Climate finance in the agriculture and land use sector – Global and regional trends between 2000 and 2018
Climate finance is a fundamental element of the global development agenda and has been accelerating in recent years. Yet between 2000 and 2018 the share of global climate finance in the agriculture and land-use sector has decreased, passing from an average of 45 percent of the total flows at the beginning of the millennium, to 24 percent in 2013 where it has since stayed. The total sum of contributions to the agriculture and land-use sector between 2000 and 2018 amounted to USD 122 billion, representing 26 percent of the global climate finance flows to all sectors. This report aims to increase the understanding of the climate finance trends in the agriculture and land-use sector at the global and regional scales, providing insights for UN agencies, international finance institutions, national governments of both donor and recipient countries, and governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. By looking at the main features of climate finance, including the source and geographical destination of resources, climate objectives, and gender sensitivity, the analysis establishes the key trends in the agriculture and land-use sector in the period 2000- 2018. In addition, it identifies gaps that may affect the stagnated trend relative to other sectors. This study focuses on the quantitative analysis of data available in the climate-related development finance database of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC). The further qualitative analysis could build on this work to research the different trends that influence climate finance distribution.

YHWH Is There

YHWH Is There
How do we make sense of Ezekiel 40–48? Ezekiel’s temple vision has long mystified Bible readers and scholars. Is this a temple that is going to be built in the future? Or is this merely symbolic? Why so many details? Is there any relevance to this section of the Old Testament at all? This book addresses these important questions, showing how Ezekiel’s temple is more than just symbolic. Yet its ultimate fulfillment is not in any physical building, but, according to the New Testament, in Jesus and the new heavens and new earth. Not only will this book illuminate Ezekiel 40–48 for you, it will also help you understand important issues of interpretation in our day, such as typology, the role of the temple in biblical theology, and the New Testament use of the Old Testament. You will learn that yes, in fact, Ezekiel 40–48 is very relevant to the Bible’s storyline.

Globalization in World History

Globalization in World History
In this third edition of Globalization in World History, Peter Stearns explores the roots of contemporary globalization, examining shifts in the global flow of people, goods, and ideas as early as 1000 CE. Exploring how four moments in history have accelerated the process of globalization, Stearns’s narrative details how factors such as economics, migration, disease transmission, culture, the environment, and politics have influenced the nature of globalization as we understand it today. This revised edition includes: Updates to the whole study with appropriate recent references; New brief transition sections that focus attention on the Mongol period, debates over the role of the eighteenth century, and the partial retreat from globalization after World War I; A new final chapter that deals with the rise in attacks on globalization during the most recent decade, from populist objections to the implications of growing authoritarianism, raising the question of whether a new transition is taking shape around us today. Through an interdisciplinary approach that links political, sociological, and historical perspectives, Stearns provides a comprehensive overview of globalization and the historical factors that have shaped it. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of world history, economic history, and political economy.

Shame

release date: Sep 11, 2017
Shame
Shame varies as an individual experience and its manifestations across time and cultures. Groups establish identity and enforce social behaviors through shame and shaming, while attempts at shaming often provoke a social or political backlash. Yet historians often neglect shame ''s power to complicate individual, international, cultural, and political relationships. Peter N. Stearns draws on his long career as a historian of emotions to provide the foundational text on shame ''s history and how this history contributes to contemporary issues around the emotion. Summarizing current research, Stearns unpacks the major debates that surround this complex emotion. He also surveys the changing role of shame in the United States from the nineteenth century to today, including shame ''s revival as a force in the 1960s and its place in today ''s social media. Looking ahead, Stearns maps the abundant opportunities for future historical research and historically informed interdisciplinary scholarship. Written for interested readers and scholars alike, Shame combines significant new research with a wider synthesis.

Proceedings of the International Conference on Business and Management Dynamics 2016: Sustainable economies in the information economy

