Causal Inference

release date: Feb 14, 2023
Causal Inference
A nontechnical guide to the basic ideas of modern causal inference, with illustrations from health, the economy, and public policy. Which of two antiviral drugs does the most to save people infected with Ebola virus? Does a daily glass of wine prolong or shorten life? Does winning the lottery make you more or less likely to go bankrupt? How do you identify genes that cause disease? Do unions raise wages? Do some antibiotics have lethal side effects? Does the Earned Income Tax Credit help people enter the workforce? Causal Inference provides a brief and nontechnical introduction to randomized experiments, propensity scores, natural experiments, instrumental variables, sensitivity analysis, and quasi-experimental devices. Ideas are illustrated with examples from medicine, epidemiology, economics and business, the social sciences, and public policy.

Deep South

release date: Aug 03, 2022
Deep South
A classic examination of the lived realities of American racism, now with a new foreword from Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson. First published in 1941, Deep South is a landmark work of anthropology, documenting in startling and nuanced detail the everyday realities of American racism. Living undercover in Depression-era Mississippi—not revealing their scholarly project or even their association with one another—groundbreaking Black scholar Allison Davis and his White co-authors, Burleigh and Mary Gardner, delivered an unprecedented examination of how race shaped nearly every aspect of twentieth-century life in the United States. Their analysis notably revealed the importance of caste and class to Black and White worldviews, and they anatomized the many ways those views are constructed, solidified, and reinforced. This reissue of the 1965 abridged edition, with a new foreword from Pulitzer Prize winner Isabel Wilkerson—who acknowledges the book’s profound importance to her own work—proves that Deep South remains as relevant as ever, a crucial work on the concept of caste and how it continues to inform the myriad varieties of American inequality.

Quarantine

release date: Jul 21, 2022
Quarantine
In the middle of the fourteenth century, a plague occurred throughout the world. This pestilence has since become known as the “Black Death.” It is estimated that 60 percent of Europe’s population died during the pestilence. During that period, a few books were written, the most famous of which were The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer and The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. These books describe what was on the minds of healthy people who lived through it. Quarantine is about eight people quarantined together at work because of our current situation, which at times mirrors the one suffered over six centuries ago and their views on what’s really happening in the world around them given the current pandemic or not so much a pandemic. During the conversation, which at times gets heated, each, in turn, tells a story that they know about themselves or that they have heard. Quarantine is a book which describes what’s on people’s minds during our time of upheaval and controversy while mixing in eight entertaining stories that everyone will enjoy reading.

Romantic Comedy

release date: Feb 24, 2022
Romantic Comedy
'The course of true love never did run smooth' – so says Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and for more than 2000 years the problems faced by young men and women fighting to find and keep an appropriate sexual partner have been a theatrical staple. This book explores the shapes that Romantic Comedy has assumed from Greek New Comedy via Shakespeare to the present. Changing social values have helped to redefine the genre's traditional hetero-normativity, while the recent trend towards more fluid casting has opened up many romantic comedies to radical reinterpretations. Organized chronologically to allow readers to trace the development of the form against changing societal norms, the book features a range of case studies of key works from the British tradition, including A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, Susanna Centlivre's A Bold Stroke for a Wife, Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer, Stanley Houghton's Hindle Wakes, Noël Coward's Private Lives, Shelagh Delaney's A Taste of Honey, Ayub Khan-Din's East is East and David Eldridge's Beginning.

Crossing the Great Divide: Walking with God Through Nature

release date: Jan 06, 2022
Crossing the Great Divide: Walking with God Through Nature
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity...” (Jeremiah 29:11–14) Walking in the path of darkness, I never looked up to see God’s light. I had put God on the shelf. I was making my way in life. I was gaining notoriety and recognition for my accomplishments. My pride, arrogance, and selfishness were shining in my fleshly success. I was rolling and life was rocking, until one day, God placed a boulder in my path I could not move. In the blink of an eye, I lost my career, and my marriage was coming to an end. My Heavenly Father had stopped my fleshly ways to show me the deep darkness of my soul. He would take the pieces of clay from my brokenness, place me back on His pottery wheel, remold me with His loving hands, and put me through the fire to purify my soul. He would lead me to His place, “The Back Porch,” where He would teach me to meditate, show me visions, give me peace in His quietness, and open my ears to hear His voice. I would listen as He would speak through the pen and I would record His spoken words. Exhausted, tired, and weary, a broken man was being healed through the writings of his Heavenly Father. In this journey, He will use my love for nature to share with me the simple things in life, explain my visions, and gain understanding as we walk through this journey together. God shines His light and speaks to every man and woman. You must take the time to see His light and be still in His presence to hear His voice. Open this book, take a journey with me, and experience how God heals and remolds a broken man. He led me to write this book so you can see how God changed me and experience how God can change you.

