Mobile Communications

release date: Nov 01, 2009
Mobile Communications
The mobile phone has achieved a global presence faster than any other form of information and communication technology. A global multi-billion dollar industry, this small, mundane device is now an intrinsic part of our everyday life. This communications medium has had an immense social and cultural impact and continues to evolve. Talking, texting, photographing, videoing, connecting to a network of other media - the cellphone now seems essential. But, beyond the ways in which it has actively restructured our daily lives, the mobile has changed our sense of ourselves and the way we see the world. The relationship between public and private space, how we view time and space, how we rely on and negotiate social networks - all are increasingly centred on this small piece of technology. Mobile Communications presents a succinct, challenging, and accessible overview of the transformations and challenges presented by this most personal, yet most overlooked technology.

Wireless World

release date: Jan 01, 2002
Wireless World
Despite the massive growth of mobile technologies, very little research has been done on how these technologies influence human interaction. Most of the published work in this area focuses on technological aspects and not on the social implications the technology is having on society. This book aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of these issues. It identifies the major trends, discusses the main claims made about the mobile age, and looks at issues which affect design, usability and evaluation. This unique look at the mobile age provides many interesting and important insights and will appeal to anyone designing, testing, or studying mobile devices.

The Gift of Your Wounds

The Gift of Your Wounds
Have you ever felt like you don't belong or that there is something inherently wrong with you? Have you ever tried to hide who you are to fit in a world that otherwise leaves you feeling unwanted, flawed and alone? That was me for much of my life.I grew up in a time of racial intolerance. Not only was I one of only three black kids in my school but I also had dyslexia and learning difficulties; there were no special educational needs for girls like me. It wasn't safe to stand out, and certainly not for the wrong reasons. Yet there I was, unable to hide and desperate to fit in.My spiritual gifts were like some big, dirty secret, safely hidden behind closed doors until I shut them off completely. I pushed my dreams aside: who was I to think I could want more for myself and my life?! I rescued others and abandoned myself, not feeling worthy of love, or important enough to put my wants and needs first. I know if you're reading this you may feel resonance with my words. Your story may be different but your feelings the same. So many of us have walked through life a shadow of our true self, desiring to be accepted for who we really are yet too afraid to be seen. We learnt to stop trusting ourselves and the nudges of our intuition, instead placing our happiness, security and wellbeing in the hands of others. We learnt to value other people's opinions above our deeper truths. As we grew older and our egoic mind grew louder, the whispers of our soul fell silent. We settled. We forgot who we were. And we let our light dim, for fear of blinding others. No more. Over the next eight chapters, I will take you on a journey as you reclaim your power, reignite your dreams and shine your light so brightly that it blazes a trail for others to follow. I will share the darkest moments that lead to reawakening my greatest gifts, enabling me to step fully into the person I was born to be.You came into this world with a purpose. You incarnated at this time for a reason. Now, if you're ready and willing, it's time to lift the veil, shed the beliefs and conditioning that have bound you, and share your true essence with the world.
