translational Modifications

Development of Methods for the Analysis of Protein Post-translational Modifications
Analysis of protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs) plays pivotal roles for the understanding of their biological importance. Isoaspartic acid (isoAsp) as the smallest PTM is observed "in vivo" and "in vitro". No mass difference and subtle difference in physiochemical property between isoAsp and Asp pose a great challenging for sensitive detection and ambiguous location of isoAsp site in complex samples. A novel assay of isoAsp by exploiting methylation specificity of protein isoaspartate methyltransferase (PIMT) at isoAsp and subsequent 18O-incorporation during methyl ester hydrolysis is presented for sensitive detection and unambiguous site location of several isoAsp residues in IgG1 ("Anal Chem" 2012, 84, 1056-1062). The method can be applied to biological samples to understand the isoAsp process and identify biomarkers. Ubiquitous protein crosslinks in biological systems and biopharmaceuticals are reported to result in loss of bioactivity and immunogenicity, but their characterization is poor, especially when the crosslink chemistry is undefined, due to their intrinsic structural complexity and a lack of a systematic analytical approach. A comprehensive methodology, XChem-Finder, has been developed to break down the analytical challenge via 18O labeling and mass spectrometry, leading to the discovery of a total of 14 cross-linked thioether peptides in IgG2, including those that have not been previously reported ("Anal Chem" 2013, 85, 5900-5908). Furthermore, a novel Histidine-Histidine (His-His) crosslink in IgG1 was successfully discovered and characterized via our XChem-Finder ("Anal Chem" 2014, 86, 4940-4948). This again demonstrates the broad applicability and utility of our XChem-Finder. The further improvement of XChem-Finder is discussed. The discovery of more novel crosslinks in protein by XChem-Finder will be successful without any doubt.
