The Practice of Integrity in Business

release date: Sep 17, 2016
The Practice of Integrity in Business
This book explores the role of integrity in business and discusses why all leaders seek to have it. The author argues that it is less about ‘having’ integrity as an attribute, and more about practising it. The Practice of Integrity in Business examines how taking responsibility for ideas, values and practices, as well as accountability and wider creative responsibility for sustaining business, all contribute to the perceived integrity of an organization or business leader. Providing methods through which integrity can be learned, the author demonstrates the importance of practice, learning, dialogue and developing a narrative in forming the basis of trust. The book offers a view of integrity in which ideas, values and practice come together to make business and social sense, and to form the basis of mutual challenge and creativity.

The Spirituality of Responsibility

release date: May 18, 2017
The Spirituality of Responsibility
Turkish Islamic leader Fethullah Gülen offers a distinctive view of responsibility, which is explored here for the first time. Simon Robinson shows how Gülen's writings, influenced by both orthodox Islam and the Sufi tradition, contribute a dynamic, holistic and interactive view of responsibility which locates personal identity, agency and freedom in plural relationships. The Spirituality of Responsibility also explores the practice of responsibility in Gülen's life and in the Hizmet movement which he founded. Gülen has been at the centre of many controversies, including in his Movement's relationship with the Turkish government. Charting Gülen's response, from the Israeli Gaza blockade through to more recent crises, the book critiques aspects of both this practice and underlying ideas, and argues that responsibility, focused in dialogue and peace-building, is continuing to evolve in the leadership and practice of the movement, providing a challenge to conventional views of governance and responsibility. This book is an important contribution both to the theological and philosophical debate about responsibility but also to the practice of responsibility focused in creative action, debates in business and contemporary society about responsible governance and enterprise.

The Year with Rudolf Nureyev

release date: Nov 04, 2014
The Year with Rudolf Nureyev
Here, for the first time, is an intimate and fascinating portrait of Rudolf Nureyev off-stage-a man who was an exacting, unpredictable, parsimonious and often immature individual, yet who, at the same time, aroused great affection in a host of friends. Simon Robinson frankly recalls his eventful year working for Nureyev. He did everything for this hopelessly impractical dancer except be his lover, much to Nureyev's disappointment. It was the Russian's insatiable sexual appetite that eventually destroyed him. Nureyev had six houses on three continents but no staff in any of them and he couldn't cook, drive, write a letter, tie a necktie or even change a light bulb. In 1990 Simon Robinson, until then professional crew on a racing yacht, became his PA. For the next twelve months they traveled from the Caribbean to America to Europe, living in luxury in Nureyev's New York and Paris apartments and in spartan isolation on his tiny Mediterranean island. Nureyev's explosive nature was exhausting to live with and many times during their year together Robinson nearly quit-and Nureyev nearly sacked him. It didn't happen, however, because Nureyev needed his PA's calm reliability to ballast his own rocky life, and because Robinson knew that genius must make its own rules.

Deep Purple: Fire in the Sky

release date: Jun 28, 2018
Deep Purple: Fire in the Sky
These days Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' is such a ubiquitous rock anthem that it almost seems as if it's been out there forever. Yet the story of how this most famous of metal tracks came into being is shot-through with chance incidents, any one of which could have seen the recording stifled at birth, leaving music writers to scrabble about for another "best riff of all time" contender (and five hard-working musicians considerably less well-off.) Fire in the Sky looks in detail at this crucial period in Deep Purple's history and the making of their break-through album 'Machine Head'. The basic fact that a fire destroyed the Montreux Casino during a Frank Zappa concert is well known to most music fans, leaving Deep Purple to find somewhere else to record, but this book brings much new information to light. And although 'Smoke On The Water' was laid down while the Swiss Police hammered at the door of a roller skating rink, the band were then forced to move again, ending up at the Grand Hotel where they built a studio in the corridors using old mattresses and egg cartons for sound-proofing. In the chaos, 'Smoke on the Water' was almost forgotten. The band only roughed it out as something to play to their Montreux host, Jazz festival organiser Claude Nobs, who told them it was far too good to leave in the can. This book looks back at the events which led up to Deep Purple's bizarre and Heath Robinson-esque 'Machine Head' recording sessions in the winter of 1971. And as for that "hit to be"; 'Smoke On The Water' was not even tried out on stage, and might never have been played live at all were it not for a request from the BBC for a radio session. It went on to sell 12 million copies when issued as a single in 1973 and is probably the only record to ever generate a gold disc presented to a city. And yes, there really is a music shop in London which threatens to fine budding guitarists should they dare to try out the riff in-store. And in these times of economic hardship, isn't it inspiring to know that punitive tax rates back home were responsible for Deep Purple being in Montreux in the first place? The book moves on through 1972 and takes in the subsequent debilitating American tours where 'Machine Head' quickly became a massive selling album, even as the relentless gigging pulled Deep Purple apart. Memorabilia and many rare and unseen photographs illustrate the story, including remarkable images of the Casino fire and aftermath, and Ian Gillan with his notepad writing the lyrics to 'Smoke On The Water' in the studio. Members of the band have spoken, as well as associated crew and studio staff. The music and gigs are covered while appendices include tour dates and a discography, as well as a map showing the sites connected with the recordings. Several myths are also laid to rest: Many fans trekking to Montreux visit the wrong Grand Hotel altogether, while down the road the wealthy owners of luxury apartments sit blithely unaware of the musical history made in their living rooms. During research for this book the authors revisited the site of the recordings in Montreux with bass player Roger Glover to gain a unique insight into the album's history. As a result of this visit locals are preparing a heritage plaque to mark the site.

