HARD KNOX

release date: Sep 23, 2014
HARD KNOX
From NEW YORK TIMES and USATODAY Bestselling author Nicole Williams . . . Knox Jagger. The name inspires resentment in every male at Sinclair University, want in every female, and contempt in Charlie Chase. Charlie can be summed up in three words: independent, independent, and independent. To Charlie, Knox epitomizes everything that’s wrong with college males: prolific one-night stands, drunken senseless fights, and a body that hints at prioritizing gym time over study time. As an up-and-coming writer for Sinclair University’s newspaper, Charlie’s tasked with getting to the bottom of who’s been dropping little white pills into girls’ drinks at parties. In an ocean of All-American boys sporting polo shirts and innocent smiles, Knox is the obvious suspect. As evidence piles up against the bad boy of Sinclair, Charlie becomes more and more certain it isn’t Knox. But when her drink is dosed at a party and she wakes up on Knox’s couch the next morning, Charlie’s left with more questions than answers when it comes to Knox Jagger. How can Charlie ever hope to uncover the truth behind a guy so closed off he’s become . . . Hard Knox. ***Hard Knox is the first book in The Outsider Chronicles, although each book that follows will highlight different couples and each can be read as a stand-alone.***

Crossing Stars

Crossing Stars
***From New York Times and USATODAY best-selling author Nicole Williams, a modern spin on a classic story.*** While the city of Chicago sleeps, a war wages in the streets between two powerful families. While the public assumes organized crime is nothing more than a chapter torn out of America’s history, the Costa and Moran families battle for territory and domination. Caught up in the middle of this sinister world is Josette, the only child of Salvatore Costa, the ringleader and notorious godfather of Chicago’s Italian mafia. After the Irish Morans attempted to assassinate her when she was a child, Josette’s parents hid her behind the walls of their sprawling estate and kept her contact with outsiders to a minimum. But now Josette’s eighteen, and she’s questioning if a long life behind walls is worth trading for a potentially short one filled with excitement and adventure and all the things she’s only lived in her dreams. On the night she decides to risk becoming just an anonymous face in the crowd, Josette realizes that death isn’t only a possibility—it’s a certainty. Yet when a young man comes to her rescue, the turbulent waters between life and death are further muddied. Rylan is everything Josette isn’t . . . and she’s everything he isn’t. She’s sheltered; he’s worldly. She’s thoughtful; he’s hot-headed. She’s sweet; he’s rough around the edges. She’s harmless; he’s dangerous. Despite all of their differences, one overshadows them all. One difference means they can never be together unless they’re ready to accept being hunted by the entire crime world for as long as they live. She's a Costa. And he's a Moran.

As the San Diego Shock’s newest athletic trainer, Allie knows all about long hours, endless travel, and warding off players’ advances. Given she’s already the subject of a handful of rumors about how “lucky” she was to have earned such a coveted position, she can’t so much as flutter an eyelash a player’s way if she wants to be taken seriously. But number eleven is doing more than fluttering eyelashes Allie’s way. Far more. Luke Archer is at the top of his game and doesn’t let the fear of striking out keep him from swinging. This is a motto he applies both on and off the field, but Allie appears immune, seeming to view Luke as nothing more than caution tape on legs. He’s a player, and in Allie’s experience, they’re all the same. She won’t risk her job or her heart to another one, no matter how different this one claims to be. But as Allie gets to know him, she discovers the number eleven the public thinks they know is very different from the real Luke Archer. He seems too good to be true. And maybe he is. Allie will have to confront the stories attached to a player of Luke Archer’s stature and decide who she’ll put her faith in—The man she’s falling for? Or the rumors?

You think you know everything there is to know about someone before you marry them only to find out it was all hidden and you were being fed lies. Never once did I think I was going to die. Joie Miami

release date: Mar 31, 2015
Joie Miami
When JoAnn Wainwright aka Joie Talarico called the Miami, Florida office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in November 1989, she was a woman scorned and abandoned by the people she trusted most. Betrayal outweighed the code of loyalty. There was no longer honor among soldiers. She had been "fucked by the Mob without even a kiss!" Having a home that was more like a battlefield due to her abusive father; Gene "Gino" Talarico appeared at a time in JoAnn's life when she needed it most. Like Prince Charming, he took her away from the destitution she knew and replaced it with tainted riches. It was her personal Cinderella story with a twist! Unfortunately, the happy ending she expected didn't come written like the fairy tale. For fourteen years, JoAnn, known as Joie, had been the woman that stood strongly by the side of Gene Talarico, a Mafia soldier. She thrived off of a life style many would have quivered from. She was groomed to be an asset to Gene and his "employers" which turned out to be the South Florida Branch of the Chicago Mafia. For years she hosted gatherings, carried and laundered money, loaded planes to make drops, bought the apartments and cars for the "family" and kept their secrets. Her role in the Mafia grew to a liaison for Santo Trafficante. She saw heights many of the other Mob wives never knew. The blood and sweat of loyalty, however, was washed away as Gene fell ill to cancer. Everything she worked so hard to build; the power, money and earthly possessions were stripped from her. She had been left out in the cold as a fallen and forgotten foot soldier and was made to survive on scraps. Joie had to count on the one thing the Mafia underestimated, her survival skills. With love now turned to hate, respect now turned to disdain and courage pumping in her veins, she returned the favor of spitting in the face of the Mob.