release date: Dec 31, 2016
Proceedings of the International Conference on Business and Management Dynamics 2016: Sustainable economies in the information economy
Cape Town, South Africa, 7 Sept. 2016 – 8 Sept. 2016. Theme: Sustainable economies in the information economy. Purpose: To share the quality academic papers presented at the International Conference on Business and Management Dynamics (ICBMD) held from 7 to 8 September 2016 at African Pride Crystal Hotel and Spa in Cape Town. As grey literature, the proceedings are the contributions made by researchers at the conference and are considered the written record of the work that was presented to fellow conference delegates. Methodology: The methodology used varies from researcher to researcher but are suitable for the studies conducted. Thus, on the one hand, studies that were subjective in nature used the interpretive paradigm, where the qualitative approach adopted made used of the interview method to collect data. On the other hand, studies that were objectively inclined adopted the positivist philosophy and used survey questionnaires to collect data. However, there were some academic papers which used mixed methodology because of the nature of the study. Whatever methodology used adhered to the ethos of the philosophies underpinning the methodology. Contribution made to scholarship: The articles come from individual researchers and each article in the proceedings is unique. Mostly, there is no general argument leading from one contribution to the next. However, it is interesting to note that in the area of economic performance it was evident that real exchange rate and net foreign direct investment contribute more towards innovations in economic growth. With regard to human capital development, papers presented evidence that there exists a definite need to explore the phenomenon of personal branding as limited scientific academic research has been done within the field of personal branding or on elements of the topic. Thus, the outcome argues that personal branding has an influence on leadership style which in turn impacts on organisational performance and related hygiene factors. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that current methods or strategies for enforcing institutionalisation of knowledge sharing within an organisation have not been successful, and, as such, new strategies are needed to reinforce efforts to nurture and invigorate the institutionalisation of knowledge sharing within an organisation. With regard to technology and big data impact on organisational performance, it was evident that system performance, memory consumption and CPU utilisation can be used as criteria to compare and evaluate big data technologies to improve organisational performance. Most of the articles’ contribution reemphasised technology education and training as a means of digitising business and improving effectiveness. Target audience: The target readership is academic researchers and business leaders who require access to the latest developments in the fields of economics, information management, business, education, development studies, social sciences and technology. It is also for policymakers and other stakeholders who need a better understanding of the impact of new developments on existing policies and regulations for their review or amendment.

Alexander the Great

release date: Jun 21, 2016
Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great: Beyond the Divide, by Charles N. Pope not only “cuts the Gordian Knot” of Alexander research, but also unveils Alexander as the primary inspiration for Christ. Alexander was such a towering figure that at least some influence on emerging Christianity would be expected. However, upon closer inspection the parallels between Alexander and Jesus turn out to be both extensive and profound. Alexander the Great''s birth had been "immaculately conceived" and then "celestially announced." He was a precocious youth that confounded his elders. He railed against conventional thinking (orthodoxy) and was revered everywhere, except by his own family and home town. His campaign began with a wedding. He cast out demons and was accused of having a demon. He fed the multitudes and spoke in parables. He was particularly fond of the mustard seed. He traveled incessantly. He prayed for those that spitefully used him. He walked on water and calmed the tempest. He was warned against entering his capital, but approached his prophesized demise with eager resolve. He was lifted up into the "heavens" and also descended to the "underworld." His higher calling was to attain a faraway kingdom, and one that could only be gained through a symbolic death and ascension. He comforted and later appeared to his followers. He moved mountains and enveloped those who believed in him from the onslaught of the godless. And the comparisons go on.

The real success of Indian democracy is being attributed to its social responsiveness towards all of its citizens. Nevertheless, in the endeavour of sustaining a true and vibrant democracy, the country strives very hard to extent the facilities and benefits to all strata of the society due to its constrained resources. Therefore, the Government of India needs a helping hand from corporate sector to ensure better standard of living of its people. In this regard, the corporate India is expected to play a constructive role by undertaking activities which may ultimately lead to social rejuvenation, development and empowerment of unprivileged people. If this happens, India is very proud to be one of the countries in the world to attain real inclusive growth. Hence, it is felt that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities of companies are really a key to unlock both economic and social disparities, which in turn, benefits the person in the last mile. Moreover, the Companies Act, 2013 has directed corporate India to work towards a growth based socio-economic-environment development model. The present book is an attempt to provide the emerging trends and best practices in CSR implementation, models of partnership, managerial and organizational challenges and issues in monitoring and evaluation of projects related to CSR in the public and private sector. I thank all paper contributors for their continued support, encouragement, inspiration to complete this task. Without their help it will be difficult task for me to complete this volume. Dr. M. The Linearization Method for Constrained Optimization

release date: Dec 06, 2012
The Linearization Method for Constrained Optimization
Techniques of optimization are applied in many problems in economics, automatic control, engineering, etc. and a wealth of literature is devoted to this subject. The first computer applications involved linear programming problems with simp- le structure and comparatively uncomplicated nonlinear pro- blems: These could be solved readily with the computational power of existing machines, more than 20 years ago. Problems of increasing size and nonlinear complexity made it necessa- ry to develop a complete new arsenal of methods for obtai- ning numerical results in a reasonable time. The lineariza- tion method is one of the fruits of this research of the last 20 years. It is closely related to Newton''s method for solving systems of linear equations, to penalty function me- thods and to methods of nondifferentiable optimization. It requires the efficient solution of quadratic programming problems and this leads to a connection with conjugate gra- dient methods and variable metrics. This book, written by one of the leading specialists of optimization theory, sets out to provide - for a wide readership including engineers, economists and optimization specialists, from graduate student level on - a brief yet quite complete exposition of this most effective method of solution of optimization problems.

