The Mysteries of Free Masons and Freemasonry

release date: Nov 13, 2022
The Mysteries of Free Masons and Freemasonry
In "The Mysteries of Free Masons and Freemasonry," William Morgan delves into the enigmatic world of Freemasonry, offering readers a compelling exploration of its rituals, symbols, and underlying philosophies. Written in the early 19th century, Morgan's work employs a critical and evocative literary style that intertwines narrative history with sociopolitical commentary, positioning Freemasonry within the backdrop of its time—a period rife with intrigue concerning secret societies and their influence on emerging modernity. His thorough examinations reflect not only the complexities of Masonic doctrines but also the cultural perceptions that surrounded them, illuminating the fears and fascinations of early American society regarding collective ideologies. William Morgan, a notable figure in the early abolition and anti-Masonic movements, found his footing in addressing the historic legacies and social implications of secretive organizations. His own tumultuous experiences, including the controversial burning of his book and subsequent disappearance, lend a tragic poignancy to his writings, making his insights not just theoretical but deeply personal and urgent. Through examining the motives and ideals of Freemasonry, Morgan also critiques the fragility of social contracts and democratic ideals in America. This book is recommended for anyone interested in understanding the intricate layers of Freemasonry and its impact on social structures. The Mysteries of Free Masonry
The Mysteries of Free Masonry is a book about this infamous secret society, written by the New York businessman William Morgan, who was a mason himself, but turned against them. Morgan claimed to have been made a Master Mason while he was living in Canada, and he appears to have briefly attended a lodge in Rochester. After he was denied participation by members in Batavia, New York, he decided to publically expose secrets of Freemasonry. A Guide to Peril Strait and Wrangell Narrows, Alaska

release date: Apr 15, 2020
A Guide to Peril Strait and Wrangell Narrows, Alaska
Learning how to pilot a ship through Wrangell Narrows and Peril Strait is not an easy matter for a vessel operator new to the area, or even for those with experience. It takes time, patience, and a certain appetite for risk. The older generation of captains knew the channels in great detail, but they did not write anything down to leave for the next generation coming up through the ranks. Recognizing the wealth of the knowledge these navigators possessed in their memories, William Hopkins decided to document their charts and methods as he himself learned to maneuver ships through these important and narrow southeastern Alaska channels. A now retired captain who logged many voyages, Hopkins delineates the navigable courses for passing these treacherous waterways in this essential guide.

Illustrations of Freemasonry
This controversial, and fully illustrated book forms a cornerstone of the mythology surrounding anti-Freemasonry. Captain William Morgan, was a disenchanted Freemason, based in Batavia, New York. After he was ejected by the local lodge, he announced he would publish a book exposing the secretive Masonic rituals. Shortly before the book was published in 1826, Morgan disappeared, and three Free Masons were later convicted of kidnapping. Although there were claims that Morgan had been murdered, others say that he was forced to leave the country. The incident led to widespread hostility towards Freemasons in the United States.

Yankee Modern

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Yankee Modern
"Estes/Twombly's multiple award-winning Cyronak House on Block Island combines a modern, open plan - so suitable for the way most families live today - with time-tested local materials; sliding barn doors enclose a small courtyard entry and protect it from north winds, while to the south a small deck catches summer afternoon breezes. The pair of simple two-story blocks that comprise the Danevic House are turned at right angles and pulled apart to make outdoor spaces and take advantage of different views. A latticework tower joins them, acting as a transition between indoors and outdoors, the private and public realms. Sumptuous photography, charming drawings, and detailed plans fully illustrate Estes/Twombly's commonsense design solutions. Author William Morgan s opening essay traces the firm's development and situates their work in both regional and historical contexts.

Why Sports Morally Matter

release date: Aug 21, 2006
Why Sports Morally Matter
When we accept that advertisers and sponsors dictate athletic schedules, that success in sport is measured by revenue, that athletes’ loyalties lie with their commercial agents instead of teams and that game rules exist to be tested and broken in the pursuit of a win, what does our regard for sport say about the moral and political well-being of our society? Why Sports Morally Matter is a deeply critical examination of pressing ethical issues in sports – and in society as a whole. Exploring the broad historical context of modern America, William J. Morgan argues that the current state of sports is a powerful indictment of our wealth-driven society and hyper-individualistic way of life. Taking on critics from all sides of the political debate, Morgan makes the case that, despite the negating effect of free market values, sport still possesses important features that encourage social, moral and political values crucial to the flourishing of a democratic polity. It is this potential to transform society and the individual that makes sport a key battleground in the struggle for the moral soul of twenty-first century America.

The U.S. Consul at Work

release date: Feb 28, 1991
The U.S. Consul at Work
Designed to present insiders' views on how consular activities work, this collection of oral history interviews with consular officers is an invaluable resource for diplomatic historians and political scientists. The interviews reveal the tasks these officials perform and how they view the substance of the consular function as part of the American role in international affairs both in the Department of State and at embassies abroad. Among the multitude of topics covered are leadership, training, junior officers, Communist regimes, the political milieu in which the consulates operate, American communities abroad, the protection and welfare of American citizens, narcotics problems abroad, visa matters, and passport concerns. These first hand accounts are provided by both retired and presently working consular officials and reflect a broad range and variety of experience. The interviews have been edited and arranged topically into areas of consular specialization or related interests. Explanatory introductions written by the editors provide needed background information. Although much has been written about the history of consular affairs, there has been little else to date about consular operations and achievements. This book fills that gap.

The Almighty Wall

The Almighty Wall
The Gothic revival in America owes much to the works of Henry Vaughan, the Anglo-American architect whose highly original contribution consisted of dozens of churches, chapels, and school buildings in New England towns and on campuses. Vaughan also designed three chapels for St. John the Divine in New York and was appointed architect for the National Cathedral in Washington. This book presents Vaughan's life during his thirty-six years in America (1881-1917), and goes on to examine his small half-timber parish churches, the larger masonry churches, and the brick school buildings which so clearly expressed the temperament and aspirations of his high-church clients. Morgan's study reveals Vaughan as a solitary man for whom architecture and religion were inseparable. His sources were always English, whether drawn from the Gothicists Bodley and Garner (the firm where he trained), or from the Georgians, but were borrowed with an unerring sense of taste and restraint. Vaughan's approach to design encompassed all of a building's details which he personally oversaw or carried out. A founding member of the Boston Society of Architects, he worked in a small office where he spent most of his time drawing. Even when engaged in such a major project as his main work the Washington Cathedral, the office included only Vaughan, three draftsmen, and an office boy. Vaughan himself roughed out all of the Cathedral drawings. The book focuses in particular on Vaughan's masterpieces, the chapels at St. Paul's School and at Groton, as pure examples of English Gothic architecture, the formal and academic expression of the "almighty wall" of Anglican culture. In six chapters it covers Vaughan's life, his parish churches, city churches and cathedrals, collegiate chapels and school buildings, his Georgian work, and buildings he designed under the patronage of Edward Searles. William Morgan is a professor at the University of Louisville's Allen R. Hite Art Institute. His book is included in The Architectural History Foundation's American Monograph Series.