Searching and Researching
In the last 130 years, 30 Swiss people have won a Nobel Prize, and one of them is Richard R. Ernst. He laid the foundation for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revolutionized medical diagnostics across the globe. In his autobiography, which the scientist completed shortly before he passed away at the age of 87, he talks about his life. Prof. Ernst grew up in a family long-established in Winterthur, Switzerland, however his childhood and adolescence were overshadowed by a demanding father. He talks in detail about the start of his career in the 1960s, when he made a number of key discoveries at Varian Associates, Palo Alto, USA, as well as about his return to ETH Zürich, Switzerland, and the shark tank that university research is. The highly talented chemist reveals how his passion for Himalayan art began while travelling in Nepal, which ended in him building up one of the most significant collections of thangkas – the tantric Buddhist scrolls. In this book, Prof. Ernst discusses openly and directly about all aspects of his life, with humility and a wry sense of humor.

Public Policy

release date: Jan 11, 2022
Public Policy
Public Policy: A Concise Introduction is a student-friendly textbook that quickly connects readers to the inner workings of public policy. The text condenses early chapters on theory and the policy-making process, allowing students to take up key policy challenges – such as immigration, education, and healthcare - much earlier in the semester. Not every student starts out engaged in public policy, so place your students – both majors and non-majors alike – in the driver’s seat by fostering their analytical skills early and spend the rest of the semester discussing policy issues, examining data, and debating current policy examples that matter most to them. The Second Edition has been updated to include how we can collectively use public policy to raise individuals from the margins and address inequities that exist in our system. Recent policy questions include: "How do we shape our country′s health care system?", "How do we address increases in costs of tuition?", and "Did the COVID-19 pandemic positively or negatively shape our public education system?"

True North

release date: Oct 28, 2021
True North
The Plaisted Polar Expedition of 1968 was the first indisputable attainment of the North Pole over the Arctic Ocean ice surface from a point of land. The journey took forty-four days of struggle, delays, intense cold, windstorms, and the uncommon determination of dedicated expedition members to achieve the goal. Part 1 of the book covers the daily activities of the ice party as they progressed ever so slowly northward and of the support team at the base camp, working to ensure the necessary logistical tasks to keep the ice party moving. Part 2 shines a light on the navigational practices of Peary in his 1909 quest to reach the North Pole, a claim that even the National Geographic Society, his solid supporter for 111 years, now concluded he did not achieve. His navigation failed him. This became abundantly clear in the analysis.

Nonlinear Contingency Analysis

release date: Oct 27, 2021
Nonlinear Contingency Analysis
Nonlinear Contingency Analysis is a guide to treating clinically complex behavior problems such as delusions and hallucinations. It’s also a framework for treating behavior problems, one that explores solutions based on the creation of new or alternative consequential contingencies rather than the elimination or deceleration of old or problematic thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Chapters present strategies, analytical tools, and interventions that clinicians can use in session to think about clients’ problems using decision theory, experimental analysis of behavior, and clinical research and practice. By treating thoughts and emotions not as causes of behavior but as indicators of the environmental conditions that are responsible for them, patients can use that knowledge to make changes that not only result in changes in behavior, but in the thoughts and feelings themselves.

Daniel Defoe

release date: Oct 21, 2021
Daniel Defoe
In this book, Paula Backscheider considers Daniel Defoe's entire canon as related, developing, and in close dynamic relationship to the literature of its time. In so doing, she revises our conception of the contexts of Defoe's work and reassesses his achievement and contribution as a writer. By restoring a literary context for modern criticism, Backscheider argues the intensity and integrity of Defoe's artistic ambitions, demonstrating that everything he wrote rests solidly upon extensive reading of books published in England, his understanding of the reading tastes of his contemporaries, and his engagement with the issues and events of his time. Defoe, the dedicated professional writer and innovator, emerges with a new wholeness, and certain of his novels assume new significance. Defoe's literary status continues to be debated and misunderstood. Even critical studies of the novel often begin with Richardson rather than Defoe. By moving from Defoe's poetry, pamphlets, and histories to the novels, Backscheider offers an argument for the thematic and stylistic coherency of his oeuvre and for a recognition of the dominant place he held in shaping the English novel. For example, Defoe deserves to be recognized as the true originator of the historical novel, for three of his fictions are deeply engaged with just those conceptual and technical issues common to all later historical fiction. And Roxana now appears as Defoe's deliberate attempt to enter the fastest growing market for fiction—that for women readers. What have been powerfully significant for the history of the novel, then, are the very characteristics of his writing that have been held against his literary stature: its contemporaneity, its mixed and untidy form, its formal realism, its concentration on the life of an individual, and its probing of the individual's psychological interaction with the empirical world, making that world representative even as it is referential. It is exactly these characteristics most original, prominent, and subsequently imitated in Defoe's fiction that define the form we call "novel."

