George Soros and the Roma: Praxis, Equity and Empowerment

release date: Jan 03, 2026
George Soros and the Roma: Praxis, Equity and Empowerment
For three decades the philanthropist and billionaire investor George Soros has played a prominent role in promoting a vision of ‘Open Society’ in Central Eastern Europe (CEE), promoting the transition from communist statism to liberal democracy through his philanthropic measures, most notably his support for the Open Society Foundations. Within this body of work an important aspect has been Soros support and commitment to the development of Roma civil society. Support from Soros endeavours has enabled the development and progression of Roma civil society, especially at the transnational level, preparing and training Roma community leaders in the skills of community development and project management. Thousands of Roma individuals have also benefited from generous scholarship programmes funded by Open Society and Soros, completing school and university studies and other forms of training, thereby engendering role models. Soros-supported initiatives have also been highly influential in transnational diplomacy within for example the Council of Europe and the European Union, playing an important role in policy frameworks like the Decade for Roma Inclusion and the EU Framework for National Roma Integration Strategies.

The People, No

release date: Jul 14, 2020
The People, No
A "brilliantly written, eye-opening" look at how elites distort the meaning of populism by the bestselling author of What's the Matter with Kansas? ( The Washington Post). Rarely does a work of history contain startling implications for the present, but in The People, No, New York Times-bestselling author Thomas Frank pulls off that explosive effect by showing us that everything we think we know about populism is wrong. Today "populism" is seen as a frightening thing, a term pundits use to describe the racist philosophy of Donald Trump and European extremists. But this is a mistake. The real story of populism is an account of enlightenment and liberation; it is the story of American democracy itself, of its ever-widening promise of a decent life for all. Taking us from the tumultuous 1890s, when the radical left-wing Populist Party—the biggest mass movement in American history—fought Gilded Age plutocrats to the reformers' great triumphs under Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, Frank reminds us how much we owe to the populist ethos. Frank also shows that elitist groups have reliably detested populism, lashing out at working-class concerns. The anti-populist vituperations by the Washington centrists of today are only the latest expression. Frank pummels the elites, revisits the movement's provocative politics, and declares true populism to be the language of promise and optimism. This is a ringing affirmation of a movement that, Frank shows us, is not the problem of our times, but the solution for what ails us. "Frank describes an indigenous radical tradition that descends from Jefferson and Paine and stretches forward to Franklin Roosevelt and Martin Luther King Jr. . . . Compelling." ― The New York Times Book Review "Tom Frank does what few writers today are capable of doing―he criticizes his own side." ― The Wall Street Journal "Readers come away knowing that at its heart, populism means just one thing: This land was made for you and me." ― The Washington Post

What's the Matter with Kansas?

release date: Apr 01, 2007
What's the Matter with Kansas?
One of "our most insightful social observers"* cracks the great political mystery of our time: how conservatism, once a marker of class privilege, became the creed of millions of ordinary Americans With his acclaimed wit and acuity, Thomas Frank turns his eye on what he calls the "thirty-year backlash"—the populist revolt against a supposedly liberal establishment. The high point of that backlash is the Republican Party''s success in building the most unnatural of alliances: between blue-collar Midwesterners and Wall Street business interests, workers and bosses, populists and right-wingers. In asking "what ''s the matter with Kansas?"—how a place famous for its radicalism became one of the most conservative states in the union—Frank, a native Kansan and onetime Republican, seeks to answer some broader American riddles: Why do so many of us vote against our economic interests? Where''s the outrage at corporate manipulators? And whatever happened to middle-American progressivism? The questions are urgent as well as provocative. Frank answers them by examining pop conservatism—the bestsellers, the radio talk shows, the vicious political combat—and showing how our long culture wars have left us with an electorate far more concerned with their leaders'' "values" and down-home qualities than with their stands on hard questions of policy. A brilliant analysis—and funny to boot—What''s the Matter with Kansas? presents a critical assessment of who we are, while telling a remarkable story of how a group of frat boys, lawyers, and CEOs came to convince a nation that they spoke on behalf of the People. *Los Angeles Times

Incipitarium Ovidianum

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Incipitarium Ovidianum
Scholars have recently recognized the importance of the medieval and renaissance school tradition on classical authors for our understanding of literary theory and reading practices from the late antique period to 1600. Yet much of the primary evidence, necessary to such an investigation lies hidden in the manuscript repositories of Europe and North America. The Incipitarium Ovidianum will serve as a finding guide for scholars interested in the medieval and renaissance tradition of accessus, biographies, commentaries and Summae memoriales on the poetic corpus of Ovid. The Incipitarium lists alphabetically by their opening words all of the extant texts related to the study of Ovid from 400 to 1600. All known manuscript witnesses to the text as well as the early incunabula, modern printed editions and studies are provided. An appendix lists manuscripts which transmit glosses to the individual works. And a comprehensive bibliography of modern studies related to the study of Ovid in the Middle Ages is included in the introduction to the Incipitarium itself. The Incipitarium surveys 483 texts in manuscript and/or printed form and will be an essential research tool for all scholars working in the field of the classical tradition.

Legislation of Edward I.

Legislation of Edward I.
"THIS BOOK places before general historians the results of a legal approach to some of the most famous statutes of Edward I - notably Mortmain, Ce Donis, the statutes of Merchants, Quia Emptores and Quo Warranto - with illustrations of their practical working from cases reported in the Year Books. These statues must necessarily be discussed with reference to the broad issues of legal, political, and social policy during the reign, and so particular attention has been given to the place of legislation in a system in a system of customary law, and to various aspects of feudalism such as liberties and franchises, the lord''s formidable powers of distraining his tenants, the practical effect of some of the feudal incidents, the economic structure of the family views of land law with the requirements of commerce'' - Publisher.

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER II CONTINUED TROUBLE BY some strange freak of good fortune to which I was totally unaccustomed, the very next day after my summary dismissal from the trunk-maker''s, I got a job in a big dairy company''s business. I have forgotten exactly how it happened, but I think that one of my street chums told me he had seen the notice in the shop window, and hurrying off at once, I secured the situation. At first blush I was almost overwhelmed with the magnitude of my good fortune. For my wages were to be six shillings per week, and a pint of milk twice a day, which to me was wealth indeed, and I began to have visions of getting a little pocket-money out of my earnings, and perhaps even, blissful thought, a new suit of clothes, a possession that I had never yet enjoyed. My delight was somewhat tempered by the fact that my hours of business were to be from 4.30 A.m. to 9 P.m., on Sunday and week-day alike, in summer; and from 5.30 A.m. to 9 P.m. in winter. But of course that was merely a detail. As I had to begin at so unholy an hour in the morning, of course it was unthinkable that I could get any food in the house, and so my landlady made arrangements, in consideration of receiving the whole of my earnings textit{and the milk, to subsidise a local coffee-stall keeper to the extent of one cup of coffee and one slice of cake, price together one penny, every morning. This I bolted at the street corner, often scalding my mouth, for I need hardly say that the margin of time was never very great. And if a boy arrived late, well, there was an end, for his van had gone without him, since it might not linger, obstructing the others. Afte. swallowing my coffee, I fled as fast as my legs would carry me towards my place of business (sounds important, doesn''t it ?), which, when I reach...