Love Healed Me

release date: Mar 07, 2017
Love Healed Me
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God" (John 1:1- KJV). "In Him was life; and the life was the light of men" (John 1:4 - KJV). My life didn't just began, when my mother gave birth to me. It began before that, because God knew me before I was formed in my mother's womb. I was destined for great things and God knew this, however, I wasn't too sure at first. As my life began to unfold, it looked like I was not going to make it out of the "hood." But, little did I know God had a plan. I really wasn't sure why I had to go through some of the things that I had to, as young child. But, as life continued to go on I started to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know it was very clich but I had to say it, because it is true. Getting abused sexually, mentally, physically and emotionally, as a child, was hard enough to deal with. But, the real shocker was that I didn't think it would happen again, when I was well into my twenties and early thirties. I guess a person thinks, well shouldn't you have learned some lessons by now, like where not to go, who not to trust and especially what not to do? I actually started to think that once life mistakes happened, no more would follow. What was I thinking? Well, after becoming a mom first, then marrying second, then becoming a mom again, I realized that the first few mistakes I made, in the past, was just the beginning. More mistakes were to come, for one, I am now a new mother with no experience, a new wife with no previous experience and I am supposed to do this without falling and bumping my head, wow! Why do we do that to ourselves? We think that everything and everyone is supposed to be a certain way, perfect. Sometimes the world could make you think that mistakes are not allowed and when they are made, you must be punished to the max. After the experiences of life hit me early, I now find myself in a place where my life is just beginning. I found the love of my life in my soul mate God sent and gave to me, my wonderful husband Minister C. L. Williams as well as my new beautiful and gifted stepdaughter. I definitely have to say after all we've been through, I thank God for my wonderful, handsome and smart sons. These two boys have been the reason I kept pushing to be better, do better and to become more than what this world would have led me to believe I can be. There is no way I would have thought that after all I've gone through I would end up with a greater love for God, myself, my husband and my children. Never say never. With God, all things are possible! Let me share my story.

Correlates of Fish Consumption and Blood Lead

release date: Jan 01, 2020
Correlates of Fish Consumption and Blood Lead
The first section is an analysis of an educational intervention with the goal of increasing fish consumption among middle-aged, low-income women to decrease risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Blood samples from program participants were compared to samples from controls from local health fairs. The intervention was successful as evidenced by a clinically significant increase in blood eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which correlates with lower SCD risk. People who were exposed to health fair messaging also experienced an increase in blood EPA and DHA. The second section is an analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Data from the Patient Health Questionnaire Depression Module were analyzed in connection with dietary data on fish and meat consumption and the consumption of their component nutrients, EPA, DHA, and cobalamin (B12). The people who ate the least fish and meat products were most likely to have experienced symptoms indicating major depressive disorder and more likely to report more severe symptoms. Other factors that were associated with depression prevalence and or severity were smoking, poverty, and female sex. The third section is another analysis of NHANES data. The data analyzed were blood lead concentrations in adults and children and correlated dietary, socioeconomic, and lifestyle variables. Blood lead levels in children were positively associated with serum cotinine and African American race and negatively associated with increasing age, later sample collection date, household income, and history of breast feeding. Adult blood lead levels were positively associated with increasing age, African American race, alcohol consumption, serum cotinine, and male sex and negatively associated with income and later sample collection date. Only in African Americans is tap water consumption associated with higher blood lead levels.

Relationship Satisfaction in Black Couples

release date: Jan 01, 2019
Relationship Satisfaction in Black Couples
The study explored how Black couples cope with perceived discrimination. More specifically, the study examined how perceived racial discrimination interacted with the enduring strength of self-compassion, and put a strain on couples' relationship processes that have implications for relationship satisfaction. Further, the role of open communication as a potential moderator of the consequences of maladaptive communication patterns on relationship satisfaction was examined. Participants were 210 Black married couples residing in the United States. A common-fate moderated mediation model was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that first, for both spouses, the higher the self-compassion, the lower was couple negative interactions. Second, for wives, self-compassion's relationship with negative interaction changed when discrimination perceived was high. Third, couple negative interaction was found to suppress the positive effects of self-compassion on relationship satisfaction. Fourth, for wives, openness changed the relationship between negative interaction and relationship satisfaction. Fifth, conditional indirect effects were found only for wives -- the extent self-compassion was related to relationship satisfaction through negative interaction was dependent on both the amount of discrimination perceived by wives and the degree of open communication wives reported in their relationships. The findings have implications for clinical work as well as further research.