Securing Data on Threat Detection by Using IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM QRadar: An Enhanced Cyber Resiliency Solution

release date: Sep 13, 2021
Securing Data on Threat Detection by Using IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM QRadar: An Enhanced Cyber Resiliency Solution
Having appropriate storage for hosting business-critical data and advanced Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) software for deep inspection, detection, and prioritization of threats has become a necessity for any business. This IBM® Redpaper publication explains how the storage features of IBM Spectrum® Scale, when combined with the log analysis, deep inspection, and detection of threats that are provided by IBM QRadar®, help reduce the impact of incidents on business data. Such integration provides an excellent platform for hosting unstructured business data that is subject to regulatory compliance requirements. This paper describes how IBM Spectrum Scale File Audit Logging can be integrated with IBM QRadar. Using IBM QRadar, an administrator can monitor, inspect, detect, and derive insights for identifying potential threats to the data that is stored on IBM Spectrum Scale. When the threats are identified, you can quickly act on them to mitigate or reduce the impact of incidents. We further demonstrate how the threat detection by IBM QRadar can proactively trigger data snapshots or cyber resiliency workflow in IBM Spectrum Scale to protect the data during threat. This third edition has added the section "Ransomware threat detection", where we describe a ransomware attack scenario within an environment to leverage IBM Spectrum Scale File Audit logs integration with IBM QRadar. This paper is intended for chief technology officers, solution engineers, security architects, and systems administrators. This paper assumes a basic understanding of IBM Spectrum Scale and IBM QRadar and their administration.

DeFi and the Future of Finance

release date: Aug 19, 2021
DeFi and the Future of Finance
During the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, our financial infrastructure failed. Governments bailed out the very institutions that let the economy down. This episode spurred a serious rethink of our financial system. Does it make any sense that it takes two days to settle a stock transaction? Why do retailers, operating on razor thin margins, have to pay 3% for every customer credit card swipe? Why does it take two days to transfer money from a bank account to a brokerage—or any other company? Why are savings rates miniscule or negative? Why is it so difficult for entrepreneurs to get financing at traditional banks? In DeFi and the Future of Finance, Campbell R. Harvey, Ashwin Ramachandran and Joey Santoro, introduce the new world of Decentralized Finance. The book argues that the current financial landscape is ripe for disruption and we are seeing, in real time, the reinvention of finance. The authors provide the reader with a clear assessment of the problems with the current financial system and how DeFi solves many of these problems. The essence of DeFi is that we interact with peers—there is no brick and mortar and all of the associated costs. Savings and lending are reinvented. Trading takes place with algorithms far removed from traditional brokerages. The book conducts a deep dive on some of the most innovative protocols such as Uniswap and Compound. Many of the companies featured in the book you might not have heard of—however, you will in the future. As with any new technology, there are a myriad of risks and the authors carefully catalogue these risks and assess which ones can be successfully mitigated. Ideally suited for people working in any part of the finance industry as well as financial policy makers, DeFi and the Future of Finance gives readers a vision of the future. The world of finance will fundamentally be changed over the coming decade. The book enables you to become part of the disruption – not the target of the disruption.

History, Philosophy and Science Teaching: A Personal Story

release date: Jan 01, 2021
History, Philosophy and Science Teaching: A Personal Story
This book is an historical narrative of academic appointments, significant personal and collaborative research endeavours, and important editorial and institutional engagements. For forty years Michael Matthews has been a prominent international researcher, author, editor and organiser in the field of 'History, Philosophy and Science Teaching'. He has systematically brought his own discipline training in science, psychology, philosophy of education, and the history and philosophy of science, to bear upon theoretical, curricular and pedagogical issues in science education. The book includes accounts of philosophers who greatly influenced his own thinking and who also were personal friends - Wallis Suchting, Abner Shimony, Robert Cohen, Marx Wartofsky, Israel Scheffler, Michael Martin and Mario Bunge. It advocates the importance of clear writing and avoidance of faddism in both philosophy and in education. It concludes with a proposal for informed and enlightened science teacher education. "Michael Matthews has probably done more for the history and philosophy of science education than anyone else. This book is a riveting read. There are fascinating accounts about the journal Science & Education, the debates over constructivism, and fundamental conceptual issues that lie at the heart of science and science education. This is an essential read for anyone interested in science education." -- Michael J. Reiss, Professor of Science Education, University College London "The work of Michael Matthews in emphasizing the role of history and philosophy of science in science education has been truly monumental. Even more monumental is this much anticipated intellectual biography in which he recalls his early influences and subsequent intellectual encounters within diverse areas, including Catholicism, constructivism, the life and work of Joseph Priestley and the physics of the pendulum." -- Eric Scerri, Chemistry Department, University of California Los Angeles "Matthews records his intellectual maturation and career in a rich personal narrative. It is a fascinating trajectory through the major science educational ideas, trends and upheavals of the last four decades. He remains a sombre voice of reason, of Enlightenment virtues, of liberal education and of sound teacher education and science teaching." -- Roland M. Schulz, Centre for Imagination in Research, Culture and Education, Simon Fraser University.