The Latin American Literary Boom and U.S. Nationalism During the Cold War

The Latin American Literary Boom and U.S. Nationalism During the Cold War
During the 1960s and 1970s, when writers such as Julio Cortazar, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Mario Vargas Llosa entered the international literary mainstream, Cold War cultural politics played an active role in disseminating their work in the United States. Deborah Cohn documents how U.S. universities, book and journal publishers, philanthropic organizations, cultural centers, and authors coordinated their efforts to bring Latin American literature to a U.S. reading public during this period, when interest in the region was heightened by the Cuban Revolution. She also traces the connections between the endeavors of private organizations and official foreign policy goals. The high level of interest in Latin America paradoxically led the U.S. government to restrict these authors'' physical presence in the United States through the McCarran-Walter Act''s immigration blacklist, even as cultural organizations cultivated the exchange of ideas with writers and sought to market translations of their work for the U.S. market.

The Life and Teachings of Jesus

release date: Aug 05, 2019
The Life and Teachings of Jesus
Most people are interested in the life of Jesus, especially the childhood years. This detailed biography of Jesus is from the fourth book of Urantia. Fact or fiction, the reader, decides, but it is a dramatic narration - readable, warm, and most impressive when speculating of the source of the material. The exact circumstances of the origin of The Urantia Book are unknown. The book and its publishers do not name a human author. Instead, it is written as if directly presented by numerous celestial beings appointed to the task of providing an "epochal" religious revelation. As early as 1911, William S. Sadler and his wife Lena Sadler, physicians in Chicago and well known in the community, are said to have been approached by a neighbor who was concerned because she would occasionally find her husband in a deep sleep and breathing abnormally. She reported that she was unable to wake him at these times. The Sadlers came to observe the episodes, and over time, the individual produced verbal communications that claimed to be from "student visitor" spiritual beings. This changed sometime in early 1925 with a "voluminous handwritten document," which from then on became the usual method of purported communication. The individual was never identified publicly but has been described as "a hard-boiled businessman, member of the board of trade and stock exchange."

Modern Mathematical Statistics with Applications

release date: Dec 07, 2011
Modern Mathematical Statistics with Applications
Modern Mathematical Statistics with Applications, Second Edition strikes a balance between mathematical foundations and statistical practice. In keeping with the recommendation that every math student should study statistics and probability with an emphasis on data analysis, accomplished authors Jay Devore and Kenneth Berk make statistical concepts and methods clear and relevant through careful explanations and a broad range of applications involving real data. The main focus of the book is on presenting and illustrating methods of inferential statistics that are useful in research. It begins with a chapter on descriptive statistics that immediately exposes the reader to real data. The next six chapters develop the probability material that bridges the gap between descriptive and inferential statistics. Point estimation, inferences based on statistical intervals, and hypothesis testing are then introduced in the next three chapters. The remainder of the book explores the use of this methodology in a variety of more complex settings. This edition includes a plethora of new exercises, a number of which are similar to what would be encountered on the actuarial exams that cover probability and statistics. Representative applications include investigating whether the average tip percentage in a particular restaurant exceeds the standard 15%, considering whether the flavor and aroma of Champagne are affected by bottle temperature or type of pour, modeling the relationship between college graduation rate and average SAT score, and assessing the likelihood of O-ring failure in space shuttle launches as related to launch temperature.

Liberia-America's Footprint in Africa
The history of Liberia and the United States are closely tied together, but few people have taken the necessary steps to understand the complicated relationship between the two countries. Liberia: America''s Footprint in Africa traces the history of an African nation whose fate is closely tied to an uprising of slaves that began on the island that is now Haiti. The violence there caused people in the United States to wonder about the future of slavery and blacks in their own nation. In this detailed history written by a Liberian educator, you''ll discover: how the American Colonization Society played a critical role in the creation of Liberia; how courageous blacks living in the United States persevered in seeking freedom; how Liberia is culturally, socially, and politically connected to the United States. Discover the rich history of two nations and why Liberia remains relevant today. Enriched with interviews of scholars, Liberian community elders and detailed research, Liberia: America''s Footprint in Africa is a step-by-step account of an overlooked country.
