Scouting for Boys

release date: Jul 03, 2021
Scouting for Boys
First published in 1908, "Scouting for Boys" is the seminal work on scouting by British Army officer and founder of the worldwide scouting movement, Robert Baden-Powell. Originally written as a manual for self-instruction, "Scouting for Boys" details many important scouting skills including scoutcraft, tracking, woodcraft, camping, and first-aid. Baden-Powell's work is a rework of his earlier "Aids to Scouting", published in 1899, and borrows many ideas from Ernest Thompson Seton's "The Birch Bark Roll of the Woodcraft Indians", published in 1906. "Scouting for Boys" includes numerous tales that can be told around the campfire, as well as many of Baden-Powell's personal anecdotes, and opinions on proper moral character of boy scouts. While some of the information in this work may seem outdated and some of the moralizing many seem antiquated to modern readers, "Scouting for Boys" remains an important historical work in the scouting movement. Having sold millions of copies since its first publication, the impact Baden-Powell's "Scouting for Boys" as well as his personal advocacy for the scouting movement cannot be overstated. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Quick Training For War

release date: Feb 19, 2015
Quick Training For War
Soon after the beginning of the 'Great War', Sir Robert Baden-Powell published his 9th military title, Quick Training For War, as his personal contribution to the British war effort. Having previously retired from service in 1910 to promote the Scouting movement, this short manual promoted his ideas for preparing new recruits to be smart and efficient soldiers. In contrast to the long established British army training regime of pomp, stark discipline and 'marching round the square' drill; he urges instead a focus on the "Four C's" : Courage, Common Sense, Cunning, Cheerfulness as a way of more realistically training recruits to better meet the rigors and reality of modern combat. Drawing heavily on his own combat experiences in India and Africa, he outlines a clear and simple course of study to help the new soldier develop his field skills and spirit. His noting of the superior Boer use of earthworks/trench fortifications certainly seem to have been proved topical and forward-thinking considering how trench warfare became the defining characteristic of the World War One battlefield. Each chapter includes many personal anecdotes to illustrate his theories on best training practices. This booklet is well written and interesting for any student of military history, particularly those with an interest in how war-fighting practices and mindset changed radically from the early 1900's and forward. It features 18 illustrations by Baden-Powell as well. It makes a great companion read to his 1899 book on reconnaissance training, Aids to Scouting. (also available at Google Play)

Aids To Scouting

release date: Feb 10, 2015
Aids To Scouting
In 1899 while serving in the 2nd Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell penned his sixth military book, Aids To Scouting. It was a non-typical training manual filled with personal stories of intrigue and even games. Its goal was to encourage the development of light reconnaissance scouting skills within the British Army. The book was well received by various armies of its time, including the French Army. His successful defense of Mafeking (1899-1900) in South Africa made Baden-Powell a well-known national hero in Britain. But what completely surprised Baden-Powell was that his book was eagerly taken up by teachers and youth groups to help organize outdoor activities and sport. He eventually embraced the idea of adapting his work into a new youth-oriented book, Scouting for Boys (1908) which went on to sell approx. 150 million copies to date. It was that follow-on book that firmly launched the international Boy Scouts movement. Aids to Scouting contains sections on the characters of a scout, as well as practical advice on observation, stealth/camouflage, map reading, sketching, tracking, reporting and care of horses. It presents these topics is a simple conversational style that makes it easy to read, and is illustrated with personal anecdotes of military adventures by the author. It gives scholars clear insights into his mindset and beliefs that served him well in the siege of Mafeking and shows a clear lineage to the formation of the tenets of his formation of the Boy Scouts. Anyone interested in the history of Boy Scouting will definitely want to read this interesting and formative book. (NOTE - Appendix C contents is missing in this Kindle version - but we hope to update the ebook with it once a suitable facsimile can be referenced).

Playing the Game

release date: Mar 28, 2013
Playing the Game
Drawing on Baden-Powell's extensive archive, Playing the Game is a rich and evocative selection of his writings, on peace - a major theme throughout his career and the theme of the 2007 centenary celebrations, on his own life, from his wonderfull idiosyncratic anecdotal autobiography and includes a healthy sprinkling of some of BP's more memorable aphorisms, such as ‘I don’t mind confessing I have a weakness for hippos' and 'The man who holds the average boy’s attention for more than seven minutes is a genius', not to mention 'Knowledge without character is mere pie-crust'. Imbued with a strong sense of the splendour and the old-school Empire feel of Baden-Powell’s work, Playing the Game offers a dazzling window into a world that’s gone, but whose legacy remains alive, not least in the 28 million members of the Scouts Association

Memories of India

release date: Sep 05, 2016
Memories of India
Excerpt from Memories of India: Recollections of Soldiering, and Sport Erhaps the only redeeming point about these Memories is that they are largely ex tracted from diaries and letters which were not written with the idea of anyone ever seeing them except my mother. To some extent they tell directly against me, since they show me to have been just the ordinary silly young ass who enjoyed sense less ragging, was fond of dogs and horses, and thought very little as he went through the ordinary every-day experiences of a subaltern in India. There is nothing very romantic or very exciting about them, and there is much that is Silly, but at the same time such things have, I think, seldom been set down in writing just as they occurred to one at the time. They may at any rate serve to remind other old officers besides myself that they themselves once felt and did as subalterns now think and do. As we get into our crabbed old age, we are apt to forget that we were once youngsters, as I had almost forgotten that I once enjoyed having all my face except a small patch on the left side scraped bare in a glorious rough and tumble. Scouts' Book of Heroes

release date: Jul 01, 2009
Scouts' Book of Heroes
Robert Baden Powell's Scout movement was in its springtime when the Great War broke out in 1914. Emerging from the pioneering first camp on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, Scouting for boys soon spread like wildfire throughout the British Empire and by the time of the war, there were thousands of Scouts who flocked to join their country's colours. This anthology presents a selection of heroic deeds performed by Scouts in the conflict in suitably admiring terms. In his foreword, Baden Powell himself stresses the self-sacrifice; self-discipline and social equality of the Scouts as the key factors in their heroism. The deeds recorded here range from the famous self-sacrifice of 'Boy Jack Cornwell at Jutland - as act which won him a posthumous VC - to Piper David Laidlaw's equally brave exploit when he walked along the trench parapet during the battle lf Loos playing the pipes to encourage his comrades. Laidlaw survived the action to win another celebrated VC. This is the perfect book for all former Boy Scouts - and for anyone interested in stirring deeds performed by brave men and boys in war. It also contains lengthy details of numerous awards, from MMs to VCs and the lives of leading Scouts killed in action during the Great War.
