How to Win the Premier League

release date: Jul 24, 2025
How to Win the Premier League
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER AND A FINANCIAL TIMES, SUNDAY TIMES AND TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024 ''The best book on football I have ever read'' Daniel Finkelstein ''Fascinating and educational. An enjoyable and informative read'' Sir Kenny Dalglish ''Deserves a place among the great modern books on football'' Sam Wallace, chief football writer, Telegraph ______________________________ The insider account of the data revolution that has swept through the modern football world written by one of its key architects, Ian Graham. Between 2012 and 2023, Ian Graham worked as Liverpool FC''s Director of Research. His tenure coincided with the club''s greatest period of success since the 1980s, including winning the Premier League in 2020 - Liverpool''s first league title after an agonising three decades. Here for the first time, Graham reveals the fascinating data that informed some of the club''s most pivotal moments of the past decade, from the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as manager in 2015 to the signing of Mohamed Salah in 2017. Along the way, he shares groundbreaking insight into the modern game, including how a season largely played behind closed doors transformed our understanding of home team advantage, or why the GOAT (greatest of all time) might not be who you think. And, in a game that is increasingly dominated by an elite few, Graham charts a path for the future where a data-savvy competitor will always find the edge. ______________________________ ''A fascinating, witty and remarkably insightful account of Liverpool''s reinvention and a clear-eyed, detailed explanation of the inner workings of modern football. Nobody is better qualified to tell either of those stories than Ian Graham, who stands as one of the most (quietly) significant figures in the recent history of the club and the sport'' Rory Smith, author of Expected Goals and Chief Soccer Correspondent, New York Times ''Never before has the data revolution in football been described so well from the inside.'' Christoph Biermann, author of Football Hackers ''How to Win the Premier League gives you three books for the price of one: a book about all of the silly inefficiencies plaguing European football, a book about what it''s like to be empowered to use outside-the-box thinking to help turn your boyhood club into the best team in the world, and a book about how football actually works. If he really wanted to, Ian could easily put me out of a job.'' Ryan O''Hanlon, author of Net Gains and staff writer ESPN *A Sunday Times bestseller August 2024

Designing RF Combining Systems for Shared Radio Sites

release date: Dec 31, 2023
Designing RF Combining Systems for Shared Radio Sites
This book explores Radio Access Networks (RANs) within LMR systems, comprising base stations, mobile radios, and hand portable radios. These components facilitate communication among end users via a network of fixed base stations, antennas, and combining systems strategically placed across radio repeater sites throughout the coverage area. This resource also delves into the consequences of interference, highlighting the painstaking efforts required to diagnose and rectify interference issues through field testing and redesign. The central focus being on the design intricacies of base station antennas and combining systems at densely populated shared radio repeater sites. The book underscores how to identify potential sources of interference from co-located transmitters and receivers, effectively surveying sites to anticipate high-level interfering signals. This critical information forms the foundation for crafting base station antenna and combining systems that curtail interference, subsequently optimizing coverage and minimizing costs. Throughout its pages, the book lays out a detailed roadmap for designing LMR systems resilient to interference. By outlining essential principles and methodologies, the book guides practitioners in creating LMR networks that flawlessly align with end users'' communication requirements. The resulting systems not only meet expectations but surpass them, offering the coverage area and communication quality demanded by public safety and utility organizations during critical operations. Ultimately, the book serves as an indispensable resource for engineers, designers, and professionals engaged in crafting LMR systems capable of delivering impeccable performance and reliability.

Scarlet Women

release date: Jan 26, 2016
Scarlet Women
In 1965, an impoverished elderly woman was found dead in Nice, France. Her death marked the end of an era; she was the last of the great courtesans. Known as La Belle Otero, she was a volcanic Spanish beauty whose patrons included Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and Grand Duke Nicholas of Russia. She accumulated an enormous fortune, but gambled it all away. Scarlet Women tells her story and many more, including: Marie Duplessis, who inspired characters by both Dumas and Verdi; Clara Ward, a rare American courtesan who hunted for a European aristocrat, but having married a Belgian prince, ran away with a gypsy violinist; Ninon de L''Enclos, who was offered 50,000 crowns by Cardinal Richelieu for one night. Money left in her will paid for Voltaire''s education. Courtesans were an elite group of talented, professional mistresses. The most successful became wealthy and famous in their own right. While they led charmed lives, they occupied a curious position: they enjoyed freedom and political power unknown to most women, but they were ostracised by polite society. From the hetaerae of ancient Greece to the cortigiani onesti of 16th century Venice, the oiran of Edo-period Japan to the demimondaines of 19th century France, this captivating book--perfect for readers of A Treasury of Royal Scandals--uncovers the rich, colorful lives of these women who dared to pursue fortunes outside their societies'' norms.

The Road to Ruins
For anyone who ever wanted to be an archaeologist, Ian Graham could be a hero. This lively memoir chronicles Graham''s career as the last explorer and a fierce advocate for the protection and preservation of Maya sites and monuments across Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. It is also full of adventure and high society, for the self-deprecating Graham traveled to remote lands such as Afghanistan in wonderful company. He tells entertaining stories about his encounters with a host of notables beginning with Rudyard Kipling, a family friend from Graham''s childhood. Born in 1923 into an aristocratic family descended from Oliver Cromwell, Ian Graham was educated at Winchester, Cambridge, and Trinity College, Dublin. His career in Mesoamerican archaeology can be said to have begun in 1959 when he turned south in his Rolls Royce and began traveling through the Maya lowlands photographing ruins. He has worked as an artist, cartographer, and photographer, and has mapped and documented inscriptions at hundreds of Maya sites, persevering under rugged field conditions. Graham is best known as the founding director of the Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions Program at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. He was awarded a MacArthur Foundation genius grant in 1981, and he remained the Maya Corpus program director until his retirement in 2004. Graham''s careful recordings of Maya inscriptions are often credited with making the deciphering of Maya hieroglyphics possible. But it is the romance of his work and the graceful conversational style of his writing that make this autobiography must reading not just for Mayanists but for anyone with a taste for the adventure of archaeology.