Boom Boom, Boom Boom

release date: Apr 28, 2018
Boom Boom, Boom Boom
Back in the late fifties Manchester became a hive of pop and blues music. Local lad Brian Smith saw it happen. Brian took a real interest in the emerging blues scene after seeing Muddy Waters in 1958 and over the next decade he saw and photographed most of the American blues musicians who played in Manchester. A keen amateur photographer, Brian combined his two passions and became known to door staff as 'the fan with the camera'. To be there witnessing the scene at first hand is enviable enough, but to be there with a camera recording it is something blues fans worldwide can be grateful for today. Brian began frequenting the famous Twisted Wheel Club and after the start of Roger Eagle's legendary R&B all-nighters in 1963 (which later led to the birth of Northern Soul), he helped launch the ground-breaking music magazine R & B Scene, becoming their main photographic contributor. Brian went on to a career in the tax offices and it wasn't until the 1980s that his old images began to be sought out by CD compilers. Since then his pictures have appeared in magazines, books and exhibitions, yet until now nobody has attempted to present a published collection of his work. Taking our book title from the John Lee Hooker classic, Easy On The Eye have had unique access to Brian's extensive archives, working directly with surviving negatives and prints which have been newly scanned and restored for the book. The photographs are annotated and fully captioned using extensive interviews by RPM Records boss Mark Stratford. The selected material shows the blues artists who most interested the young photographer, as well as British bands like The Rolling Stones who often idolised them as well. Brian produced images with a real presence and quality, and managed to capture a unique and relatively short lived scene in fascinating detail. Not only on-stage but back in the dressing rooms, he photographed these giants of the blues relaxing with a beer and a pack of cards, or posing for souvenir pictures with British fans. A remarkable cultural melting pot considering many of those musicians couldn't travel next to a white person in some States back home. Some of the artists in the book include: Johnny Guitar Watson, Big Joe Turner, Chuck Berry, Screaming Jay Hawkins, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Hubert Sumlin, Howlin Wolf, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, The Rolling Stones, Carl Perkins.

Co-Charismatic Leadership

release date: Jan 24, 2014
Co-Charismatic Leadership
Current theories of leadership, spirituality and ethics are inadequate for the global, rapidly changing and complex environment in which leaders work today. Emerging from this book's critical analysis comes a new theory of leadership: co-charismatic leadership. This does not mean leadership focused in 'charisma', or the special qualities or charm of an individual. Charisma originates from the Greek word for gift or grace. Rather it emphasises the relational nature of charisma, as both shared throughout the community and dependent upon mutual relationships within the community. The charismata are in effect virtues, to be practised in the community by all members, hence the 'co' in the title.
The authors argue for a leadership that enables virtues, informed by the ongoing narrative of and dialogue in the community, to be practised in the community and beyond. These virtues enable the practice of responsibility, and taking that responsibility for ideas, values and practice is itself central to leadership. Through the practice of responsibility everybody in the organisation becomes a leader in some way. The task of the authorised leader is to enable all this.
This book will appeal to both practitioner and academic audiences alike as it provides an engaging mix of theory and practical application which tests and applies the concepts explored in a range of practical case studies.

Leadership Responsibility

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Leadership Responsibility
This book is about the ethics of leadership. The author examines central theories of leadership and their ethical content, from charismatic leadership to transformational and servant leadership. He argues that ethical leadership is best understood in the context of virtues practised in plural communities, focusing on an ethics of responsibility. This concept includes responsibility for ideas and for awareness of the social and physical environment, as well as plural accountability and shared responsibility for other people. This argument is developed through chapters that focus on military, religious, business and educational leadership. Each chapter is focused on a major case study, including Abu Ghraib, the Roman Catholic church child sex abuse scandal, the credit crunch and compensation, and the problems of sponsorship for public corporations. The chapters also draw out different ethical issues of leadership in general, including the use and abuse of power, appropriate leadership remuneration, leadership and development, and the necessity of wrongdoing for a greater good. Leadership Responsibility engages with the major theoretical debates in leadership ethics across several disciplines but also remains firmly rooted in practice. Simon Robinson is Professor of Applied and Professional Ethics at Leeds Metropolitan University. He was educated at Oxford and Edinburgh and then worked as a psychiatric social worker before entering the Church of England priesthood in 1978. He was university chaplain at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, and then at the University of Leeds, while developing research and teaching in areas of applied ethics and practical theology. In 2004 he joined Leeds Metropolitan University. He has written extensively on business ethics, corporate social responsibility, the nature and dynamics of responsibility, ethics and culture, and ethics and care.