Combinatorial Nullstellensatz

release date: May 31, 2021
Combinatorial Nullstellensatz
Combinatorial Nullstellensatz is a novel theorem in algebra introduced by Noga Alon to tackle combinatorial problems in diverse areas of mathematics. This book focuses on the applications of this theorem to graph colouring. A key step in the applications of Combinatorial Nullstellensatz is to show that the coefficient of a certain monomial in the expansion of a polynomial is nonzero. The major part of the book concentrates on three methods for calculating the coefficients: Alon-Tarsi orientation: The task is to show that a graph has an orientation with given maximum out-degree and for which the number of even Eulerian sub-digraphs is different from the number of odd Eulerian sub-digraphs. In particular, this method is used to show that a graph whose edge set decomposes into a Hamilton cycle and vertex-disjoint triangles is 3-choosable, and that every planar graph has a matching whose deletion results in a 4-choosable graph. Interpolation formula for the coefficient: This method is in particular used to show that toroidal grids of even order are 3-choosable, r-edge colourable r-regular planar graphs are r-edge choosable, and complete graphs of order p+1, where p is a prime, are p-edge choosable. Coefficients as the permanents of matrices: This method is in particular used in the study of the list version of vertex-edge weighting and to show that every graph is (2,3)-choosable. It is suited as a reference book for a graduate course in mathematics.

Islamic History

release date: Jun 23, 2020
Islamic History
This book will be immensely helpful to those who wish to orient themselves to what has become a very large body of literature on medieval Islamic history. Combining a bibliographic study with an inquiry into method, it opens with a survey of the principal reference tools available to historians of Islam and a systematic review of the sources they will confront. Problems of method are then examined in a series of chapters, each exploring a broad topic in the social and political history of the Middle East and North Africa between A.D. 600 and 1500. The topics selected represent a cross-section of Islamic historical studies, and range from the struggles for power within the early Islamic community to the life of the peasantry. Each chapter pursues four questions. What concrete research problems are likely to be most challenging and productive? What resources do we possess for dealing with these problems? What strategies can we devise to exploit our resources most effectively? What is the current state of the scholarly literature for the topic under study?

The president of Southern Seminary reveals how secularism has infiltrated every aspect of society and how Christians, equipped with the gospel of Jesus Christ, can meet it head on with hope, confidence, and steadfast conviction. A Storm Is Coming Western civilization and the Christian church stand at a moment of great danger. Facing them both is a hurricane-force battle of ideas that will determine the future of Western civilization and the soul of the Christian church. The forces arrayed against the West and the church are destructive ideologies, policies, and worldviews deeply established among intellectual elites, the political class, and our schools. More menacingly, these forces have also invaded the Christian church. The perils faced by the West and the church are unprecedented: threats to religious liberty redefinitions of marriage and family attacks on the sacredness and dignity of human life How should Christians respond to this multifaceted challenge? According to Pattern

According to Pattern
WHAT SATAN CANNOT CONQUER – HE CONTAMINATES! Many churches today are blatantly disobedient in carrying out the Great Commission as given to us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Himself. Therefore, they provide and incorrect and ineffective witness for the kingdom mission to the world. The Commission mandates that New Testament churches everywhere, “make disciples.” Most churches “baptize them” but neglect to “teach them to obey all things” that He has commanded. Neglect of this vital component only produces more biblically illiterate and confused Christians. Lacking the knowledge of the truth, vulnerable Christians are succumbing in great numbers to the secular, atheistic agenda, aberrant doctrine, and blatant heresy. The immediate prioritizing and reinstitution of true Christian theological education, pastoral training, and leadership development are crucial to correctly grow Christians into spiritually and biblically mature disciples [according to pattern].
